It’s the same reason antique guns can be bought by anyone in most countries, people aren’t afraid of obsolete calibers because they aren’t being produced just like california isn’t afraid of emissions from cars not being produced, only enthusiasts and collectors are going to be riding around occasionally in their lead chugging death traps :p

This video made me realise the two cars from early childhood that inspire me as a daily drive restomod are my mom’s dad’s 41 Olds in the same fastback body style as your 49 Caddy, and dad’s mom’s 38 LaSalle. Growing up during the war these two family cars marked the stylistic break between the older 30s cars and what were back the contemporary look. The Cord was probably the car that inspired this shift. So for someone my age your 49 Cadillac is more closely related to all those cars that were made since - the whole 3 decade progression up to the malaise era. The La Salle, from my perspective is a bit old fashioned, and of course the preceding Model A square body style the last ruminant of carriage style coachwork - so to speak. There were plenty of them on the roads during the war as I peeked out from my perch in the front seat of these and other family cars.
