The things about "Feed The Birds" as a song is, as a kid, I too thought it was boring. However, when I grew up and listened to it as an adult, really paying attention to lyrics of it, the song is really beautiful, haunting and *sad.* The song, at its heart, is about people being so busy that even a small act of individual kindness is something you have to make time for. And how many people *don't.* That song, that I thought was boring when I was younger, brings a tear to my eye when I hear it now.

Like most children, I didn’t understand the entire suffragette movement. I assumed that Mrs. Banks went to meetings and protest marches with the other ‘ladies who lunch’. In my opinion, Winnifred Banks kept her advocacy for ‘Votes for Women’ a secret because she hadn’t yet built up the courage to freely admit her true thoughts and opinions to Mr. Banks - but, she gains that courage by the end of the movie, because Mary Poppins became a role model for her. Mary has the confidence to speak her mind and not just defer to men, especially when she disagrees with them. When Winnifred Banks ties her ‘Votes for Women’ ribbon to the kite, I didn’t get the impression that she was quitting; rather, she no longer feels like she needs to hide her sash - literally - in the closet. To show that she doesn’t care who knows, she turns the kite into a flying advertisement for ‘Votes for Women’ - and Mr. Banks does not object to or challenge her on that.

This is a lovely interpretation!
@swanpride
@swanpride 5 жыл бұрын
It's also the correct interpretation. It is pretty clear that Mrs Banks beliefs in the movement, but she also loves her husband too much to challenge him on it. In the end, she no longer things that she has to hide the badges. You would need to make quite a logic jump to interpret it as her giving up on the movement. We know that she has multiple ones of those badges, hanging one of them at a kite where everyone can see it is hardly expressing "I am done with this". If that's what they wanted to say, they would have shown her throwing all badges away, not using one of them as a flying advertisement.

@@swanpride I need to watch this! And now I'm a little disappointed--just a little, I love Screen Junkies and I admire how hard they work to be insightful, funny, and inclusive--in their casual dismissal of feminist interps. of the film as nonsense.
@swanpride
@swanpride 5 жыл бұрын
Well, it is a minor plot point overall, it is just annoying that they misrepresented the role of Mrs. Banks (the point that she is always busy with her movement and therefore doesn't care enough for her children is a good one, though). Her first name is "Winifred" btw...the claim that it is never mentioned is wrong too, Mr. Banks calls her that all the time.

It's funny, I always thought when Mrs Banks ties the "votes for women" banner to the kite it was her way of promoting the cause, and Mr Banks using it as the tail was a subtle way of saying he supported the cause. Great episode!

I think the idea of the way they dealt with the PTSD next-door neighbor was the exaggerated British idea of "keeping a stiff upper lip, and carry on" - dealing with it by repressing and not dealing with it. EDIT - I believe there's an understated acceptance of "eccentricity" in British culture that runs as a sort of counter-culture to the standard stereotype. This sees to be an example of that.

The Suffragette through line is more pertinent in the book. Mrs. Banks' Suffragette "friends" fail to show up to her tea party proving that they aren't really friends at all. We learn that both of the Banks parents are so caught up in being good adults that they have forgotten to be good humans. Their political and economical aspirations are cast off so that they can better take care of the people that really need it.

Grailsarvas They did talk a lot about the constant pressure that Mr. Banks is under to provide for his family. I think the real split is between the classes, rather than the between genders. Most of the working and lower class characters would have probably lived terrible lives, but that is either ignored or their lives are portrayed as happy and carefree despite their circumstances.
@alexwright4930
@alexwright4930 5 жыл бұрын
@Grailsarvas An accurate portrayal of the lives of many domestic servants at the time, or working class women paid less than men for similar work, might have made that point better I guess. Women like Mrs Banks are dependent on their husbands though, who legally had complete control of their children and near complete control of the finances. So, at least if they don't have other wealthy family to rely on, their status is vulnerable and can be dependent on staying married.

If I recall from what I have read about the P.L. Travers and Walt Disney dilemma, she didn't JUST give in to him. She became desperate for money, and allowed Disney to make the movie in order to keep up with her financial demands.
@swanpride
@swanpride 5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. The story about how Walt Disney badgered her and then tricked her is popular, but in reality, she needed the money and Walt Disney was at least in the beginning very ready to work with her, but her demands were impossible. Well, he tricked her on the animated parts. But the main reason why there isn't an outright romance in the movie is because she insisted on there not being one (which was maybe the only good suggestion she made).

Full disclosure: this was one of my favorite movies growing up. It's not that Mr. Banks was supposed to be awful in the beginning. It's that his priorities were a bit out of wack. And Mary Poppins and Bert also taught the children to be more respectful of their father. They made them realize WHY Mr. Banks acts the way he does sometimes and that he does care about them, he just didn't always show it in the most conducive way.

I think that more weird than the movie... is the book.... because: there is a full chapter dedicated to a dancing cow. There is a shop of ginger bread where a lady breaks 2 fingers and gives them to babies - they are made of sugar - and she mistreats her 2 deformed daughters. ... and there is a full chapter dedicated to Mary's birthday party where ... people are in the zoo in cages and we find out that Mary cousin is a snake.... so if you have time... read the book.

The live-action movies of 50s/60s Disney were largely on the Blumhouse/Tyler Perry model, substituting "wholesome family fare" for "horror"/"sassy comedy". They cost very little to make and always made several times their creation cost back. They were bankable low-budget Surefire Successes that kept the studio making money in between the riskier big-event movies every couple of years.

Something like, “Some people can’t see what’s right in front of their noses.” Mr. Banks walks past the “little old bird woman” every day, but doesn’t notice her. He walks past his children every day but doesn’t listen to or help them. It doesn’t make him a bad person, he’s just out of touch with those things that will truly fulfill him emotionally and spiritually.

You'd understand where this movie is coming from much better if you read the book! It's so funny to hear your take on the early Disney live action movies which I grew up with! People really enjoyed them. No weirder than stuff since or current.

Good job with the parody songs, I thought all of them were on-point. Didn't they make Mrs. Banks a suffragette because they didn't think it was believable that the children would need a full-time nanny with a mother who wasn't working or doing anything else with her time? To be fair, I think I only remember this from Saving Mr. Banks, but it seems likely. Also Feed the Birds is a classic, how dare you.

In middle class Victorian and Edwards families, the mother's job was maintaining the household and the children w oiuld ether be in boarding school or have a in house teacher who looked after them

Frankly, it is mostly in the movie because due to a misunderstanding the actress thought she would be playing Mary Poppins. When Walt Disney realized what was going on, he told her, that she should really listen to the great song the Sherman Brothers had written for her character. The Sherman Brother took the hint, and rewrote a song which was originally planned for Mary Poppins in record time. It's still a great scene, though. Otherwise the actress would have been wasted.

It really does. Which is why a more historical movie about its making would have been interesting, too. Saving Mr. Banks left so much out and added so much at the same time. (btw, Walt Disney just handed Travers off to his stuff, he had already enough experience with her at this point that he didn't want to deal with her).

Honestly, I like the stage musical version better. It has a darker tone, but the characters have more of an arc and the parents are way more sympathetic/fleshed out. The mother is a former stage actress who's in over her head, the father is distant and focused on work because of an abusive childhood, and the kids act out a lot at first because of how distant their father is and how their mom is trying to follow what their dad wants/the socially prescribed path for raising a family.

Walt Disney wasn't the hero of Saving Mr Banks and PL Travers was a pretty fleshed out character. That part of the trailer was really off. It wasn't a perfect representation of what happened, but it also wasn't a character assassination of PL Travers either.

@limitedexperience492

It's considered a classic because most of the analysis here is factually incorrect, often betraying a lack of paying attention to what's happening on screen. For the first three facts they get entirely wrong: Mrs. Banks is repeatedly addressed by her first name, offering the suffragette banner for the kite obviously has the opposite intent of what they claim, and her husband agreeing to make that the tail and to fly it in public also obviously has the opposite intent of what they claim. They try to come across as Woke Superiors sneering at something flawed and beneath them, and instead come across as people who shouldn't be analyzing any movies more subtle than blockbuster fare
