I took 2 Honda 2000 I generators that were low hour units out of storage that had not been started for over 7 years! That is the honest truth! I poured the very smelly gas out of the tank of both units and filled both with 93 octane gas that had 1 full can 16 oz of Sea foam carb cleaner, gas protector etc mixed in 5 gal of the gas. I tried starting one with 4 pulls of rope starter and could do no more due to my age(80) and CV disease. My wife had called a younger friend age 56 and he showed up in time to try that generator again. He pulled once and it immediately started and ran with 1/2 choke. He did the same with the other and it started after the 6th pull and ran as the other with 1/2 choke. Neither would run with choke off. I ran both for over 5 hrs and shut them down for the night. Today I bought 5 more gal of 93 octane gas and put 5 oz of the same Sea Foam gas preserve - cleaner and filled both generators again. Due to Dorian hurricane I will keep on reserve and take both with me for power when towing a new travel trailer to eastern Canada for a month long trip. We will camp as we can but have generator power if we need power anywhere along the trip. I have a parallel hook up between the units if needed for air conditioner. I think my impression of Honda generators went way up after both units started after over 7 years with no special storage procedures when last run way back when!!

I bought a 30i model for 200$ off Facebook. It was basically new ..the owner had used it for 1 or 2hr. In 7yrs it had the tags and stickers intact with absolutely spotless paint. And switches . The only sad part was the gas tank was full with 83 octane and the owner did not shut the fuel valve. So that fuel sat there rotting away in the tank and dropping into the carb and destroyed the fuel system. I had to clean the tank for 3 days, the carb i had to let it soak in diesel for 7days.. and replaced every fuel components (valve and pipes). I live in India and the honda dealership is not too far from me. I got a whole oem gasket pipe and box accesories kit for 50$. These generators are made here so they are priced lower than what u pay in usa. Like the eu70is (7000is in usa) is only 3000$ and the 30is (3000is in usa) is only 1200$.. anyways the carb and everything cleaned up nicely and i did an oil change after running the the generator for 10mins after restoring the fuel system. It ran perfectly at full load. After oil change i filled the gas tank to brim & let it run my non inverter ac for the night. It ran for 15hrs straight. In eco throttle. I used the non inverter ac cus i wanted to have a variable load on the engine and the rpm to go up and down . This is good for brakin . This year i have converted it to lpg and already used it for 4 days straight after cyclone knocked out electricity for my home. I had a previous honda generator for 20yrs. It was stolen a 2yr ago after i left it outside and forgot that it was outside 😆

These Honda generators are a great value. I purchased an EU2000I in 2011 for $900 (Black Friday sale) and sold it on Craigslist last week for $700. I used the proceeds towards my new EU2200I. Had I purchased one of those cheap generators it would have been worthless after 8 years.
@Maxrotor14 жыл бұрын
I did the same thing. I bought a EU200 around 2010 on Black Friday for 850. When the 2200 came out I sold the 2000 for 700 and purchased the 2200i. When we have a power outage it powers all essential equipment in my home . Even though you can find cheaper products this is the best value.

I have 2 eu2000i units. It was a better option than the larger 138 lb unit. I use stabilizer and always empty tank and purge carb before storage. I pull starter to put in compression cycle to keep moisture out of cylinder. Mine had the oil fill caps swell and they would not unscrew . Bought 2 at local Honda shop, very happy with them.

I have (2) EU 2000 generators. One purchased in 2000 the other in 2005. They have been used a lot! Years of absolutely flawless service, but I do maintain them pretty good. They sometimes run for days at a time when hooked up to my travel trailer.. other times they might sit for months and months. I always use a blend of Sea Foam and Stabil. They have never failed to start. Sometimes it may take quite a lot of pulls on rope starter but once running, they never fail. I Highly recommend these generators, and the new EU 2200 looks tempting but the 2000’s are just fine.

If you overload your generator, you can reset it by 1, unplugging or turning off the load then turning the "on/off" switch to "off" until the red light turns off then quickly turning the on/off switch back to "on" before the engine completely stops turning over. Also, turn the eco-throttle to "off" so you get highest RPMs before connecting large loads to the generator. That way, instead of the generator having to work hard to climb to higher RPM's under a load, it's already at full RPM's and able to more easily supply cleaner power to a heavy start up load like an air compressor or table saw. Once the load is started, you can safely turn the eco throttle to "on" and the gen will lower the RPM's to supply only as much power as the load requires. Unless I'm mistaken, this unit has a built in hour meter. The output LED blinks once for every hundred hours. Not very precise but better than nothing. The hour meters that sense the field off the spark plug wire are nice.

Had one come in for a leaky fuel valve, had to tighten down the screws on the fuel valve. Apperantly this had been recalled by Honda and the whole valve was supposed to be replaced, something I didnt know until the repair was complete (customer was informed that if the valve leaks again that it needs taken to Honda). But while I was working on it, I noticed that the build quality and the parts quality was incredible. It was built like a car using automotive grade parts (of course, cause its Honda). It was also amazingly quiet! Being a small engine mechanic, I always reccomend Honda power equipment to my customers and I own several tools with Honda engines to back that up. This generator is no exception, Hondas are the best in the small engine world!

Great little generator, got mine on CL for $750 unopened. Runs a set of tire warmers at the race track, I recommend you dont use anything but 100% gas in this, E10 from the gas station (anything up to and including 10% ethanol combined with gasoline) will varnish your carb when stored, even when draining the float bowl manually. Using the "rag in intake" trick helps when this happens but a shot of carb cleaner up the main jet is the real fix.

My cable set has three wires, two with banana plugs for the current and one ground wire with fork terminals at each end. The DC cable used to come with the generators. I bought my first one around 2003/4 and it came with the cable and I still have it but have never used it. My second one, a Honda Companion I bought in 2014 had no such cable because it had no DC outlet, which no Companion does have. Just when they dropped adding that DC cable is unknown to me. Hondas are the best built of the portables. My first ran flawlessly for 17 years, as have my others that followed.

I'd like to say something about the 'FUEL OFF' position on the control valve. DO NOT use this for prolonged storage of the generator. Some fuel will still be left in the carb bowl even after the engine dies. The float level inside the float bowl allows the fuel to drop down to the level that kills the engine but not to the point that completely drains the float bowl. The ONLY way to completely drain the float bowl is to remove the plastic cover and use a straight blade screwdriver to loosen the screw at the bottom of the carb bowl. It's seen with a long hose attached in this video and that hose is there to drain the excess gas out. Please do put a rag or paper towel below the tube to catch the fuel drained out and throw the rag/paper away in a vented area.
@SilverCymbal5 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Per the manual you are still supposed to use the drain screw that I show in my other winterizing video. Watch my Yamaha generator video they have a very cool new system for this built right in the generator.

One really great use for the DC output of the genset is in a small camper/Van where you have a battery powered inverter system, you can charge your batteries using a charge controller without needing solar or running the motor. This generator is far more power efficient than running your car to charge a battery bank. These units can be converted to electrical start. Converted to propane or natural gas. They can also be fed off larger tanks using just the engine developed vacuum.
@SilverCymbal6 жыл бұрын

I have no skills as to how to build a system for RVing. I am looking into solar panels, inverters, MPPT.....or recharge one or two batteries to supply electricity for computer, some light, a small heater, a small AC unit...Do you think I would be better off using such a generator to recharge a lithium battery since it can be drained and recharged without any problem as to the life of the battery (vs a lead acid that can only be depleted to a certain extent) and use the lithium battery for my needs? I am thinking of this because it seems to me that the honda, as all generators are still noisy and I would not like to bother people around. SO basically, I would have a fully charged battery that I could use to run certain units. What is your thoughts? I appreciate any info that can help me make an informed decision
@wb5mgr6 жыл бұрын
Karim Kamal A lot depends on where you want to camp. If you were going to camp in a legitimate RV campgrounds, then almost everyone there will use shore power for their rig and you will be able to as well so you should set your system up to be able to take it advantage of that. If you are going to Camp out in a national park or some such other campground where shore power is not available a small generator like this easily meet the noise requirements for legally camping in those areas and not disturbing others. There is a clearly defined noise standard of 60db A weighted at 50 feet by the park service for a motorized device. This generator is designed to meet that. My long answer to your question is this: I would configure your system for a van or small RV to have a small roof mounted Solar setup with MPPT controller. I would place a DC to DC charge controller as well that could be fed by either the engine of the vehicle when driving or the small generator when stationary. IF you are able to budget for a higher end inverter system like a Victron Quattro or Multi then they will charge the battery from a 110v input so you can use the generators 110v input to feed the inverter. The nice thing in this case for example with the Quattro is you can have both the generator, shore power and solar and your battery bank all available and the generator can serve to boost available power.

03-27-2019. Got a recall notice by e-mail and postal mail two days ago on the Honda EU2200I series generators (some serial numbers, not all) concerning the fuel shut-off valve possibly leaking during use, potentially causing a fire or explosion. Requires you to take it to an authorized Honda service center and have the defective part replaced. Just a thought, but wonder if ethanol containing fuel strikes again...?
@SilverCymbal5 жыл бұрын
That us very disappointing to see but recalls do happen. It appears that if you have the affected serial number that the dealer will do the repair for free. Fortunately these are so portable. I wonder how long it will take for all of them to be done.

>^..^< I purchased a eu2000i over ten yeas ago as a stand by house hold gen set. It has over 400 hours on it n still running strong. Also twice ran a week non stop during extended power outages. I even hot fuel it (did not turn it off to re fuel) but I do not recomend this to others do this however.......

Thats terrific to hear. The 2000 was such a reliable machine. I know what you mean about the fuel too, I have done it myself but yes it can be dangerous. Thanks for watching and the comment.

I was surprised that the exhaust note was as loud as it was. Next to my Aipower it was quieter but not by much.

Even with the "Fuel Off" position crappy gas remains in the carb bowl. At minimum one must use fuel stabilizer and, if possible no ethanol fuel. If the unit is not to be used for some time it is still a good idea to drain the carb bowl. Even with stabilized fuel old gas should be drained a replaced with fresh fuel at least annually, if not more.

There is a fuel drain on the bottom of the carb

I've had my EU2200i since the day it came out, I actually had Camping World call me the moment they arrived. Waited years for Honda to release an 1800/2200 unit, and I haven't been disappointed.

Great review . For the price of these Honda gens , they sure don't give you anything extra . They could give you the cords to charge battery or an hour meter . Those items couldn't cost to much .

Good point the generators are fantastic but I agree that some extras would be VERY nice.

You have to check the pull starter cord frequently and adjust the pull handle past the wear spot then retie the keeper knot for the rope will snap after about 100 pulls. Really difficult to fix it then.
@SilverCymbal5 жыл бұрын
I haven't ever heard of that one. I have only had to replace one handle on all my Hondas that was more than 20 years old. I wonder if you may have had a bad starter cord, they really should not need that adjustment for so little use.

very thorough review! one question -- I have an incinerating toilet for off-grid use that uses 120v but uses 20A (requires dedicated 20A output plug). the outlets on this generator -- can you output 20A from either or is there any way to output 20A by some other method? or, should I just consider the higher output unit (3200 model)?

It's on the side as Honda pattened these gens starting with the EX350 the forerunner to all small and inverter generators.. The charging circuit on the EU2 is more for maintaining the battery as are most DC chargers on Honda's and other generators.

I'm looking for a generator as a backup for when we lose power in our home. About 2600 sq. ft. 2-story. I have a well (well water), fridge/freezer, extra stand up freezer, tv, propane range, propane heat, a couple of computers, other small appliances, etc. Which Honda generator do you recommend? Thanks in advance.
