Honda Cooling Fan Troubleshooting 2006 Civic. In this video I show how I troubleshoot a modern Honda cooling fan system with A/C Condenser and Radiator fans that operate at high and low speeds through a series/parallel configuration. This vehicle was having trouble with the A/C Condenser fan not working and I do some diagnostics to find the issue. The exact vehicle in this video is a 2006 Honda Civic EX Sedan. Enjoy!

Hi, I know this is off topic but I need your help. I recently changed power steering high pressure hose on my 99 Honda Accord and the power steering fluid bubbles when I turn the car on and I tried to bleed the system. Someone told me that it was air in the system. Can you please tell me how I can fix this problem. Thank you for your help. Keri

@@kericue2065 Turning the steering wheel lock to lock several times (don't hold it at lock) will bleed air out of most Honda systems. Assuming there are no leaks from the work that was just done, many times if fluid is foaming there is an air leak on suction hose/o-ring or pump shaft seal (it will suck in air but not leak fluid generally).

@@BigDog50001 oh thank you for answering me, there are no leaks, what steps should I take to fix this if turning the wheels doesn't work, the o-ring you mentioned is it the one on the new hose? The part that has two bolts and is attached to the pump? I changed the high pressure hose.

Same year car and my radiator fan was constantly running. After a lot of trouble shooting, replacing both engine coolant temp sensors and coming across this video thankfully, I figured out my issue. Come to find out the issue was actually the ac pressure switch! If it’s faulty or your system is overcharged and the sensor is reading too much pressure, it throws the whole system out of wack. The explanation of the wiring in this video was a life saver. Just wanted to share in case anyone ever comes to the comments for info or help

My 09’ civic AC was not cooling. Found out the compressor clutch was not engaging, but fans were working. Narrowed it down to bad AC relay in fuse box. Replaced it with MITSUBA Relay, Honda part number 39794-SDA-A05. ($20). AC blows cold now!! I have found this video very helpful in diagnosis of my civic AC. Also I have read on other forums that the Honda factory installed Omron AC relays go bad so better replace them sooner than later. Many thanks sir!

Big Dog: I have worked in factory maintenance for years and my big complaint was nobody knew how the various systems should function when the machine was working as it should. Without knowing that it complicates testing, so I really appreciate you for taking the time to explain how the fan system should operate under the different conditions. I have not solved the problem yet, but with your help I am confident that we will get there.

Best explanation I have found on the Honda civic cooling and a/c fans. Thanks! I have just replaced a bad a/c fan, so now both fans come on when the a/c kicks in, but the fans do not run when the car is warm. I am waiting for new temperature sensors - hoping that will fix it. A tip to prevent overheating, is to run the heater inside the car, which removes the heat from the engine. This is what I am doing, while waiting for the new sensors to arrive. Its cheaper to buy new sensors than to get the dealer to plug in their computer just to tell you whats broken. Thanks again.

Outstanding breakdown of how this circuit works. It's really not all that complicated once you get your head wrapped around series and parallel circuits. The thing that irks me is that it's computer controlled. Why does everything have to be computer controlled? Just toss in a couple more relays connected to temp and pressure switches and the system would work fine. That's how things like this worked 20+ years ago. Engineers never think about how expensive repairs can be because obviously stuff that they design don't break.

Great to check the electricals first, some people overlook that and just start swapping out parts ahah thank you for the video, pretty sure some of my relays are no good since they both don’t turn on when AC fan is on low or high power. Changed the A/C relay and fuse in the 36 position under the dash inside the car. Never looked at the other fuses you mentioned: Fuse 6,7, 11 and 15.

Great video! I learned a lot about fans and their relays. I have an issue with my wife's Honda Jazz(Fit). Originally the AC compressor clutch didn't engage for about two years. Now I bought a new AC relay and the compressor started to work (only mildly cold air). But, only the main fan works and only if AC is turned on (then the compressor clutch wont cycle at all, it runs continuously. Perhaps a pressure valve problem). The fan will eventually run b/c of engine temp is rising. I have to test your methods on that Jazz. Thank you for the info!

You made a point around 11 min mark that if the compressor is not on then commanding the fans on with a/c button inside car will not work. This leads me to believe that i may need to get my refrigerant recharged for all this to work - both compressor and fans. Other things i’ve tried: I have supplied direct power to fan by jumping at fuse box - they work! I have bought new fuses - fans do not power on when engine is warm nor with turning on a/c at dash The refrigerant has been low before but it never stopped my cooling fans to stop working.

@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 4 жыл бұрын
In general, tapping can move parts inside enough so that either: 1. the brushes inside the motor make contact with commutator again so voltage can flow. 2. any stuck/jammed parts inside part are freed so that the motor/actuator works again. The brushes are typically what wear out on fans. Thanks for the comment!

I used an Xtool D8 to diagnosis the pid's. The weird part was unlike the Autel, the Xtool's values for the A/C Switch, A/C Clutch, Fan High, Fan Low all showed as "closed". I would truly appreciate your thoughts on if it was the Xtool or something in the ECM that caused the values to be unreadable. Thanks in advance.

@BigDog50001

With A/C on, the fans will usually run on low speed when refrigerant pressure on High Side is between approximately 28 - 221psi, over 221psi and the fans should go to high speed and will stay on high until A/C pressure goes back down to about 170psi. FYI, during normal A/C operation the fans usually cycle on and off depending on the load. With A/C off, when coolant temps get to approximately 205-210 degrees the fans usually come on at high speed and will stay on until coolant temps drop. On some models I have also seen them turn on low speed first depending on what the system is seeing. Trying to only get the fans to come on low speed can be difficult on Hondas. Also, certain circuit problems, like one fan is bad and not working or if there is a bad fan control relay, then *neither of the fans will work on low speed*. One or both fans may work on high speed but they won't work on low speed due to them running in series which can cause you to wonder why they aren't coming on. Thanks for the support and the comment!

Great explanation of the schematic and how the circuit operates I see turning on the a/c brings both fans on in high speed mode is there a way to force operation in low speed mode without a scanner thanks

Man thank you for creating this channel and all these videos, I am saving myself thousands of dollars fixing up a 2000 Civic. When I search for any troubleshooting videos related to my Civic, I always try to find something by you regardless of the model or year because it's all relevant and similar enough to my Honda. Do you rebuild transmissions? I've been watching Precision Transmission and I crave rebuilding my own someday soon. Perhaps I'm just optimistic, though

Thank you, I appreciate the comment! People like you are the reason I make these videos. Precision Transmission is great but I have no interest in rebuilding transmissions lol!

Great video Big Dog. I'm trying to use it for my situ but having trouble understanding. My A/C compr. pulley went out on my 2009 Civic LX. So decided to get the 2009 'DX' belt for no A/C vehicles, and just by-pass the whole A/C pulley. And it worked great. Only thing is I think my Radiator fan and A/C fan no longer run on hot engine temp...?? They both DO run on high when just the A/C button on the dash is turned on. ???? Can I jump ECT1 and ECT2 plugs with a paper clip to test continuity or will that fry the ECM...?? Thanks very much..!!

Great video. I have a 2006 civic and it’s temperature went all the way to high but the radiator fans didn’t turn on. I turned on the AC and both the fans started working. I let the heater on high speed and it helped the temperature go down to normal. I then thought of coolant sensors not working and jumped them both with a paper clip. This gave check engine light in the dash but fans still didn’t work. After few hours I opened the radiator cap and it was low on coolant. I had to put almost half gallon in it. Also added some coolant to reservoir since it was empty too. Test drove it again and now the fans are working intermittently and temperature didn’t rise. Question, could the low coolant let the fans stay off? Thanks for your help.

Thank you so much for the detailed video, actually I have a civic 2011 only both fans goes on when I turn on the Ac but never goes on even when the temperature goes high based on the details looks like the temperature sensor is bad ??
@BigDog50001

I would not immediately assume a bad Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. It is possible it is not getting hot enough to turn on fans (either too cool outside or thermostat stuck open etc). It is also possible that there is an electrical issue or bad relay stopping fans from coming on for either the low or high speed. A quick look at both ECT1 and ECT2 sensors (there are two) and the fan control data on a scan tool would show if the operating temperature is correct (or show a potentially bad ECT sensor) and whether the fans were being activated by engine computer. Unfortunately you would need a Honda capable scan tool for that.

Thanks so much !!!! I have a 2007 Honda pilot. My fans do not come on while driving. The only time I can get them to come on is if I turn on the fan cold or hot and put it to defrost or defrost and at the feet and face setting. Both fans come on. Only when I do that. I have replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor number one. Any help as how you would proceed from here would be grateful. I am watching your video for the second time.

Thank you very much for the in-depth explanation. I have a Honda City (2014 - 2017) model, the cooling fans turn off at high speed. Do you know if they use the same schematic ? I havent been able to find the exact wiring diagram for that model.

What's up big dog, your video was great and helped me thru the process and all seems good, got new pressure switch, new compressor but wen I start the car up for first time the ac fan and compressor engage but shut down after 3-4 sec then, dead no nothing. Checked grounds r good, but I have 4.5 volts at the middle wire on pressure switch and I've read it only supposed to be between 1-1.3 when running, not sure but could really use your input thanks!

Dave. Excellent lesson for me and other viewers as well. On Ac pressure sensor , is it on low pressure or high pressure side or it is different. You also state that if pressure high ecm will command high relay and low then low relay. Wondering what is that ac pressure and how that pressure have anything to do with fan. And is that ac pressure have anything to do with low and high side of ac guage
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 5 жыл бұрын
The data PID we were looking at is on the high side, if the A/C pressure gets too high (or too low) the ECM will shut the entire system down. Thanks for the comment!

Thank you for the vid. What and where would you advise I clean before replacing a valve cover gasket. I was told the Honda dealership uses brake fluid to clean where the oil leaked. Is it safe to spray that from below where the valve cover gasket is, down to the bottom of the casing?

Thanks for the GREAT video!! I have an ‘07 Accord (2.4L), motor mounts are good, but the engine idle drops very low as the compressor kicks on. The fan assembly is aftermarket; could the fan motors be pulling too much voltage and causing idle to drop too low? How to check the voltage these fan motors pull? Thanks!

Dave thank you for the detailed explanation on analyzing the schematic. My 2006 Civic is having a similar issue. My radiator fan and auxiliary fan does not run when the A/C is off. When I turn on the A/C, only the auxiliary fan runs. I tested the radiator fan by directly connecting to the battery and it runs fine. Fuses, relays and wiring are intact. Am I missing something? Help...
