Short for "Super Shock Tip" the Hornady® SST® is designed to deliver tremendous shock on impact while expanding quickly and reliably, particularly at higher velocities. Flat shooting and deadly accurate, it's an ideal bullet for whitetails, as well as most North American game animals from antelope to moose and similar-sized African plains game. The SST® creates a devastatingly large wound channel. Find out more at - www.hornady.com/store/SST-bullets

I use hornady 165 grain SST in 30-06 in my savage axis, never fails. One shot, one down. Sighted in at 100 yards, taken deer at 200 yards with only a one inch drop. With this round i know what i shoot at is going down with one shot.

Flat shooting in my Browning X-Bolt Stalker Long Range 30-06. Shooting the Superformace SST 150 grain I get 3,088 FPS. That's right there with 7mm mag velocities! Turned my 30-06 into a "LIGHT MAGNUM."

I commented on another YT video about the mixed results. One hunter commented that the SST was too terminal in performance and nearly destroyed all the usable meat on one shoulder. Another posted a photo of his buck that was nearly torn in half by the SST. He suggested that he's going back to the Hornady AM 150gr SP that it gives very good performance without the damage to the carcass. I shot a nice solid 8 point with an SST years ago and the bullet passed right through without expansion. This left almost no blood trail to follow. My guide suggested that the bullet didn't expand. We found the buck despite the near lack of a blood trail to follow. When we gutted the buck we could see a simple pass through. He suggested the deer may have been too close for this kind of bullet. He's never seen this with standard SP ammo. I called Hornady and their tech support made the same suggestion. I switched to Hornady AM 150gr SP for the following year. This bullet has great expansion out to nearly 400 yards though in Texas we'd never take a shot that long. The longest I've ever taken the shot was just under 200 yards. I have read where hunters have used the SST ammo with success hunting large mulies and elk. They used the .30-06 150gr without issue and without having to use a heavier bullet. The SP design has bee around at least 83 years with Remington Core-Lokt. Other manufacturers such as Winchester, Hornady and others have had similar standard bullet since then. Its been around that long because it works. I have 15 rounds of the SST .30-06 150gr in the safe. Should I find myself on an elk hunt I'd feel more than well armed with this ammo taking a bull out to 250 yards. For now the SST ammo will sit in the safe until called for duty. The SST is hotter than the standard SP by nearly 200fps. We've been seduced by marketing practices from every manufacturer out there from trucks, scopes, ammo, rifles and cell phones. They are very good. I have to admit I was seduced by the sexy packaging of the SST which is more than an eye grabber than the nearly plain box the American Whitetail ammo comes in. The Hornady AM is my go to ammo for all my whitetail hunting needs. Its nice to finally have a perfect combo of rifle/scope/ammo that works for me so I can focus on planning my next hunt instead of obsessing about the latest caliber; 6.8 Western, 6.5 PRC, 6.5 CM and should I upgrade and blow another wad of money. Having worked at my LGS I've seen guys upgrade every time a pretty girl comes along and they have yet to become proficient with the rifle/scope/ammo combo they already have. Manufacturers need new products coming out to keep sales consistent. I pity the guy who feels he needs to upgrade rifle/scope/caliber every year. The amount of money needlessly spend on equipment could have helped buy incredible hunts; Elk, moose, bear, geese, duck as well as fresh and saltwater fishing. You cannot do that if the average hunter is blowing his bonus every year on needless upgrades.

ive actually seen better performance with the GMX (all copper.... now replaced by the SX) than the SST...... in my 308 . it was ALL!! i could buy at the time..... usually get "lower performance" american whitetail hornady.... with a normal bonded soft point but i got a box of superformance SST and superformance GMX...... . and it SURE seemed like the GMX all copper was doing more damage..... dropping more deer VS a 10 to 100 yard run . . . . im not trying to insult you, or make you mad im just saying i was impressed with both bullet types . but that GMX (and hopefully SX that replaced GMX) definitely does a number on BIG!! montana mule skins and whitetail i was skeptical.... but now i trust all copper . id rather some some lead...... but if the Gov't tries to stop hunting by passing "no lead" bills the GMX/SX has us covered . and MIGHT! actually improve!!! terminal performance!!!!

As a recreational shooter, all I use. The 75 gr, Super Performance, .223 is beyond remarkable. In my 7mm mag, 139 gr, Super Performance is beyond impressive! I shot a big bear at 283 yds last fall, knocked him right over. Same round on dozens of whitetails, no tracking. This bullet is also used in my muzzleloader, coupled with 150 grs of Pyrodex. Spot on at two hundred yards, again, no tracking. Plus, I also have it for my 45-70, 250 gr, impressive but I have yet to hunt with that firearm. Hats off to Hornady! 🍀😷🇺🇸🎯👍🦌

After talking with people from Hornady and ready articles the folks in places like Texas where they shot a deer with a regular soft lead bullet and it runs into the nasty brush and even the dogs won't go to find it. The hunters asked the bullet makers to create a bullet that would drop the deer on the spot. At 100 yds. I've had to give up the near side shoulder d/t the nasty dump of energy(black blood). For 250-300 yd. shots on deer, it's perfection. I'm using a 270 with 130 grain.

I dont think the ELD X is bonded. I personally would want a bonded bullet, to handle the velocity of the big 7.

Why? Nobody hunts deer size game with that peeshooter. Most states have a .244 diameter law for deer hunting, and that could be a good reason they are'nt made in that tiny caliber of .224

The SST should mean Super Shattering Tip. These bullets have a nasty tendency to break apart in an explosive manner.

@@cosmicbro1973 I've only killed one deer with them from a 270 140gr SST baseball sized entry hole and total destruction of the lungs. The bullet definitely does not take high velosity impacts. I now shoot the American whitetail rounds with the interlock bullet.

@F15ElectricEagle
@F15ElectricEagle 3 жыл бұрын
@@cosmicbro1973 - It depends. It has been my experience that the SST, in 308 cal and 6.5MM which I shoot, have a tendency to expand explosively when shot from high velocity cartridges such as 300 WM, 300 RUM and 6.5-284 NM. This is especially the case if the bullet hits a fluid rich area of a game such as the chest or upper abdominal area. If you are doing pest controls such as shooting feral pigs and have no other use for the game then the SST is just as good as any other brand of hunting bullet. But if you're hunting for meat or trophy try another brand. The SST sometime turns the meat of the game into a bloody hamurgerized mess and leave a large exit hole in the game's pelts sometime surrounded by smaller holes created by bullet fragments.

In 6.5 grendel and creedmoor these bullets ricochet off bones and can tonally miss all vitals. I'd like to see a soft point for these rounds.

This is the type of bullet that fails to break bones and continue to penetrate. It's like a core lokt with a little plastic tip on it. Cup and core is not the way to go.

You don't know what you are talking about. These bullets and corelokts do exactly what they were developed to do, they do great on thin skinned game just like the video said. But don't shoot them at elk at 3400fps and you will be fine.

Noticed the tips of the bullets in my magazine deformed from the recoil aswell. Gonna look at the Federal Premium Trophy Bonded bullet next.

the SST is good....... but the GMX might!! be better (now replaced by SX.... but the SX is a bit different) . i was VERY skeptical of all copper bullets..... but it was the ONLY box of 308 on the shelf fully expected to have to track and "follow up shot" deer . instead.... it dropped every single one in its tracks something that ive not seen with Federal SP and Hornady SST/inter-bond . . . idk.... this all copper thing might have something to it theoretically easier to make accurate (as its all 1 metal..... VS having to align the jacket PERFECTLY to the lead core) . i still like my lead bullets..... but if bills get passed that require non-lead...... the all copper stuff MIGHT!!! actually perform better!!!

I've shot 2 deer with my 7mm rem mag, the first was with barnes ttsx and it needled through and the buck didn't even flinch, my brother dropped it with his 30-06 using sst. Then my cousin used it to shoot his buck using federal blue box, hit the buck right behind the shoulder and it jumped and walked off before he could get another shot. No blood trail or nothing, we found him dead about 250 yards or more dead. So I started using the sst and it just drops them.
