Replacing it only actually gives you more time as the replacements are the exact same design, also depending on how many times that one has been arcing it also burns out the soldering in the main relay, luckily you can just resolder the cracked burnt joint in the main relay, there is a much better way to fix this permanently, it's a little harder to do but will future-proof it, I will be uploading a video of what you need to do in the next few weeks along with many other Honda prelude video from rebuilding the engines, yes engines as I have 2 Honda preludes to upgrading suspension bushes welding and all sorts.

Man, you may have just solved my issue! I swapped my 98 ignition switch to my 2001 because the guy before me did an OBD2 to OBD1 conversion so he could have a viper alarm with remote start. I've been wondering why it takes several tries sometimes to get the engine to crank over.

This happened to me the other day driving on the Motorway doing 80ks and engine stalled, Towy turned up and then it started. Had it Towed to Mechanics and they couldn’t find the fault. I just did what you said in the video and the switches are going on and off intermittently on the Dash, where is best place to get Ignition Switch for 1997 Honda Prelude.

Yeah, it's quite a dangerous problem. It's very hard for mechanics to spot a problem such as that. If you're lucky, try your local wrecking yard, or you can source one from eBay.

Just found this . 98 prelude cranks but won't fire up. Distributor replaced was original. Starter rebuilt. Next will check ignition switch. Main relay clicking fuel pump working. If still have issues will test crankshaft position sensor

Yeah just a simple small video. Not all Prelude came out with a faulty ignition switch. If it works perfectly don't change it.👍

I wish it wasnt so hard to get my usdm prelude up to spec with a manual swap and those non us spec climate controls. WAYYY better than ours, and manuals are becoming hard to find.

That Prelude is the atts SH model rare as hen's teeth over here. I heard manual swap was pretty straightforward. Most people get stuck on the ECU side of things. Because these cars are getting old now, it's getting hard to build them. Just hang in there it takes time.

2001 model Hi all I change was the main relay and everything worked again no problem after. If you not change yours better do it long over due they go bad. For safety measures. Had the car shut off while driving 4 times. Most of the time was at the shoulder to pull over. Shut off the car and turn it back on. Until I bought the new main relay. Might have to change the ignition switch next. Because the light comes on at the key switch and only comes off when I lock the whole door. Don’t forget to clean out your camshaft sensor or get a new one long over due. Right about now. Mine went bad because went over a flood street. Lower plastic cover remove water got in easily.

Your local wrecking yard. You could try Honda, but I'm not too sure if they have them in stock anymore being an old car. Some old accords and civics can also work, but the housing shape is slightly different. So will require some modifying using your old existing housing.

I have a 1997 Prelude. She tends to start, then dies within 1 second after starting. If i leave it for 5 min, i can get her to start but need to quickly rev the engine for a second to ensure she doesnt turn off. If this an Ignition Switch issue? Im so confused. Awesome Video!

When you start your Prelude Wiggle the key in the ignition to see if it gives you any symptoms. Also does it shut off exactly the same time every time? It can be a tricky thing to diagnose cause sometimes they don't give you any warning and the only way of finding out if it is the problem is by changing it in some cases. I've been off the road for a whole month replacing other things to find out it was the ignition switch. Just comes the show with someone with experience like myself can still have problems diagnosing this issue.

@@xtrongarage9666 Ill give it a try. It doesnt really happen at the same time alway. After driving for a few minute, the car dies while at idle. Then restarting is is an issue. I guess finding out why it dies is my primary key. Then i need to figure out why it doesnt stay turned on unless i rest it for 5 min.

It almost sounds like ignition switch problem to me. The one I change in this video did exactly the same thing PRELUDE will run for 5 to10 minutes and shut off without warning. Or sometimes when I start the PRELUDE and let go of the key it would shut off. Those were the two symptoms I was having with the 97 SH

Hey men at first thanks for the video...I already subscribe 👍I would like to ask you something..My car is 1998 SIR JDM...I bought it in 2003 import from Japan..I dont know if this switch was replaced on recall there in Japan...I issuing now i problem and i would like to ask you what is your opinion...Happen to me 2 years ago when i was driving my lud die in middle of the way and i could switch on..Whenni was turning the key i hear a noice click only and nothing happen like my starter was dead...After 5 minutes car start normaly...Since then i never had the same problem but from time to time when i try to switch on the car im hearing the same click ( like starter died) and i have to try second time so car will turn on...I replace my starter 2 years ago when i was thinking that was my problem..The strange think is that this is happening from time to time...Some time i dont have problem for 6 months lets say and then happen 2 times in a week...But never die when im driving like you described on video Just a simple click like starter dont react and nothing more..After second try car is on and no any problem..What you believe...Is it any way to check if my ignition switch is faulty? Thanks a lot men

Appreciate you Subscribing. They are all made by the same manufacture. It doesn't matter if It was important for japan besides they can come with exclusive japanese extras. For example, exclusive typeS parts. Ignition switches can be tricky to diagnose at times. They can work perfectly fine but then they can do exactly what you describe to me. That's why they can be dangerous when faulty. To be on the safe side, I would highly recommend changing the ignition switch to see if your symptoms are still present. Considering you're been dealing with this issue on an off for two years. Generally, when it comes to electronical problems, it leads to the ignition switch. Starting the PRELUDE or just sitting in idle randomly shutting off without warning. If i'm wrong, it's no big deal. At least you have a spare ignition switch. Therefore, you can guarantee yourself there's nothing wrong with that area. When it happen to me? I tried every trick in the book to find out if it was the Ignition switch. Sometimes the only way is by changing it. I hope this helps. Thank you for reaching out. All the best with the build.

Smae issue happened to me. Car randomly turned off and on for a split second in the begining and now it wont even start properly without me having to step on the gas pedal like an idiot. Ordered an aftermarket ignition switch. Will see if this will fix the issue.

It's a terrible problem. I have salvaged so many second-hand used ones from wrecking yards. An aftermarket one would probably be the best option.

Hi I have prelude 5th gen 1998 I’ve noticed that it’s been at first hard to turn the key in ignition when I brought the car on a little road trip in front of a stop sign it turned off and tried to turn it on by keep shutting off then on the 5th try it turned on then drove back 30 minutes and the car had no problems. I turned the car off then back on then it wouldn’t start then repeated it then it finally did could this be the switch ignition?

Most likely it would be the ignition switch it was a recall problem on that generation. Also if it's hard to turn the key spray, a little bit of WD-40 in ignition key barrel.
