Please note that vented hood from the factory (and some after market hoods as well) have water channels and are safe to drive in the rain and go through a car wash, so this is not necessary.

You need a physics teacher and scotty kilmer to tell you which parts shouldnt be touched that way you can make your own drainage system out of hard but bendable metal/alloy while it is secured well without risk of it comming off for any reason or any short amount of time. So complicated when each car is different. You've seen how many idiot worker videos are on youtube? These fckers dont use physics sense.. But some of the obvious things you want to protect are the fuses and battery terminals🤪 just one linear puddle of water between positive and negative is gonna shock that sweet super charged babe that needs all the ice she can get 🥰cuz you know.

Get it vacuumed to your intake, despite the certain risk of overheating, you can tell your friends you avoided any nasty water drops … hahaaa

Great idea! Just ordered 90 ft of 2” painters tape in black. This is a great idea for car washing, and heavy rain storms. I know most modern engines are ok with a bit of water but better safe then sorry. Most people running aftermarket hoods or hoods with modified vents are running modded engines as well so the more you can do to protect it the better. I was leaning towards the Flex Seal tape but that it would be a bit too much for a temporary solution.
@a.andreson98764 жыл бұрын
I started doing this exact method a year ago. It works well but I open my hood and apply the painters tape on the backside of my vents so I dont risk touching the paint at all and the vents are still completely covered. I live in the Pacific Northwest where it rains almost daily.

I also live in the PNW and I have had a hood scoop on my Subaru with no issues but I’m about to install my own hood vents to my Abarth and the rain was the first thing I thought of since it rains all the mf time herr

You really don't have to worry about water in your engine bay at all, all of your components can handle getting wet. Now if you completely submerged your engine bay then you might have issues. Hell I use a pressure washer to clean the engine bays on both of my vehicles, a 2003 Jeep Wrangler and a 2017 WRX STI
@sammyglo53545 жыл бұрын
Dalton Miller not in my case i have two vents towards the bottom of the hood and the way the hood is designed any water that hits the hood it will slide down and the hood will guide the water in the vents so it takes a lot of water, if it rains a lot i get a oil level light and car will mis fire and run horrible till it finally cuts off, and the water dosent even hit the top of the motor where spark plugs and etc are at, it comes in on top of the radiator and front pulleys where the sep belt is, wish i kew how to fix this, thinking too just cover with fiberglass resin on inside of hood, i have a 2003 lexus is300

So i guess theres no real permanent way of going about this? I have a 6.5 turbo diesel and my turbo gets ridiculously hot, also the ventilation and ram air effects help engine temp - not as much as id hoped but it does work somewhat. The vent doesnt have any kind of grille. I had to install cause the new turbo has 4" inlet - 1/2 inch larger than the stock and have no room to run 4" tubing in between the turbo and battery so i used a rubber pvc clamp to put the cdr into and basically putting the filter directly on the turbo facing forward instead of going to the stock pass side vent. Theres a few problems with that. A major one is the alternator is now 3 inches next to filter and a little bit under it. An intercooler over a vent has been suggested to me but then offroading is out of the question cause to work properly they need to be installed sorta under the front bumper. Im not sure what to do but for now im going to try to sheild the alternator and battery from the elements and maybe figure out a grille that doesn't restrict flow. Everything is custom built. Ive looked elsewhere. Some people recommend foam inserts, you with the tape. Its a cylinder type filter, k&n. The filter can get wet, its just not recommended to be used wet. Ive thought about using an angel food cake pan inserted in the hood, inside the scoop and so the water would go to the sides and air in the middle but i fear it would be too restrictive and i would lose the ram air effects.

I have a big camaro hood vent on my yukon denali and it's does just fine. I live in the Seattle area too where we generally get only 3 months of Sun. Water just flows over and around the giant plastic cover on the 6.2 engine. Most engines should be able to have a fair amount of water resistance.

I have had my hood vents on my 2013 Genesis Coupe for 4 years. This is not an issue the amount of water that gets in is not an issue. Don;t worry about it. By the way, the Shark Imports vents, the only ones available for this car are pieces of crap and the owner is a massive a-hole. The composite is fine but the mesh was glued with silicone and it does not hold, the paint started chipping off almost immediately.

I'm trying to think of a way to mount a plate/tray of some type under the vents to allow air in/out but drains the water away. maybe use spacers about 5 mm with sheet metal/aluminium? still on the drawing board..
@trillrifaxegrindor44115 жыл бұрын
with the bolts that go through and mount the vents,add nuts to hold to the hood BUT use 1" longer bolts so you can add another pair of nuts per bolt (3 NUTS ON EACH BOLT,ONE TO HOLD THE VENT AND 2 FOR THE SHIELD)and create a stand off 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch away from the vent.now make the sheet metal or aluminum panel to mount on the stand offs you created to stop the flow of water but allow air in.(spray paint black to hide it) i just envisioned your idea and expanded on it.

Was trying to figure out how to mock up something similar. Had a Honda accord with aftermarket headers and the cheap heat wrap fell apart. Didn't feel like trying to wrap them again because it was real pain and was opting to pick up a spare hood from the junk yard and cut vents into it. Just needed to figure out a way to get the heat out while redirecting water elsewhere. My plan was to build a plastic tunnel against the firewall just below the hood vent with enough space to let heat out and redirect water out under the car.

Yes, there are aftermarket carbon fiber inserts for the gen coupe. You can get them from the normal vendors and they cost about $120-$150. You just remove your heat shield form the hood, then it's 3 10mm bolts on each "vent", then they pop right out. Installation is reverse.

Modifying them is a huge pain and imo not worth the effort vs buying aftermarket ones. They don't do much while driving, but can help slow down heat soak when in stop and go traffic. In a lot of cases they're more of a hassle than it's worth for the benefit you get as you said.
