Dewalt impact and just a simple extended philips bit. But, since you are asking, I would not recommend you using an impact unless you are pretty experienced or you will run that screw straight through with that drywall. Get a drywall bit or screw gun that limits your screw depth.

Hey Jeff, I recently started renovating my home and I'm hanging drywall for the first time in 15 years. I watched several of your videos in this segment for a refresher and I gotta say that I learned a few things along the way, things that have saved me work and time. I always considered myself to be pretty good at the art of drywall, mudding and taping but it's always good to learn new tricks. I thought that I'd add a few of my little tricks or adjustments to get your opinion and or to help others who have watched your series too. For starters when taping, you've always gone over the tape with a little mud to "get it wet". It's something that I've always done too because you're right about the bubbles that can appear. To help combat that I started taking my strip of tape that had been premeasured to length, rolling it up and dipping it into water for just a second. Then I'd shake off the excess water and apply it to the wall. Since I started doing that I never had a bubble appear and always had great adhesion of tape to mud. My second comment has to do with one of the last segments, the inspection process with the light. To help myself with that I use a campers headlamp and that way I always have a free hand in case I'm on a ladder or need to mark a spot with a pencil to come back to it. Well that's my two cents worth. Keep up the good work.

Ok, that tip about reversing the screw at the end of the strapping ("See that smoke, Max?") just saved me tons of time swapping drills and making pilot holes. Jeff, you are the master!

I have watched so many How to's for drywall. Frustrated in not knowing why certain steps were taken. I learn most by understanding the whole process so I can better find a fix to a problem that may come up. You invited us into this house, into this job site, and into your mind. You explained everything! I felt as if you were talking and teaching me how to do the job as if I was your apprentice there with you. I plan on watching and studying all your videos for all the knowledge you are offering for free to us. Thank you very much for the amazing video Jeff! Great job editing as well Max!

Getting ready to drywall my entire upstairs...my sister and I bought this 80 year old, 1200sq ft house in November 2017 - first thing we did was gut the entire second floor (3 bedrooms - now converted to 2 with cathedral ceilings) because only a few outlets were grounded and everything from floor to ceiling was popcorn stucco...almost 2 years later we are finally at the home stretch. (thank goodness we had other places to sleep!) This was my first reno and I had no clue how much I was getting into.. a lot of lessons learned to say the least! Your DIY vids make me feel sooo much more comfortable tackling this project to its completion. Thank you so very much!

Its the muscle memory you have developed from decades of building cool stuff that many diyers don't have (me). Knife angle for applying paper tape to plasterboard for examle. Hey Jeff!!! I first came across your videos when I was looking into concrete counter tops for fun. I've since watched hours upon hours of your videos. You have definitly mastered your craft... and how to really explain it and teach it to people. You don't just make it look easy... you explain everything you do so well... it IS easy to do, even the 1st couple times. I have my own landscaping company that I have built from scratch over the last 10 years while I worked full time at a terrible company. 6 years ago... i was forced to leave that company and do my business full time... but I was not ready and could not afford too either... but I had no choice. So the 1st few years, had REALLY been a struggle, especially through the winter. Before taking it upon myself to learn about inside renovations, I knew very little, almost nothing. I have since learned SO much from you... I've not only been able to expand my skill set enough to make it affordable to be able to start doing these renos to my own home, but also been able to start doing stuff for other people and create a little business for myself during the winter to help me survive. You only strive for perfection in your work and that's what I try to achieve for myself and my clients and the fact that you're willing to share all your tips and tricks that you've learned over the years, helps me give that perfection to my clients every time and is giving me a great reputation for inside stuff to go along with the reputation I have built for my outside work. So thank you sir... you have helped me so much, I can't thank you enough!!! I hope I can one day, meet you at a trade show or something, so I can shake your hand.

When I watch on a home improvement show on Tv ,they have someone that has never done tapping and finish work. At the end they show a great finish. Impossible because they never added water,or mixed it with 6 oz of water, they apply it way to thick. They would need a belt sander to finish! I know time constraints for Tv is an issue. As one of my instructors told me when explaining something, explain it so a blind man can see it. You are a great teacher your common sense and humor makes for a great and easy lesson. Keep it up!

About the dry wall lift: Look for one that is for sale. Those cost like 300€$ new so you should be able to get one for like 100-150€$ and there are tons of them for sale. Because people buy them for a project and then sell it once they are done because those take up too much room and they are not going to need them again anytime soon. Aaaand once you are done YOU can sell it most likely for the same sum you bought it. So not only is that FREE most likely the buyer comes collect it so you do not even have to spent the time and gas to return it. I bought one from guy that just finished putting drywall on the house he was building. Machine was like new, much better condition than that rented one. Once I am done I just sell it to next user.

In 1982 CGC had a bad batch of mud that has left many homes with cracks and nail pops that are mud related and not structural. try peeling the tape off the inside corners first. If they run like a bad sweater then I would think it is just that. Good Luck

Jamie Goodwin it will be best to remove all walls and ceilings and add new drywall, usually old houses don't even have drywall but a cardboard type material or wood planks, good luck !!!

I've been slowly fixing that issue, each one that popped I basically flake off the pop, set the nail deeply and go each side of it with a screw and then spackle it. Eventually it slows down and then you'll just fix them periodically. If there's a place that is cracking such as a V in where different ceiling angles connect there are techniques for expansion joints.

80s were the worst built homes. I’m sure they used nails not screws. Set the nail and overlap the head of the nail with the head of the screw this will keep it locked down

How do you paint drywall and/or old plaster and not have it fall off in a couple of years.? I have it happening now in my kitchen and laundry room. I had thought of using Kilz as a primer. The kitchen and laundry room will have same colors but most of one plaster wall will have to be removed and replaced with Drywall. The plastering technique used in the house was from the 1940s. I have a piece of the wall out 12" by 12" is the close estimate. You would have to see how this plastering technique was done and maybe it had been a much stronger/complex method than the kind of plastering done today. I will sometime this weekend , study your video. Betcha, my houses plastering technique not covered in your video. Even at Home Depot, anyone under 60 years old working there gets confused with what I had shown them. Hee Hee : - )

I just wanted to thank you for all your wisdom. Your videos are done very well aside from the camera work missing things like showing the knife technique you’re explaining. You’re a very very good teacher, you’re easy to follow and thorough in explanation. You sure make it look a lot easier than it is, but your teachings helped get me comfortable quickly. I had a lot of fun doing this for my first time, and have been thinking a lot about maybe switching trades. Thanks again, you’re now my goto guy for anything house related.

i started my own handyman business last year and i watch tons of videos. this is the first one where this guy speaks the "thought" process of an installer out loud. when i explain the work i do, i explain everything i think about, come across, could come across. this is the how, the why, and also the what if? tutorial. love it! much thanks to Home Reno! love how he doesn't edit the technical difficulties out that he goes through. keeping it real. Somebody shouldve taught my "contractors" this or either taught me they were con artist bulkshitters before i wasted my money. Smh good help is hard to find. Being a woman is worse
@NotSoCrazyNinja3 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't be this way (I personally think everyone should be treated fairly), but if it is possible, always have a man talk to contractors, mechanics, plumbers, and such. The burlier they look, the better. You will likely get better results. Really helps if the friend helping actually knows his stuff so he can call out scammers on the spot or send them away without you wasting money. Not all contractors, plumbers, etc are like this, but far too many are.

OK it's Sunday, the sun is shining in Dublin, Ireland and I'm watching these videos cause I love watching them I do all my own painting and decorating as I love doing it in my home but I'd really like to be good on a drill and teach my son some skills as he would accomplish a lot by being able to be as many jobs about the home and be well fit for the world outhere doing these great life skills like these I think, and he agrees I'd love it if he can drill a hole in the wall and hang up some pictures for me. I'm a female and I get great inspiration to do jobs about the home and its very relaxing watching these videos. What an excellent job sir and ur crew have fun working with u. You seem very easy going.

I’m building out a tiny home and adjoining bathroom built on a trailer. I have no previous knowledge of renovating and I just had to thank you so much for everything you have put out. The way you describe and elaborate on everything has really given me my own skills and is creating the knowledge and confidence I need to finish these tasks on my own. Thank you so so much!!!! Aloha from Hawaii 🤍 Ps- if you did a tiny home series you would kill it! Specifically a skoolie and sprinter

Hey Jeff, I didn’t want to invest in one of those mud mixers so, in batches, I used a kitchen hand mixer LOL. Scooped out several big soup ladles into a stainless steel bowl, added some water, and used the hand mixer on high. Then plopped it into a bucket with a tight lid. Worked like a charm! A bit labour intensive, but not as much as you'd think.

I've got a garage remodel that I've decided to undertake, and ended up here, hoping for just a little guidance, as I'm way over my head doing it alone. This video was incredibly informative and very professional in its presentation. This is hands-down one of the best "How-to" videos I've ever seen, regardless of the topic. I can't think of a single thing that I'll need help with that this video won't provide, and in a single video, that's an amazing feat. Well done, sincerely.
