I met Hong Suk Chon in 2004. He came to America to teach acting to young Korean Americans. I suppose he found refuge here in New York City for the time he was going through the whole ordeal with him coming out and not being accepted by media. He was a very funny and colorful character even in person. I'm happy how his career is restarting again.

Thanks so much for doing this topic! I'm a gay expat living in Korea, and although I can't be out at work, I haven't had any problems coming out to my Korean friends. In fact, last summer, I came out to a group of adult students. I was expecting them to be shocked, but instead, their general reaction was: "Oh - okay. Do you have a partner?" ('cause even if you're gay, you're not allowed to be single)! Things are changing rapidly here, especially among young people.

The back story makes me think of what happened here in the US. Even though the US gay rights movement started in the '70s, gay acceptance took off in the 2000s in pretty much the same way...right down to the fact that younger people tend to me more accepting. Korea Boy is it okay for you? I’m lesbian and older. I did the whole political thing in the states to get civil rights and same sex marriage passed. I remember how rough it was. I think about LGBTQ Koreans often and hope you have strong support. A lot of our young LGBTQ people in the US still think killing themselves is better than being queer. With the suicide rate so high in Korea I worry that a lot of Korean LGBTQ people are turning to this as their only recourse as well. When Korean entertainers complete a suicide it always crosses my mind. I hope you have strong support Korean Boy and that you find a good man to love. It’s hard a lot of the time but it’s worth it!

However, my grandparents think otherwise but like you said, younger people are becoming more open! Which is great! Though there is improvement to be made... I hope Korea accepts gay marriage and everything about homosexuality in the future! Even America..Which needs more improvement as well.

I'm black ( Somali ) and had a great experience with my study abroad. And I'm planning to go back for a 3 week holiday this Summer. Don't worry so much. Koreans are friendly because of their culture. And bad apples are everywhere. I've experienced no racism. Some stares at times from elderly, but mostly out of curiosity. And if you try to speak Korean, one gets more respect. I'd say explore your heritage. It may be very benificial for you.

I don't know if we can say gayness is becoming more acceptable. This is a country where even wearing short sleeve shirts in late October (when it is 20 degrees celcius out!) is considered "crazy" or "strange", as my freshman students often tell me. Conforming to established ways is still prized far more than anything else. It might be more useful to say that gayness is the ultimate affront to these traditional Korean values, and the culture's emphasis on conformity in general.

I feel kinda bad for him now, whenever he goes on shows they "joke" about it and ask him if he likes guys now...Korea is progressing, but like the US, they still have a ways to go in terms of accepting it...

I agree with LoverholicShawol. I always do find it kind of awkward at first when I meet gay people, but thats just because its different from what I am used to. And just because someone may be gay does not mean they are not people. We have bigger things in the world to worry about than weather or not someone "is" or "might" be gay. Who are we to tell someone who they can and can not love. P.S., I am a Conservative American

I believe that when I die, I will simply cease to exist. The conscious being that I am will stop perceiving reality around me, and my loved ones will mourn my death while my body rots in the ground.
