Thank you for sharing William. Your words are relevant to us all but especially to me. I am 66 and have been taking photographs since my teens. I have recently been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's and I am in the process of relearning, rediscovering photography. I can no longer travel to remote locations or go bushwalking like I used to. So I spend time wondering around my local parks and gardens. each time I go out is a new experience. I find mirrorless cameras and the choice of lens too complex and overwhelming. My solution is to revert to pocket cameras (Canon SX730 and Olympus TG6). This has allowed me to continue to engage in photography and it is like being a beginner all over again. I have forgotten where I was taking this. I apologize for rambling but wanted to say that I find you words and images inspirational. Many thanks.

I’ll be 80 this summer and have been endowed with a joy of photography since I was 12. Only in the past decade have I truly embraced a passion for creating with a lens and have begun to understand the essential nature of the art form. And you hit the absolute essence of the experience: be here now ... be in the moment that your eyes and understanding yield a vision that may be possible to shape with whatever equipment and skill -- at whatever level. It’s a process that continues throughout the full spectrum of being alive and aware. This morning while sitting the bathroom, i noticed my all white, plastic hearing aid charger was open a half centimeter with two tiny green leds glowing in the dark within -- a perfect robot head. I repositioned an antique Japanese carved wooden bear holding a salmon in its mouth to look back at the glowing eyes, grabbed the tripod, camera, remote release and a hand held variable temp LED to fill the bear’s dark wood face and then started laughing at the situation. It was the most fun I've had taking a picture in six months. Thank you for your fine summation of the reality of the creative process.

Wow... now this is profound... truly. I see your "work" your "art" and I must say I feel "gobsmacked" by it all! But what I feel is most remarkable is you. I've never known anyone quite like you. In the movie "THE WAY... Tom's life reflects the central theme of the movie: that the life you live - the experiences you seek, the relationships you build, the knowledge you acquire, the spirituality you explore, and the journey of faith you walk - is more important than the ways others try to define us, or how we too often define ourselves ...". I sense that spirituality is in you and expressed in all you do... It's truly a blessing to know and learn from you... stay blessed and please keep us posted! 🙏

I hope this doesn't come off as odd, but Will, I love your mind. These chats... I appreciate you letting us in a little bit. Sometimes, there are things that go unsaid. Folks making their way without any guidance, can listen to these words an know, it's OK. The pressure we put on ourselves in our journey can make us feel somewhat overwhelmed. I stumbled on a new location last weekend. I struggled to get a good composition, but I could see images everywhere. I was putting too much pressure on myself to create something. Anything. I decided to take a step back, and revisit the location without a camera. (It is in the truck, but not with me.) This place is beautiful. I am going to go and enjoy the nature there. I will take my time, and will document what speaks to me. After this video, I know I am not crazy. It isn't just me. Sometimes, flying solo... you question yourself. I know I do daily. These types of vids help to ensure me that I am in very good company. Thanks for sharing Will!!

Gosh, I listened to your words and it was like you were describing my photography journey and my life as it is now. I am currently in the place where I have lost my passion and focus far too much on the technical things. I long to feel the excitement that I once did, seeing beauty in almost everything I looked at. I am at the point where if all things don't align like weather, time etc I just don't bother. So, I am going to take that step back like you suggested and just get myself out there and just start enjoying the "being out there" like I used to. I know I will find my old self again. Thanks William. I absolutely adore you and your work. You are a true gem.

Wow William you could have been speaking about me. I used to love photography and getting out to shoot, for me it was the seashore that was my happy place. Then I started shooting with competitions in mind and never being satisfied, and slowly the enjoyment of photography faded. Then I just went for a walk on the beach, the camera was with me, but I just took shots of what interested me without any consideration for competitions. At the end of the day, I was so much happier with what I had taken than I had been for a long time.

Thanks for sharing this William. It's a good reminder. For me landscape photography is about one or all of three things. The amazing location I find myself in, the adventure it took to get there and lastly the mates you are shooting with. I can look at any of my photos and tell you anything about those three points. But with trying to increase my social and starting doing vlogs, it's easy to lose sight. I had a moment a couple of weeks ago while editing photos and a vlog of Roy's Peak. My focus had been on getting good images for social media. As I watched back my vlog, the emotions hit me. I looked at the images and I realised what I had achieved that morning just getting up Roy's and it hit me, what I had witnessed up there. That refocused me on why I love shooting. For me. Not for the likes. Appreciate your work mate. You are inspiring.

I feel inspired after this. It just seems so obvious to just take in nature as it is after your words. Been trying to take photos of early spring for weeks without results. It is just dead trees, twigs and gray scale everywhere. I can't force a picture in those conditions no matter how hard I try. I should just bring my camera in case I stumble across a composition, more so right now and I guess moving on aswell.

of all the vids I've watched recently, I have gotten the most inspiration from this one. Almost all of the others deal with the more technical aspects of photograpghy, editing, gear, etc. Your words and ideas really struck a chord for me. Words of wisdom and at the perfect timing for me. I am at that point when I want to return to photography full time, but not having the gear I wish I had. So I kept postponing this and stressing out that things don't work quite as I wish they would. But then is so true... when I go out to take a photo, even just for fun... it feels so good and makes me remember why I like it so much. In late life, it's a real pleasure to revisit old photographs that you have forgotten long ago. At 80, with 4 months at home post-surgery and dealing with other physical limitations, I'm glad I took a camera with me during those years. Advances in post-processing software have helped improve images like I couldn't image years ago. Thanks for your thoughts.

This. This this this this. Is the kind of video and words that resonate the most with me. Exactly what I needed to hear (and probably need to hear every month because it's just so easy to forget, haha). It can be so easy to get stuck because it just becomes too overwhelming to keep striving for better and better, especially after 15 years already dedicated the craft. 😂 But little reminders like this take me right back to the heart of it, what made me fall in love with photography in the first place - just putting yourself out there, in the way of nature, and letting art happen organically as the inspiration comes. The best and most freeing feeling. 🥰 Thanks for this heartfelt reminder, Will! I'm inspired now, hehe.

Hi Will & Hello from Oz, thankyou so much for that talk. I'm in my mid (almost late 70's) & have been a huge admirer of your work since finding you on KZbin. You have God's gift of seeing images in things that a lot of us fail to see & I dream of getting images that you would call failures but it's my love of being out with my camera that keeps me going. To hear your words only inspires me more to enjoy & try to improve but without the added pressure. Cheers Mate

I’ve actually been wondering about you and this specific topic over the last few months. I have not been inspired much and I wondered how you keep yourself going, but I knew the answer anyway! I’ve found it tough to get out because memories everywhere but when I do I really can lose myself and not have to think about anything but that moment, addictive! The only part I don’t so much enjoy is uploading to a platform, but I know to keep it ticking over as when you need it (like with the petition) it’s good to have.. and also like to be part of a community of sorts… anyway I’ll stop rambling haha.. there’s some absolutely spectacular work in your portfolio so even if you did feel pressured any of the time, it doesn’t show 🙂

Couldn't agree more with you! I too felt the urge and desire to get out and always get great images. That shouldn't be the main focus. The importance is to enjoy the presence of nature and your inner peace while you are out shooting pictures. Good, bad or none at all. Wolfgang

Could not agree more . I often struggle with motivation, forcing myself to take photos when the mood is not there but the pressure to achieve is. One of my best experiences was deciding at 10PM to jump in the van with my 9 year old son, drive 2 hours to Nugget Point, sleep in the van and get up for sunrise photos of the lighthouse. The experience, the moment of being there at the break of day with my son, his camera on his tripod also is something I will never forget. I was very pleased with the images but the experience is something that makes those photos connect with me in a much deeper way. Great content William, all the best. John Pouw, Invercargill.

Wise words Will and put across so well. Landscape photography is so much about the experience and enjoying that moment in nature. A good photo doesn't happen on every occasion but when it does it is the icing on the cake.

My biggest obstacle to photography is the horrendous technical impediment known as social media algorithms. I can’t make any headway at all and people simply don’t see my work, no matter what I try. Being an artist with nowhere to exhibit the art, is tragic in its own ways.

Wise words mate, not just for photography but for life in general. We live in a time where overwhelm and self-doubt is always knocking on the door to get in if we let it. So important to stop, take a breath and remember the why.

Nice video. I enjoyed the log side chat. I experience that burn out once or twice a year. My solution is just go out and like you said with no preconceived ideas. I compare it to being like a sponge. A sponge is not very useful until it absorbs first. Carry on, mate.

This video needs to be shared like wildfire. I don’t think about getting better much anymore but rather I just try to keep it fun and interesting. What hit me is I couldn’t upgrade my storage so I deleted almost 1.5TB of raw files. Because they were preconceived ideas that just didn’t work. I wasn’t moved or attached to them. The 0.5 I kept I have backed up because those moments are rare and I just wandered around letting the landscape come to me. It was in Arizona, I did not know the area one bit which meant I had no end goals to get to. It was just wander and shoot. Those photos are on my wall and more from there need to end up on my wall. William this video is just spot on.
