I had 05 and 08 AP2s back in the day, and stupidly sold them. But I recently acquired an all-original low-mileage 05 in beautiful condition (was owned by an actual little old lady). Within 15 seconds of driving it I remembered how special these cars are. Despite being a fun little convertible, it drives with a level of composure and sophistication that is unparalleled. Of course the engine is fantastic, and the shifter has widely been recognized as one of the best of all time. I've owned a lot of great sports cars over the years, but the fact that I sought out an S2000 all these years later says it all. It's hard to do better. I feel like the 04-05 were the best AP2 models, since they had the original seat design with the headrest cutouts, old fashioned throttle by cable, no stability control, and really nice clean five V-spoke wheels. 06-07 had plainer seats, throttle by wire, electronic nannies (VSA), and a cluttered wheel design. Things got a little better for 08-09 with improved seats and they went back to five spoke wheels, but the car was canceled after the 09 model year since sales had dropped off significantly. The S2000 was ahead of its time in the early years, forgotten in the later years, and now cherished here in the future. Maybe that's what makes it so timeless? BTW, when the S2000 AP1 debuted in showrooms in 1999, they were regularly marked up to $50K or more (and people paid it). Think about how much $50K was in 1999! That cooled off by the next model year and pricing remained sane throughout the remaining model years. Sadly, 10 years later they couldn't give them away. I remember a dealer had a 2009 CR model sitting in the showroom for almost a year and offered it to me well below MSRP. What a dummy I was passing on the car, since a nice clean CR is worth well in excess of $100K now.

Thanks for the comment & detailed feedback! Super lucky to have owned multiple S2000s! Yes, it really was (and is) such a special vehicle! I’m gonna try to do an AP1 and CR review at some point too! And yes, a low mileage CR can go closer to $200k these days!

You forgot to mention the “secret” storage compartment, accessible through the side glove compartment by raising the lid with the wind deflector. Great review though! Makes me happy that I still own mine since I bought it new in 2002

The “secret” compartment isn’t intuitive to find but it’s described in the owner’s manual (page 66). Some people find its placement strange but I think it fits in with the s2000’s use of vtec… maximizing the most out of available space. My color combo is Suzuka Blue. Silverstone Metallic (my original color choice) wasn’t available in 2002 but I don’t regret my decision. Will definitely be subscribing to your channel, Jonathan.

Always loved this car! Great video! My dad was considering this car in 2001 but he ended up with a BMW M roadster instead. That car was more powerful and faster but he had so many issues with the car he probably would have been happier with the S2000

i had an 05 AP2 in silverstone. it was the last model year of the drive-by-cable AP2 before it switched over to DBW. no traction control but was perfectly set up in stock form for that 2.2L with the smoother torque curve. still the best driving honda ever in my opinion, even better than the NSX (but then again the S2K does have like 10+ yrs of technology on the NSX lol). Would love to see another S2K developed and launched, but even if a new model is better in every way, it's gonna be nearly impossible to get that "raw" feeling the S2K's are known for again in current times.

Thanks for the comment & feedback! Yes, as always, you make a lot of good points! S2K is truly a special car, and it will be hard to replicate that raw & visceral feeling moving forward! Don’t put it past a bunch of smart engineers though to figure out a way though!

@Drive_Culture I am one who likes the AP2 better. I think it looks better and as far as the driving experience, I think you summed up how amazing it is, even if it doesn't redline at 9k. And that RED! Just in time for the holidays! If Honda brought back a gem like this, I think it would break youtube haha!

It's not a stop start button. Its a start button. You turn it off with the key. It will grind the starter if you press the button when it is running.

@@Drive_Culture its hard to adapt too. All modern cars have a start stop button. If i let someone drive my S2000 its the first thing i tell them to save my starter.

I am fortunate to have both a AP1 S2000 and NA1 NSX. In my opinion the NSX is the best manual transmission that Honda ever did. On the NSX the gears are really tall. So tall on a tight corner you need to downshift to 1st. The synchros are so good you can do it without complaint.

We really need an AP3 gen S2000. Mazda is really in a class of their own with nobody giving them any competition. I'd be even okay if Acura picks up the S2000, if Honda themselves can't bring themselves to do it. An 8000 RPM and 280hp and 240lb-ft of tq AP3 S2000 would be lit. I would be okay of its the 1st turbocharged S2000 as long as the S2000 can come back. Have you seen the white modern-day S2000R reworked by Evasive Motorsports in California?
