Awesome video. Super informative. I really wish I would have bought my wheelie pump from you. Just got mine from a very popular manufacturer and was disappointed with all the kinks in it and the small 1/4 inch copper tube used and no flaring either. The aluminum tubing on the pumps you're making is top notch. The whole point of the pump is to protect the engine - you get it.

@@GromBeardo mate, you're doing a brilliant job. I have a few bikes, one of them being a 2021 KTM 690 SMCR but I would really like a stunt grom. This is why I have been doing my research first before I start the process of buying the parts and building one. Any chance of getting one of your pumps out to the UK?

Relocation is good for a hard pulling motor. Under hard acceleration oil pulls back into back half of the case.

There's a compromise with any oil pump mod and that's being able to go downhill, especially breaking hard downhill. I put clear tape on the case cover and filled it with the correct amount of oil And with where yours ends above the bottom of the case and that far back you're sucking air going downhill at about 20° or less. If you're running the motor standing at at 12:00 or 1:00 on a 12 bar you need it as far back as possible if you're only doing sit Downs where that case bolt hole is is about ideal.

Aaron......you need to do an update for the 2022 Grom here!.......I am waiting on an oil cooler mod for my bike as I have a 4 row Morin Cooler from an SP but am going to use the Kitaco SP Upper Tappet Cover instead of bringing it out the side near the Oil Filter.......mount it up high as possible and keep the stock air box and TST Cover Intake.....(note I'm running a Belly Pan as well so I opted not to run the cooler lines from there!) like I say Im not a stunt rider but just want good road performance, and here in the Bangkok Heat cooling is optimal!

Great video! What about adding the Kitaco Clutch cover that uses the oil filter? Does doing the oil pump mod bypass the function of the oil filter in the clutch cover?
@GromBeardo
@GromBeardo 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great question. The Kitaco cover just replaces the spinner with a filter element. The pump mod only eliminates the metal screen in the stock system. So, you're just going from spinner to paper filter, but the Kitaco cover is always a great upgrade from stock setup. Hope that makes sense.

Hi Aaron dead interesting video mate , can i ask a question please ?. You show the oil starting off from a chamber on inside of the case at back of where oil pump sits ? why do you not run your new pick up pipe that route and through the hole already there then the oil is going through the screen and less bends in the new pipe , can it be done ? Cheers from Thailand bud 😎😎🤘🤘🇹🇭🇹🇭
@GromBeardo
@GromBeardo 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question, watching and actually thinking about this stuff! If I'm understanding you correctly, which I'm not sure I am, ha, ha. You're talking about extending the pickup starting at the chamber in the middle of the case? Or somewhere before the screen, in the system? Nothing like that would be a "bolt on" modification, from what I'm thinking. Maybe you mean in the side cover and running it back to the rear of the engine? Would still need to plug the hole in the case though.
@karlalton3170
@karlalton3170 3 ай бұрын
@@GromBeardoYes thats correct starting in the chamber near the filter , could you not drill and tap the hole in the rear of chamber ? or get a bulkhead fitting in there ? then just connect your pipe to it and run it to were you do on your mod ? In effect your feeding the chamber with your pipe and not relying on the oil running into the chamber like it does .
@GromBeardo
@GromBeardo 3 ай бұрын
@@karlalton3170Sure, but you'd have to disassemble the whole engine to do that.

Liked the way you used the white wire to show oil flow, but question; in a stock engine, what is the % split of oil from the oil pump going through the side cover vs metering port to the head (explained at 2:55). Reason for asking is I'm planning on running a turbo on the stock engine, and currently I've got an oil cooler off a Kitaco side cover. The question I'm trying to figure out is: would supplying the turbo from the metering port be enough to lubricate it, or would I have to go via the side cover -> turbo?
@GromBeardo
@GromBeardo 2 жыл бұрын
Right on! Always thought a turbo Grom would be a fun little project. Honestly, when I'm starting a new project like that, I'll try and find someone who's done it before and see what they're running. (@gogotankgirl on IG) It's an effort to make things easier on my part and not make the same mistakes. I'd figure they're running off the side cover though. The majority of the oil coming out of the pump goes to the rest of the engine, as opposed to the head. I'd think if you pulled off the head you'd be "stealing" oil from the head. Those are my initial thoughts anyhow 🤷‍♀️

@GromBeardo
@GromBeardo Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do 1.25qt oil change if you're worried about it. If you've got a '22+ I recommend more oil as it seems to help with the transmission bearing noise issues some people have.

When you mod it with the tube and it by pass the filter if the particulates are metal it could be use full to drill and tap a hole on bottom for a oil pan bolt with a neo magnet under the pick up tube. You could also drill a indenchin in case and JB weld a neo under the tube instead of drilling and taping but I don't really trust jb weld. It will help the life of the engine either way exspeclly for people that don't keep up the oil change. Ps Honda should also of put a oil cooler with electric fan instead of having to buy a koso cover 300$👎best motor upgrade only 400$ more than cover hole engine kit zs 190cc 5speed swap come with cover and oil cooler included👍

I would never bypass a filter or screen on a gear pump or any pump for that matter. Your asking for reduced life from your pump and engine.
@GromBeardo

Yes, that should be obvious. It's a choice between starving the pump for oil or bypassing the screen. Which would you choose, ha, ha. I'll take dirty oil over no oil all day long. @@GromBeardo Sounds like you're at the point where you don't want to ride them out because you won't perfect them, now work on getting them up past balance point as fast as possible and hit the brake to bring them down. Just keep practicing that and you'll know when to let off the gas and how hard to hit the brake so you can bring it up from in front of balance point to behind, that's the hardest part is working out how hard to hit the brake and when to get back on the gas to keep them going then you can ride them forever...
