I've been into weird horror for a number of years now, and yet this was my first time hearing both "The People of the Pit" and "Return to the Sabbath" and they both blew me away. Great discovery, and it almost goes without mention that the narration is superb.

Once again, brilliant readings. The narration in 'Return to the Sabbath' reminds me at times of the great Richard Burton in 'War of the Worlds'... which as a Welsh woman is possibly the greatest compliment I could pay!!

The People of the Pit is one of those great proto-Lovecraftian tales. If it was written a decade or so later it would've been impossible to think of it as not being directly influenced by Lovecraft.
@JAZZHOBO5 жыл бұрын
Oh Yes! I Love it!

The People of the Pit was my favourite. If the author had not been named, I would have thought that Howard was the author. For sheer horror, though, Clark Ashton Smith is the most consistently effective of the Lovecraft-Howard-Smith trio.

Great as usual! I have an unrelated question... I was looking for the reading of Skull-face by Robert E Howard, which I really enjoyed when it came out a few weeks ago, but I can't find it. Did it get a copyright strike?
@HorrorBabble5 жыл бұрын
Hi Fabian - you can listen to it here: horrorbabble.bandcamp.com/album/skull-face-and-other-weird-tales Certain readings were, and possibly still are, problematic. Much easier to host such readings on Bandcamp only.

Remarkable that the poor "doctor" in the first story by Lovecraft doesn't just move to Alaska. Survival ensured by just stepping outside. Oh well, for Lovecraft New York is a place of true horrors always... Oh yeah. And I think the African Americans in the story of voodoo did the right thing. After "caning" an older servant (mother of a grown woman) for protecting her daughter, repeatedly... REVENGE!
@blixten2928 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I'm all for the voodoo-daughter. GOOD WORK!

Anyone notice that these old stories are often prophetic? Calling wars, Hollywood secret societies (when they were still secret), race relations, etc. Pretty good for horror fiction.

Always forget how horrifying “People of the Pit” is. Though it’s clearly influenced by Lovecraft-much different. Not as well written as most of Lovecraft, but more humane. You can feel more for the crawling man than most weird tales characters. All the more upsetting.
