Here's look under the hood and underneath the 6th generation Honda CR-V.
The Honda CR-v is Honda's mainstream entry as a cross-over utility vehicle. It has a 1.5L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission. Front suspension offers up a McPherson strut design while the rear suspension uses a multi-link design.
In this video we take a closer look at sub-components of the Honda CR-V including the ignition, air, fuel, cooling, lubrication, drive belt, transmission, drivetrain, brakes and suspension systems.
Overall the Honda CR-V is a solid entry to the segment mechanically, offering higher than average build quality and design decisions. However, the 2.0L naturally aspirated hybrid model might be mechanically simpler if a potential buyer is looking for longer term reliability without the complexity of a CVT and turbo.

The lack of undercoating is a show stopper in Canada. That thing will fall apart just after a few years.

Yeah I wouldn't expect any car not to come with undercoating. Will it really rust so quickly? Modern cars aren't supposed to rust for many many years. They got really good at rust proofing cars compared to years ago from what I observe

Great presentation. I'm sticking with my 1999 Buick Regal with the 3800 motor and 177,000 miles on it. Runs like a dream, Easy to fix. Everyone tells me to get something new, but this Regal has the soft suspension FE2. I can't find a new vehicle that drives this smooth. This car is saving me a small fortune in repairs, car payments, insurance. 😄

I had a 1999 CR-V with a 5-speed manual. I was obsessive about the maintenance and service but I treated it like a rented mule. It never left me stranded and I always got where I wanted to go in the snowy mountains of WV or in super-heated south Florida with very heavy loads. My daughter learned to drive in it and she inherited it when I retired and bought a new 2006 5-speed Honda Element. Both are AWD models and still going strong . These are wonderful vehicles AS LONG AS YOU MAINTAIN THEM PROPERLY. However, I have to say that I don't care what has happened to all the new models of all cars with the government mandated CAFE and emissions standards. They are designed to self-destruct prematurely because of being overstressed.

The main issue with honda's, especially the CR-V, is that it appears they severely reduced the corrosion resistance around 2010. I'm a mechanic in a dealership specializing in inspection and repairs of used vehicle. Honda's are by _very_ far the most rust prone vehicle brand on the market right now. Often less than 10 years old honda's are scrapped because they are completely rotten and the front subframe barely holds by the 2 front member bolt. It feels as if a 8-9 years old honda is about 20+ years old in term of corrosion. On the exterior painted pannels it usually doesn't look that bad, but underneat you can pass a scredriver through the sheet metal in most places. I would not recommend any honda in the Canadian market at this point in time due to corrosion issues, unless someone religiously use undercoating, and even then missed spots get severe corrosion quickly. I wish I could share pictures of 5-10 years old honda I have checked, it's ridiculous how bad it is.

I'm a technician at honda the newer 1.5's produced after 2017 should now have vtec on BOTH intake and exhaust side, whereas before they only had variable valve timing or vtec on the intake side. However they ALL have fuel mixture issues bc of the direct injection for some reason too much fuel is being injected and its mixing with the oil (super soupy mixture which could correlate to the high pressure fuel pump) still good cars but expect some recalls in the future for the fuel systems

Thanks for good tech review. I used to own 2017 1.5L CRV bought new almost identical to this, only kept 2 years. Oil dilution a big problem on this 1.5L, and would not warm up in winter, and the front Radar easily gets blocked even on light snow days, constantly showing erroneous warning messages. When Radar gets blocked, it shuts off many other features. This is more or less warm climate vehicle, not suited for cold climate, would not buy another.

The Mrs. and I are picking up a 2024 CR-V hybrid tomorrow, unless the salesman pisses me off and I walk out. Actually, that happened when I bought my last car. He had to stop me as I was leaving the lot, and whisper sweet things in my ear before I came back inside. Here’s a question for you: With a mechanical oil pump you have a bit of delay before the oil system is pressurized when there is metal on metal wear. With an electronic oil pump do they make it pressurize the system and start the oil flowing before the engine starts? Oh, I see that is an electric transmission oil pump. At least that oil filter is very easy to reach. My 99 crv has it up around behind everything and can only be reached by left arm in one position 😂😂😂 That engine sounds weird! Strange that they got rid of the nice ground clearance.

Auto product developers really ought to bring in service technicians to review designs for feedback. Remember when car batteries were placed the front of the engine bay, so you don't have to lift it over delicate electronic components and wedging yourself under the hood? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Sadly I can’t recommend crvs anymore. My coworker blew two turbos under 100,000 miles. Honda was about to not cover him but he raised enough cane. The oil dilution is so bad and yes it will ruin your engine. The rav4 is a much better vehicle by every measure.

@@speedkar99 possibly but I certainly wouldn’t want to buy one and find out the hard way. I told him to stop using auto start stop to keep oil circulating through the turbos. He drives long distances and does all his oil changes on time so I was really surprised by the failure. If he was doing short trips and not fully warming up I wouldn’t be surprised. We had a sonata in our family with a theta 2 blow up because of oil dilution it’s a serious problem in a lot of these Direct injection engines.

I have a friend who is selling his 2020 CR-V now coming off 3 year lease. He asked if I wanted to buy it. I already have a 2013 CR-V with less than 100,000 miles and running fine. I told him I’m not interested, even though his car has less than 10,000 miles (!) because he injured himself after he leased his car and hasn’t been able to drive it much. I like the 2.4 liter engine and geared automatic transmission in my car better than his car with 1.5 litter turbocharged engine with CVT transmission. His car is very nice, but I don’t think it will hold up as well long-term. If it had the same engine and trans as my car, I would have considered buying it. Could sell mine for almost $9,000 (per offer from local dealership) and apply that to loan on newer car. But not interested as things stand now.

I wouldn't have thought a full underseal is necessary when the vehicle is made from dipped, galvanised steel. Time will tell, but manufacturers will know by now what does and doesn't need to have extra coating, they surely wouldn't offer 12 year bodywork warranties if they didn't?
