This ended up being the heat shield around the primary catalytic converter. The heat shield rusted off around the bolts allowing it to rattle. You can either replace the heat shield or just put a big hose clamp around it.

I'm thinking they may have not tighten the heat shield back up if they had to remove it. Gonna check it out and see. Thanks!

One day my 2010 Acura TL had the same sound at 2000-2200 RPM while rolling under load only. I watched this video and it turned out to be the catalytic converter heat shield that was rusted around the bolts. It did not make the sound while I grabbed it under the car but it was definitely the culprit since the car is 100% noise free now. I did not care to install a new one since it's only useful if you park under tall gras. Also, not all cars have a heat shield under the catalytic converter.

My freshly bought (used) Toyota Auris does this and my heart sank when it started doing this raspy metallic kind of resonating sound. It’s not yet diagnosed by a professional but it’s sounds awfully similar to 1:48. Even worse with the windows down. I’m really hoping it’s a heat shield and not the engine/transmission. Only comes out when accelerating.

I can hear it because I recognize that rattle lol shit dude. I’ve been seeing it’s from the heat shield. Just get under there and knock on stuff after the car has cooled down. Also to anyone wanting to know how to fix it. Use a hose clamp or search loose rattling heat shields.

Thanks for the video. Have a 2004 accord ex V6 with automatic transmission. Rattling Started at 165k miles. And only rattles when accelerating in drive at 2k-2.5k rpm, not 2k rpm in neutral or park. Was wondering if the problem was fixed by replacing the actual upper and lower heat shields or replacing just loose bolts on the upper and lower heat shield?
@ridiculousrobby3 жыл бұрын
Most of the time the heat shield is so rust that it breaks around the bolts. Just put a hose clamp around the whole thing or you can replace the heat shield and bolts. Just replacing the bolt won’t fix it usually.

Is it normal if I only hear it on my Acura TL when I drive? Because the heat shields noises are linked to engine gas and you don't need to actually drive your car to create exhaust gas...
@ridiculousrobby4 жыл бұрын
Anthony HT the first time I had heat shield rattle was only at idle, that’s was the heat shield on the back side of the engine. Second time I had heat shield rattle was when driving at about 2k rpms, that’s was the front side of the engine. It’s different on every car but because the accord and tl are pretty much the same car. I would advise you to check out the heat shields on the catalytic converter‘s.
@ridiculousrobby4 жыл бұрын
Anthony HT also is your Acura TL SHAWD or front wheel wheel drive?
@onilovni12344 жыл бұрын
@@ridiculousrobby SHAWD with manual gearbox. I supposed the rattling heat shield would be close to the engine if I only hear it when the engine is moving a bit under load. One weird thing I noticed is that if I drive for about 2 minutes at 100kph and I slow down and start re-accelerating like you did, the noise completely stops for a couple accelerations, like if the exhaust had cooled down a bit. And it restarts like before. Could it also be a bad motor mount because it's the same principle I guess?
