I worked at a Honda dealer in 2005 before I left for the Marine Corps. Super easy gig, the cars sold them selves. The dealership had a “test loop” comprised of back roads and highways. We had a used S2000 that we used as our test car whenever someone was looking at a new S2000. One day a gentleman came in and wanted the Blue S2 that we had on the floor but wasn’t sure. I proceeded to tske him to the test loop to seal the deal, he kept on shifting at 6000 RPM, darn thing wasn’t even into vtec yet. I asked him to get out, and than I drove it. I proceeded to beat it with in an inch of its life, 9k shifts for 10 minutes. The customer paid me cash for the floor model 20 minutes later. Epic cars.

I just bought this car 2 months ago and absolutely love this car. Its been my dream car ever since I was in high school and I finally saved up enough money to buy one. With the prices of S2Ks going up I knew I had to buy one now before they get out of my price range. I just got a 2001 AP1 in White with a tan interior for 14k, 176k on chasis and 2k on rebuilt motor. My goodness this car is so much fun to drive with the top down. Previous owner added a K&N intake and Invidia Q300 exhuast...let me tell you with the top down reving up to 9k rpms theres nothing like it. You can hear the engine breathe whenever it hits VTEC at 6k RPMs and up. The car just begs you to rev it up when you're under 6k rpms. It brings a smile to my face every time I drive it and would reccomend buying this car if you ever wanted one. Seriously a RWD Honda that has 240 HP stock that revs up to 9k RPMs is legendary...don't get me wrong I love my K, H, and B series engines but the F series motor is so unique. This car isn't the fastest but it is most fun to drive all the time. If I wanted fast I could buy a newer car with more HP but thats not what this car is all about. Trust me buy this car, put the top down, rev it up to 9k or 8.2k on the AP2 and you'll understand what I mean. If you buy one please cherish these cars, they are only getting rarer to find in good condition. Many for sale are salvaged title going up to 20k on fb marketplace and offer up. Even one on offer up that was gutted with hentai anime stickers and wasn't well maintained sold for 20k.

Despite what a lot of people say - I don't think S2000's are slow (coming from a guy who use to own a Toyota with a twin-turbo JZ, however much that's worth). For something with a 2-liter N/A engine these cars are stupid fast. And they're unique in that they tolerate being beat on, and moreover they encourage it and make it very easy - the switchgear in an S2K makes the experience so fluid and effortless that it's just unbelievable. Another thing I love about this car is that - usually in a manual car when you upshift the engine winds up in a place where it's a bit lethargic, whereas in an S2K after the upshift the revs are about where a normal engine would be redlining. It's an experience that's totally unique to the S2K with its insane redline and short ratios.

Great video. I have been waiting for this. Never owned a CR but i’ve owned 3 AP2 S2000s. My current iRio Yellow Pearl is a keeper. This and the E46 M3 are the best bang for the buck when you factor in price and I would give the edge to the S2K due to reliability and less maintenance. Buy one while you still can

This was my first car. I remember being 18 year old and flying down to Germany and bought it with a friend just after getting my drivers licence. This was at the time when everyone was buying either the BMW Z3 or the Mecedes SLK. It was an amazing feeling with the sun feather RPM meter. The complete ferocity at higher RPM. Great memories.

LOVED my AP1! Miss it terribly. 9k redline was insane, shifter divine and incredible handling. Neutral, mild understeer, big oversteer all available via steering, throttle and careful weight management. I will respectfully disagree with Thomas (love you guys) on one point... Your ears will bleed and you will need aspirin after a few hour cruise. Cross-country... Forget it. Still, no car has ever made me laugh out loud so much. miss my ap1 too. I didnt have an aftermarket exhaust though so my road trips were pretty sublime. It was tastefully cosmetically modded, but the only performance mod I really enjoyed was the ARC intake box. Huge resonating chamber box that had a filter on 3 sides and at 9k rpm, that engine sang so loudly it didnt need an exhaust.

I've been daily driving an ND1 Miata for almost 4 years now, and I absolutely love it. But if Honda made a new S2000, I'd seriously consider buying one. But of course, they won't. And even if they did, it would be watered down and have a turbo instead of a high-revving NA engine. Exception for the Civic Type R, Honda has really lost its way. C'mon, Honda. Build a new S2000, with an NA engine and a manual, and price it somewhere between a top trim Miata and a base Boxter. They will sell. (Oh, great video as usual, by the way!)

Got to drive a friend's on a mountain road, and it was sensational. The first time I crossed 6500 rpm at full throttle, I couldn't help but laugh, shift and do it again. My issues were with the stock 2001's handling that was actually quite uncommunicative after my FRS, so I didn't trust the car up to the limit. No matter though, because top down on a sunny day, revving that engine out is an experience I'll never forget. I came home after that first drive wanting to buy one.

The first-gen had a little too much roll stiffness in the rear end and could swap ends unexpectedly. That can be fixed by playing with springs and sway bars, which Honda did with the AP2.

lol I literally just bought one this weekend and drove it up from LA back to the Bay Area. EPIC car and loads of fun. I think my 997.2 GT3 will see a lot less miles now that this is in my stable. The S2000 is just far more approachable on everyday speed. The 2.2L gets great MPG and it's dead reliable if you treat it right because it is a Honda. It's just a fantastic little machine. As James and Thomas have noted, your sitting position is a bit high, lack of steering adjustability is just weird for these days and age. The car feels slow when you're driving it but strangely feels much quickly as a passenger (and you sit lower too). The brakes don't bite like the Germans and doesn't inspire the same level of confidence but it makes heel-toeing a lot easier on mountain roads when you're going 6 or 7/10s. The Steering is a bit numb but feedbacks from everything else sorta made up for it (Sort of, you still want more feedback occasionally). The shifter and the chassis balance are the crown jewel of this car however. Butter smooth and the gear ratio is so close you end up shifting all the time - exactly what you want in a car like this. The ride is firm, it's loud because its a softtop convertible, and on long roadtrips it's an exhausting car to drive. But I really don't care. It's still brilliant, and in some respect still a better roadster than the ND2.

Honda has lost their core competency of naturally-aspirated high-revving engines. The new S2000 would have a 1.5 turbo 4 with a 6500 rpm redline and it would play the old S2000 noises through the speakers, just like the Si does.

I bought one in 2008 and since then I can't live without it. I took it to circuits such as Imola, Nurburgring, Franciacorta, Modena, Cremona and then I traveled more than 20,000km in the Italian Alps, from the Stelvio to the Dolomites. When I ride these mountain roads and hear her scream at 9000 rpm I get goosebumps, and she still manages it after 14 years. It doesn't matter if it's not as fast as a Golf R, it has so much fun that you can forgive everything. Love from Italy.

AP1 or AP2? The original AP1s had plastic windows that flapped a lot. I got mine replaced with a glass window when it was showing signs of wear. You can also add in some washers to the striker plates that the roof latches onto, pulling the roof down lower and eliminating the majority of wind noise. There's still much more road noise than other cars and the 4k rpm engine drone at 70-80 sucks but after making changes to my roof I can talk without raising my voice on the highway now.

This car was revolutionary at the time, and look at the price of its competitors like the z3/z4 and porsche boxster. The price is the price for a reason, as more and more people realise we will never again have cars like this, you either experience it now, at a higher and higher price or never again. Some say that this is the ultimate drivers car, not on pace but in terms of engagement, and driver feel. You could never fall asleep in this like you can in modern sports cars. The limit of these cars is much more than meets the eye, and not that I'm doubting his driving skills at all, but I think it takes a very special driver to extract the maximum speed out of this car which is attractive in itself, the challenge. Amazing video as always, so glad you covered the S2000, my dream car and I'd have to agree with Thomas, it's peak roadster!

@@PURENT The point wasn't to make money, they do that with their other FWD cars, it was a gift to themselves. To show the world what they can do and since they didn't make any money on them, you can be sure whoever bought one was getting full value for their money.
