Cruise control stopped working suddenly on my 2010 Honda Fit. One of the comments here mentioned that the switch was behind their clutch rather than the brake. Found mine behind the clutch, taped the penny, crossed my fingers and went for a test drive. Unbelievable! Cruise control is back! Thanks so much for your post!

I did this repair using exactly 1 penny and a length of electrical tape and this fixed two issues my daughters 2007 Accord Hybrid was having - no working cruise control, and the Auto-Stop feature did not work. Her brake lights had been working properly, it was just the cruise control and auto-stop. Now, both work perfectly. Thank you so much for posting this video. For all the people who used the penny, all you really needed to do was loosen the Brake Light switch and put it in further then tighten it back into the holder, they have a threaded portion to adjust them over time for this reason. Great idea for those who don't have any car knowledge but an easy adjustment for those who do. Great video!

Your video got me to thinking about something that won't fall off over time and the first thing that popped into mind of a simple thumb tack placed in the middle of the piece of rubber. This works and doesn't depend on tape which eventually may unwrap and penny fall to the floor. Thanks for you video. Helped me find a better fix.
@oskarnietz63503 жыл бұрын
People, just adjust the length of that sensor, unscrew, set the correct length and screw again. It is pretty easy, I guess from time to time, you have to check it because it can cause your cruise control to stop working and also the brake lights, or if adjusting it doesn´t solve anything, you need to change that piece. Very useful video though, it made me realize what the problem was in my 2012 honda civic.

Nice video. An alternative is to reposition the switch instead. This switch itself is threaded and locks into a nut installed above the brake pedal. I found this out by buying a new switch and realized that the original switch can be readjusted or repositioned against the rubber grommet as shown in the video. The switch comes out by a turning it a 1/4 turn counter clockwise. Now the switch can be reinserted to make contact with the grommet as needed. Once in the correct position, just turn it clockwise to lock it in place.

I had the same doubt about this being the fix, because I had recently replaced the disintegrated bumper with a new rubber bumper to fix my "brake lights always on" problem. So when my CC went missing, I checked to see that the new bumper was still in place and that the brake lights were still turning off when the pedal was not pushed. So I thought the CC Cancel function would still be working in conjunction with the brake light on/off circuit. Turns out the CC Cancel activation occurs at a point a little "further in" in the travel of the push button plunger of the brake light switch. So if the rubber bumper has even a small indent, the plunger remains sticking just a little bit out, and the CC Cancel function kicks in, even if the brake light function still works. Solution is to replace the soft rubber bumper with one made from a harder rubber, or nylon, like I did, and now everything works properly. Thanks Jeff, from another satisfied viewer !!!

Thanks for the tip! Went on a long drive yesterday and mine stop working (would not set, 2007 CRV), The plastic stopper was indented by the switch enough to tell the system brake was touched. As we know, just touching the brake pedal deactivates the cruise. I never had an issue with the brake lights staying on which is common when the plastic stop is badly worn or missing. You can buy a replacement on aliexpress for $2 but I just silicone a dime on the face of the stop and all is good. Note the indent from the switch in the stop was not centered, so turning it 180 deg would probably get it working for a while.

There you go! Amazing advice and a simple fix on a 1988 Prelude. I used a nickel, (we don't have pennies in Canada). I now have Cruise Control !!! Meantime, my local "HONDA DEALERSHIP" told me that the whole system needed replacing due to the age. They are IDIOTS!!! It would have cost me over $5000 (parts & labor) for them to replace what they said was needed and even then, the system would not work because all the parts were fine except for a $2.00 rubber stopper. They would have replaced several components that didn't need replacing, and in the end, I would pay a fortune for replacements that my car didn't need. AND BEST OF ALL, (sorry, cap's were required here) my Cruise Control still wouldn't work. A simple worn rubber gasket was causing the problem. I fixed my Cruise Control and it cost me 5 cents and a piece of electrical tape. Thank you so much for the advice!!!

Thanks man you’re brilliant. Firstly I’d just like to say you sound exactly like Steve Carell lol ... Anyway I just bought an auto honda Frv with cruise control. The cruise control main power comes on but it wouldn’t allow me to set a speed. I bought the car anyway hoping to fix it as the car was so cheap. Seller told me that most likely the set switch button on the steering wheel just needed replacing. Had to drive 100 miles home with no cruise control. Anyway got home and intended to go about buying another control switch. After some research I found your video. I was very excited to try it as cruise control is really important for me. I went out at night and found the brake release switch but I saw that it was allowing the brake lights to work so I thought it can’t be a faulty brake release switch. I then attempted to remove the cruise control buttons from the steering wheel which was very fiddly but it wouldn’t come out. So I went back home and thought I’d read the comments to check for any tips. I then came across a comment talking about how the brake lights coming on doesn’t mean anything and the penny would still be required for cruise control. I thought ok great, some hope. The next morning nice and early I went under and taped a penny on to the brake lever. Went for a drive and cruise control worked perfectly! Brilliant. Your penny trick saved me alot of pounds. Now I can proceed to love the car. But one thing I would request, please write in the description that this trick would work even tho the brake lights work. Just to avoid confusion. Otherwise thanks for the help. I would happily donate £10 to you for this help if you have some kind of donation page. Honestly people like you deserve it for allowing us to avoid rip off mechanics

Completely different issue than my 07 Civic where the button's internal latch wont stay engaged. Came here thinking you just wedged a penny between the housing to keep the button on. Left here with my own idea to just super glue the button down and not worry about tearing off my steering wheel or hotwiring the cruise on. Thanks for not helping but lighting the fire of inginuity in me.

@Jacob Sorensen, glad I could help, lol. That happens a lot for me. Watch someone else’s video and come up with my own twist on it. I would suggest clear gorilla glue vs. super glue. Super glue will break down quicker over time.

Fixed my MDX 2001. Used 14mm wrench to adjust the position instead of adding a spacer. But without this video would not know what to do. Thx

Is there an OEM part number for replacing the brake pad rubber stop (instead of using a penny)? Thanks!

Here is a popular aftermarket pad : shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/dorman-help-brake-and-clutch-stop-pads-74015/22148619-P?searchTerm=Brake+Pedal+Stop+Pad

I have a 2006 Accord that the cruise control failed on probably a couple years ago. The master toggle switch is embedded with the other buttons on the steering wheel, I replaced the pin in the brake pedal maybe 6 months ago when it literally cracked and fell out leaving my brake lights on until I replaced it but, as of yesterday still a non-functional cruise. Is the brake switch analog or digital meaning either a variable on condition or absolute on/off? If it's variable I'm wondering if I add my own 2 cents to the issue I might get my cruise back rather than tearing into the steering wheel.
@DIYJeff3 жыл бұрын
@Adam Self, it's slightly variable. The pin is part of the problem, but the issue most experience is the rubber pad the pin pushes against depresses over time. An easy way to check if this is your problem is to drive at a speed that you can try to engage the cruise control. Before you engage it, use the tip of your shoe to pull up on the brake pedal (this pushes the pin farther into the depressed pad). While holding the pedal up with the tip of your shoe, engage the cruise control. If it comes on and then you let go of the pedal and it turns off, then a penny (or a new pad from the auto parts store) will fix it.

If the rubber stopper was bad wouldn't your brake lights be on all the time as well?
@DIYJeff4 жыл бұрын
@Scott Collins, sometimes that is the case, but as in the case of my Odyssey, and many people who have commented on my video, the depression in the rubber is just enough so the cruise control won't engage, but not enough to activate the brake light.
@huntercollier6684 жыл бұрын
@@DIYJeff Ah that makes sense. I've got a 92 accord with 60k on it and the cc went out the other day. I saw in another comment you said to lift up on the pedal when pushing the cc set button so if it works when I do that then I'm going to give the penny a try.
@DIYJeff4 жыл бұрын
@@huntercollier668 , yes, if it works well pulling up the peddle it's guaranteed to work. You could always just buy the replacement stopper, but over time it will go bad as well and it definitely cost more than a penny, lol!

dude ive been trying to fix my cruise control for years and never thought it was the brake sensor. I had almost fixed it on accident a while back when the brake lights would stay on when my brake pedal was released. I removed the plastic tab that was broken and super glued two quarters in its place. That fixed the lights, but I didn't realize it needed to be fully pressed for the cruise control to work. So I just super glued two MORE quarters on top of the other two, and now my cruise control will work. Now I'm wondering if the sensor being bad for so long is a cause for the transmission issues im also having. Every once in a while if I'm in D4, something weird happens and the car lights up like a christmas tree, CEL and TCS lights come on and D4 starts flashing. Disconnecting and reconnecting the positive cable on the battery will clear the CEL to pass an inspection, because the light doesn't come back on until something odd happens again.. This only seems to happen in D4 and I've taken to using D3 primarily for city driving and I reserve D4 for highway trips.
@DIYJeff3 жыл бұрын
@Phoenix Gaming, I would highly doubt this would have caused the issue you're experiencing in D4 since pressing the cruise control button didn't have any impact on the throttle or transmission since it sensed the brake pedal was "pressed."
