Is that a trick question? I have seen M. Night Shyamalan movies in the order of their theatrical release which I gather from the posted question is a little odd? That's ok, I like odd and bat s*** crazy movies like The Happening (2008).

although it was occurring to me right along with as I was watching it that it'd actually be not really much difficult or complicated at all to prove David's abilities to an objective third party. Besides the easiest one of almost unmatched brute force strength that someone with the physical makeup as a 60 year old Bruce Willis simply shouldn't have, his "seeing" power could also be demonstrated. Sure it might take a little paperwork, but contact the nearest prison, go into the convicts serving for violent crimes, and pick as few as 5 completely at random. Someone in the doctor's position should be able to have them furloughed to the hospital for barely even half a day, have David touch them, and he'll be able to see a vision of at least one of their crimes scenes, information he otherwise couldn't possibly know (especially when he does it to all of them). Now, I know a likely response to that would be "but she WASN'T an objective 3rd party, she didn't want them to be able to overtly demonstrate their powers", given the 'secret mission' she was really on, but David didn't know that. Even if it wouldn't have worked anyway because of her agenda, it seems very reasonable David would've come up with that or any number of other arguments to TRY to get out of a place he very much did not want to be. I mean part of what kinda bothers me is they actually DO have a moment where David says "But you can't possibly explain away all of it", and... that's it. He doesn't even really advocate anymore for his own case.

"The Overseer" that is one awkwardly poor name for a superhero, I know that. It actually reminds me a little of the running joke about the original band name in "That Thing You Do", like with trying to spell the Wonders but to be different as the number one, "the Oneders", so people thought it was pronounced like "oh-need-ers" lol So like in this movie's sake, there's no way at least some people aren't saying the "seer" part as only one syllable.

Lee Anderson they're characters who are villains sometimes but anti-heroes when they get their own books, mostly. A villain book with no hero is just a person in a costume doing crimes.

I'm with Dan. I really loved Glass and thought it was such an interesting movie even if most people don't like it. But I did enjoy the discussion of the film and listening to everyone v. Dan talk about what worked for them and what didn't. I always love a good civilized movie debate.

I think Dan was on the money. Mr Glass actually said "this is an origin movie". How can you say you missed that? I was on a downer after David's death, but I can see why they did it, and I loved the rest of the movie.

oh I have very little doubt that he did. Unfortunately completely fulfilling your own intentions in a given endeavor doesn't itself equate it to being great lol I mean, in that way, I could say at least I would respect M Night some for it (well and the self-financing, I hadn't known he'd done that), because really anything you're doing that's artistic, the only person you ever should or can be accountable to is yourself.

Yes, this. Through this movie, I've found that a big reason I like certain movies, when others don't, is because it's successful at what it's trying to do. I think this is a movie that could have delivered it's message better, but I suppose that an interesting message makes me, personally, pretty forgiving of the execution of it's delivery.

I am with Dan on this too. I loved it and was genuinely surprised and satisfied at the end. It made me want more films in this universe. And Villians sign was mostly a call back to the store in unbreakable too. It's the same one.

Okay forgive me but I kinda roll my eyes when I see people break out this rationale for divisive opinion. It's very possible to completely "get" a movie and what the filmmaker was trying to do AND find it quite inferior. For one I don't think M Night is quite as 'deep' as some fans would seem to think. And don't get me wrong I don't say this as a blanket hater, I've really liked a good few many of his films, including The Village (which I somehow miraculously stayed ignorant about the nature of the twist despite not seeing the movie til like a solid 4 years after it came out, and it was something I didn't guess while watching). And to hit on something the guys brought up, no I don't think really any fan was coming into Glass expecting it to be anywhere even close to something akin to the MCU despite it being "about comic books/superheros", and so their dislike would've been rooted in the wide gulf between two examples like that. I just thought there were a number of plot and character elements that made little to no sense, even with re-looking at the first 90 minutes thru the lens of knowing the ending.

Hey, Lon, there are villain comics, especially if you stretch the definition. They usually aren't as good (The Joker got what s widely considered to be a terrible miniseries), but some of them are pretty good, even if they are limited time engagements. Long runners include The Suicide Squad, which features villains doing good deeds because they have to (and some eventually reform somewhat. Killer Croc even sponsers Speedy/Arsenal for AA), Superior Spider-Man, which is about a more villainous or anti-hero Spidey after Doctor Octavius swaps minds, and Secret Empire, the story of when Hydra, led by Captain America, conquers the United States.

I feel for Dan on this one. Lon reminds me of a lot of friends I have when I try to have a movie discussion with people I disagree with. I'm on Dan's side of this. People tend to hate film's that are different. They want to watch another MCU type movie over and over. I loved the metaphor of the film more than anything which these guys don't understand. The metaphor is.. no matter who tries to take your identity away from you, you are what/who you are. And you are what you believe you are or what you believe in. And in the end Glass won, and Ellie Staple lost. Glass is genius and just like the film Us. These film's aren't for everybody. But the main thing is "Don't criticize what you can't understand".

I'm with Dan on this. I'm a Glass defender. Every arguement is basically the point. Calling out tropes, blurring lines between what's super and what's just great human ability, and the obvious dialogue, it's all the point. Into the Spiderverse had Miles literally reading a Spiderman comic book as he was going through each panel's motions in real life. Very meta way to turn into Spiderman. Into the Spiderverse was an actual masterpiece, though. I just get what M Night did. And I'm not mad. And I do get why people would hate it. But hearing people argue the actual points is odd to me. We are truly spoiled with Comic Movies.

@@itsharryhagen That Clover group were actively trying to tell them that they're normal so that they wouldn't realise their true potential. In doing so they were also trying to convince the audience. At no point did Shyamalan actually serve the message that superheroes arent real. He wanted to plant doubt in both the characters and the audience. As Dan says, if you go in with unrealistic expectations of what a superhero Shyamalan film is then that's on you. Obviously many people did, but I think they've also been influenced by what superhero movies are nowadays.

Glass was by far my favorite movie of the year. An amazing character piece that subverts expectations, allows you to actually experience the anger and sadness of death, and shows a realistic example of how humans would fight against the actual development of uncontrolled members of the population gaining superpowers.

Also, between Venom, Deathstroke, Foes of Spider-Man, Suicide Squad, Joker, Harley Quinn, Secret Six, and Thunderbolts, I'd say that there are *plenty* enough villain comics to fill a small section of a store

The implication of the “Superman started as just being able to lift cars.” thing was that Superman was based on real-life strong men who could lift cars, and that’s what real life super powers are like, as The Beast does it. Superman was embellished over time to an unrealistic level, which made people think that super powers have to be that extreme and flashy in order to be super powers. But in real life, super powers manifest themselves more subtly, which is why people overlook them in favor of only recognizing the fictional version as qualifying.

Glass was great. I'm glad he got to make it as he wanted, and I'm glad I got to see it. As always with an M. Night movie my main issue with it is regarding casting and actor directing, specially extras, which yanks me the fuck out of the experience in every single movie of his. I've gotten used to his weird shortcomings thought, and so I was able to enjoy Glass. Very exciting, beautifully shot, intimate film.

I feel Dan's frustration when defending the movie to the others. I liked the first hour and half of the movie very much. The 20 minutes of confrontation weren't bad in the ideas it presented, it was bad in its execution, imo. It was over the top, and M. Night unfortunately has convinced himself that he's good at the twist part of the movies, when in reality he's good at drama. He's great at examining characters whose life have been shattered and they're trying to put all the pieces back together, which is why Unbreakable and Split work so well. The last 10 minutes when it's revealed what Mr. Glass's plan was all along redeemed those 20 minutes of poor execution of good ideas.

The more it is discussed, the more I find it close to Aranofski's Mother! For making a film mainly due to pure catharsis. A) interesting, of rhymes on the social commentary (kids doing viral internet things) , until you feel B) disgusted, when the reason behind the rhyme is spelled out on the 3rd act with Glass Masterplan speech, then C) Feel for Shyamalan when his idea about Comicbook cinematic universe was perhaps shut down when presented to Disney's Buena Vista way back. Then repeat process.

Like Dan, I really enjoyed this one. I do agree with some of the criticism, mostly in that they could have foreshadowed the shadow organization in some way, so that seeing the clover meant something, but even without that, pretty much everything worked for me.

I agree. The clovers reveal was a real sticking point for me for a while after watching. It was only in retrospect I got that it's like a self contained symbol for the status quo. Just one a of a few reasons I like this movie more for it's ideas than its execution.

I'll settle this once and for all. Unbreakable is NOT a superhero movie, it's a coming of age story with a superhero angle based on identity. Glass is intended to question what was established in Unbreakable. What if you are mistaken about who you thought you were? What if your identity is something else? Yes, Shyamalan rushed the script, and I'm a LITTLE disappointed b/c it could've and should've been better. He was betting on Split being a success, and when it turned out to be one, he made Glass. The drowning in the puddle scene is meant to emphasize an ordinary man's power to take down an extraordinary man, in my opinion. I think Shyamalan would agree. This movie is good, almost great, just like Unbreakable. I remember forcing my friends to watch it with me when Unbreakable first came out. Their response was lackluster. All of them. Except me. That's b/c of the lack of intense fighting scenes & special effects you'd expect in a superhero movie. But it's not a superhero movie. None of them are. Dan, as usual, is correct in his assessment of this film.
