Homeless Woman Shares Heartbreaking Story of Life on the Streets of Venice Beach

Yesterday, I was walking around handing out socks to homeless people in Venice Beach when I happened upon a small cluster of tents. I talked to a few of the people living there and told them that I would be back today with wipes. Often called "bath in a bag" or "shower in a bag," baby wipes are desperately needed on the streets.
Tonight while keeping my promise and handing out wipes I ran into an older woman who was trying to make a home for the night. Every morning at 6am, police come and make everyone tear down their tents. For the growing number of homeless seniors out on the streets, the daily existence living without a home is overwhelming.
I asked Michelle if she would like some wipes. She responded, "I'll take as many as you can give." I then asked her how she ended up homeless in Venice Beach. We sat down on the sidewalk together, and she started to share. Michelle's story is heartbreaking.
"I never asked to be homeless here in Venice. It just happened to me", Michelle starts her story. A friend talked her into moving to California after a bad divorce. Michelle had her own business grooming pets and boarding dogs. She lived on a farm with her ex-husband. Michelle continues "I got to where I thought I was better than anybody myself. Now, look at me."
At one point, Michelle turned to me and said she cannot continue. I kept recording by instinct. I asked Michelle about her most recent stroke six days ago, and she kept on talking. After, Michelle was okay that I didn't stop.
Michelle's purse was stollen with her identification. A friend helped buy a bus ticket. The first driver allowed her to get on the bus without ID. The second driver wasn't so flexible. They threw Michelle out on the streets of Downtown Los Angeles at 3:30 in the morning. This was her first time on L.A. and her first time homeless. Michelle met a few homeless people that took her to a safe place.
Michelle is determined to get herself off the streets and out of homelessness. Although she has health issues, she is a strong woman. She is doing everything in her power to better her life, but the truth is there are not enough resources for all the people who need our help. We need to change that. Everyone in Los Angeles County must work to end homelessness before more people die outside on the streets!

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they're on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can't ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation's most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America's homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Thank you for this, I’m not singing with another person until people do what they say Justin Bieber Intentions. Oh yes, how quaint it is to imbue society with a sense of personal responsibility when we live in a con artist culture which is largely celebrated. Enough of this bullshit. The homeless in America are largely the sane ones who became broken and disillusioned from a fanatical and farcical system. When the insane run the asylum, don't be shocked when it's hard to determine who is actually sane. Hint: it's not the guy with a collection of Ferarri's.

surely you mean NAZIS ...!!!! I have lived in NYC worked in ERs there - the cops for the most part are immoral and coldly oblivious people with no souls/ I have purposely witnessed them, prodding people with their night sticks - kicking folks to wake them us as they screamed at them. Of course not all are like that but the ones who are not are just as culpable as they turn their heads to the abuse . The worse was when I and another physician were walking and three cops were standing around a homeless man how had just been stabbed. My friend said she was a physician and as well I a PA but they would not let us near him.... it was clear he was bleeding out and eventually just got very very still and quiet ... it was obvious what had happened. Report them - thats a joke -- rip and put right into file 13 as soon as you leave. Like i said you mean NAZIs.

Victoria Evans it doesn’t add up. Her entire story is about everyone friends and random people “screwing her” left and right. It seems she’s just another street walker who takes 0 responsibility for their terrible decisions. Like leaving your wealthy husband that pays the bills, along with your “successful” business with no plan to one of the most expensive states in the nation. It’s stupid, again which is probably why she’s right there. If she tried there are plenty of incentives given by this state. I know homeless loser lazy crack heads sho spend hundreds of dollars on drugs and still have money for hotels and food because they grind for it. She seems like a sympathizer who just wants free rides and blame everyone else.

@@mrmidnight32 I believe what she says. Because of the expression in her eyes. She looks like she is telling the truth. Because she is looking directly at the person doing the interview. When people lie they have a tendency to not make direct eye contact. She doesn't strike me as a crack smoker. Because I personally know of some people who smoke crack. Yes some people will do as you stated and spend money like that and not pay their bills. I feel that's just not the case with this woman. I'm not sure what's up with her. I don't want to judge anyone. Because Jesus said, Matthew chapter 7 verses 1 and 2. King James Version. KJV. 1. Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2. For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to ye again. But I honestly hope and pray. She gets housing. Because nobody wants to be homeless. The streets are extremely dangerous. People are not equipped to live outdoors in all kinds of harsh weather. Please pray for her and all the homeless around the world. That they will get housed. I have taken in several homeless people. Some were successful at getting housing. I also keep clothing for men, women and children. I help everyone I can. Thru the grace of God. I just pray and ask for items I need for the homeless and the items show up. And I give the items to the person. Because Jesus sees my true heart. I thank and praise Jesus for that help. God Bless You and yours. 🌈

@@mrmidnight32 I don't see it. People see things differently. But I can't argue with you. Because I don't know. And can't get her a drug test. I will just pray she gets housing. People being homeless really get to me. I totally agree with the housing first. Then addressing other problems. Once they get a dependable home base. If the person needs some type of alcohol or substance treatment. Then addressing that issue would be the next step. Because they need to be housed first. I truly hope this woman will get housed. I'm in Va. I wish I was nearer to her I would gladly take her in. Over the last several years I have taken in three different women and three men who were using meth. They were all smoking and shooting meth. Two of the women are doing very well. One is married and goes to church regularly. She is nowhere near the person she used to be. And has two young sons that were born after she kicked meth. One is 14 months and the other son is 4 months old. God is good. The man she married lost his son who was 29 to stomach cancer. The hospice nurses were with him. He died at home. He was buried in the fall of 2018. I had known his mother since she was 13. She died of a heart attack in 2017. His father truly loves Jesus. I'm so thankful that Jesus gave him two sons. They live about two miles from me. I am very proud of her. It has been four years since I took her in. We are still friends. I went to her house earlier today. She is my greatest success story. The second woman had went to Wal-Mart with a friend. The friend got stopped for shop lifting. So they searched both girls. My friend had no stolen merchandise on her. But when her pocketbook was searched she had a gram of meth. So she went to jail for a few months. She has since been released and regained custody of her two daughters. Her daughters were living with me for a while. I was their foster mom. Later their father came and lived at my home with them. They were five and twelve years old. I still miss them. I truly loved those little girls. I see them occasionally. They are in an adjacent town that's thirty miles away. The mother goes to the methadone clinic now. The third woman is doing fair. She is still struggling with meth. She is also the youngest. Neither of the three men I took in have been able to shake the habit. Not because they can't. They are just not ready yet. I thought the one was about off of meth. Until right before Christmas of 2017. He was all excited his son and the wife and two grandsons were coming to visit from Baltimore, Maryland. I know this is true. The son was calling him on my phone. This is so horrible. The family was hit by a drunk driver everyone was killed. Only about twenty miles outside of Baltimore. When he told me that I thought I would pass out. Because in 2016 his other daughter was getting on the interstate in West Va. She used to judge beauty contests. That's where she was on her way home from. It was during a really bad rain storm. A motor home ran over her car from behind as she was still on the ramp to get on the interstate they didn't see her car and she was killed. Thank God she was by herself and her child was at a babysitter. His mother died in 2016. I haven't seen him since the summer of 2018. He just disappeared. I think he went to Baltimore, where his son used to live. I don't know for sure. I was good friends with his father. The father passed in 2015 from emphysema. The father had been a short order cook in diners in this area. I had known him since 1983. So I do what I can. I just pray and turn the situation over to Jesus. I don't like to see people in a bind. It breaks my heart.

I've seen video of vans coming from hospitals and parking in front of a homeless shelter and making the people get off. Some of them still in those horrible hospital gowns where your ass is hanging out for everyone to see. When Sainted Ronny Ray-Gun emptied the mental hospitals in the 80s, I lived in Seattle. Big buses would park downtown and kick the passengers off. They would be severely mentally ill men (probably women too, I just didn't see any) mostly in hospital pajamas and slippers. In winter in Seattle! Granted it doesn't snow there much, but it can get pretty cold. And it rains perpetually. A few of them had bottles of medicine, but others who obviously should have had meds didn't have any, and were already talking to themselves. Most of them started drinking right away to quiet the demons--I know more than a little about self-medicating from personal experience--and I'd see them around downtown for years. Supposedly they were supposed to be cared for as outpatients by "new" community mental health centers. Unfortunately, they were so "new" that they weren't even built until these guys had been on the streets for about 10 years.
