I feel that Spenny is really trying (and doing a good job at) stepping it up and leading now that Andy's gone. It's what it looks like onscreen to me anyway. He's more charismatic and accurate than he used to let on. Way to go Spencer.

King said in some interviews that he was heavy on cocaine and alcohol in the 80s and that it influenced his writing. I think that's the reason for some of the really really weird parts of IT.

Oh no, you nailed it. He jumped the shark with the DT books. Book 5 was pretty much ok, aside from the weird Harry Potter references. But after that, dialed to 11 self indulgence. Apparently it comes down to pre and post car accident when he was hit by a van. After that, he introduced him self as a character and ruined his best work.

7:25 Beginning of "Beneath the City" chapter highlights Pennywise can't or hasn't been able to beat/eat the Loser's Club. It would explain why he suspends Beverly Marsh in stasis rather than eating her; if you notice he even has a minor convulsion which would indicate perhaps his plan to eat Beverly is unsuccessful. They are being protected by Maturin or their bond is too strong, or whatever. I'm not saying that simple moment in the movie or the first few pages of the chapter are completely bulletproofing the story behind It plot-wise or consistency wise, but it looks like that might be what happened as to why he didn't kill Beverly when he had her. Because he couldn't, because the Loser's Club doesn't know it yet but they are bad-asses.

King was on drugs when he wrote the sex scene. He doesn't even remember writing it. What I want to know is how come the editors and other people at the publishing company not question it.
@dipperjc
@dipperjc 6 жыл бұрын
The 80s was a simpler time. He wasn't on drugs writing it, and they didn't question it, because it wasn't the big paranoid deal it is today. It was no more unusual to that time period than watching people smoke on airplanes. The kids of the day weren't china dolls.
@willowsmith4614
@willowsmith4614 6 жыл бұрын
dipper so what you are saying is a gang bang scene with barely teenagers was just cool in the 80s? I’m glad we went away from thinking a grown ass adult writing a gang bang scene with barely pubescent kids is okay. I love Stephen King but holy shit was that part in the book the most bizarre in a story about a celestial turtle talking to a kid.
@dipperjc
@dipperjc 6 жыл бұрын
Well let's be clear - not *barely* pubescent, this adaptation aged them up to 13. In the books they're 11. And I don't know about 'cool', per se, but it was *art*, and people had more respect for the canvas when it came to art back then. Nothing was too far.

If you're looking for a "book accurate" adaptation of The Shining, the mini series Stephen King did back in the 90's was pretty good, I actually like it more than Kubrick's. Kubrick didn't seem to get (or just didn't care) that the villain of the story wasn't Jack Torrance, it was the Overlook Hotel itself.
@Boogeypop80
@Boogeypop80 6 жыл бұрын
Even in the Kubrick version you know it's the Overlook. Jack was an ok father ( I think they mentioned one incident though) but that clearly the hotel started to twist him to what he ends up being. Kubrick certainly made that clear in his adaptation.

I think as far as Ben getting Mike's role they basically cut out most of the references to Ben wanting to be an architect (they don't build the dam, etc) but things could still change by the sequel. And in the book Stan doesn't get as much development because of what happens to him when he finds out that IT came back.

23:46, Here's an idea for a Screen Junkies Show episode: Stephen King's Hal (Where we take every Stephen King movie where the main monster is replaced with Hal Rudnick) The Shining (1980) - Swap out Jack Nicholson with Hal Cujo (1983) - Swap out Cujo with Hal Carrie (2013) - Swap out Carrie with Hal IT: Chapter One (2017) - Swap out Pennywise with Hal Okay, you get the picture

Mikes role in It Chapter 2 has been slightly disclosed. Well Ben is the bookworm who spends a lot of time in the library, so they kinda combined the history stuff with that (Ben reading the history of derry book), rather than making them separate scenes and using up more time. I hate when they cut people's character development, but it makes sense kinda

Stanley is actually pretty well-represented here. He didn't have a lot of lines in the book either. He even described himself as the kid that went an entire year of school without saying anything. But yeah, Mike got totally shafted. He's basically the guy writing the story.

I am okay with almost everything in the book It. The Turtle, Chud rituals, all that, but yeahhh the group sex tunnel scene in the book was so unnecessary and gross and weird that it very nearly ruined the entire book for me- a book which is so epic and original, I would've loved it if not for that disgusting, pointless scene. I was dreading it the whole book, because someone warned me about it. Now I have to pretend that scene isn't in the book or just toss it.

It wasn't all that scary to me, and I am wondering if that means something is wrong with me or if I am too cynical or what. There were actually moments where I laughed because it was so silly. Pennywise krumping in the cave? It wasn't scary at all! That part where they start freaking out at the slide projector? Like...yall can't just unplug it? I was also annoyed at how drastically they sidelined the Black kid when he is actually kind of the hero of the story? The production design was great though, I can't take that away from it. But I wasn't super impressed.
