@@frankunodostres473 it's less whether they "deserve it" or not, but rather the hate Spiritbox gets from unwashed weirdos online is beyond ridiculous and 11/10 times reeks of "how DARES this band get popular", as if any band chooses to get popular on any level.

Great video. Two takes that I have that I'm not sure if they're considered hot or not are: 1. Most subgenres nowadays are pointless. If only two bands fall into your "genre" you just wanna feel special. 2. I agree with Austin Nu Metals the sh*t and I feel it gets a lot of unfair hate since a lot of people hate on the bad bands and attribute the good bands to other genres.

I only disagree with the first point because we have the term ‘microgenre’ to cover styles only involving a small number of bands. I think it’s cool to have those labels as a way for those bands to distinguish themselves and give their cult followings something to talk about, but I do agree that these genre labels are really redundant in terms of musical taxonomy.

My "Hot Metal Take" is that metalheads care way too much about subgenres and microgenres and only makes the music less appealing to people, because no one will want to get into anything if the first thing they see is a chart, and those differences boil down to aesthetics and presentation.

As someone that was an adult before Nu-Metal existed there's something never really mentioned in these discussions on it. Nu-Metal is a label, not a genre. In no world should it be true that Slipknot is the same 'sub-genre' as Lincoln Park. It was a label being put on bands that metal gatekeepers used to say "I don't like this" and then over time it came to mean any group that became publicly popular (playing on MTV, attending award shows, etc.) between 96 and 2005 (or so). It's a 'generation' time-based label for anything people saw a selling out or gimmicky or 'for the kids' or 'not real metal' in that era. That era of metal community was probably the most extreme gatekeeping I've lived through. same era that 'kvlt', 'not REAL metal', 'grunge isn't metal', 'is hair metal REAL metal or pop rock?', etc. That shit was EVERYWHERE. Lots of bands got tossed in there just because they got those big radio/tv plays regardless of what type of music they actually played.

I understand what you're trying to say But nah, you're wrong. Nu Metal is basically any metal or vaguely metal band that shows heavy industrial and rap influences. Korn, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Static X, Tallah, Limp Bizkit, etc.

Yeah as a mainly metal guitarist myself… it’s really sad to me that a lot of bands see the bass as just an “afterthought” or “eh just play the root note and hire someone to play it live for us”. The bass is such a cool instrument and needs more recognition in modern metal, more bands should take influence from primus or something

The whole "more gatekeepers are needed" is... relatable, but not for metal. A lot of good things, especially in the video game space, are ruined by sudden mainstream popularity and the creators of the things trying to cater to the new fans that don't fucking know the thing well at all and expect it to be a certain way that it historically is not, while saying it shouldn't be the way that is literally the reason much of the core fanbase likes it. Games like Monster Hunter and basically the entire soulslike genre are a lot like this

The reason nu metal is more "respected" now is simply because a lot of people in their 30's now (the gatekeeper crowd) are the people who grew up listening to it. Bands like Korn and Slipknot were fucking despised by the metal scene in the late 90's/early 00's. The same thing happened with like pop punk/skate punk - if you thought Nofx was "real" punk in the 90's, you were immediately labeled a poser, now Fat Mike is literally the curator of the museum of punk.

i think selling out IS a thing, but i think elitists are quick to say that a band changing their sound is always selling out, even when bands are just changing things up for creative reasons. one example that comes quick to mind is Avenged Sevenfold, they started off really Metalcore and then after several albums started to do different sounding albums, which caused the elite Metalcore fans to be like "you sold out! pandering to the normies!" and that was all before their latest album which while i personally dont dig it, i respect them exercizing their creative freedom.

@@DragonTigerBossYeah but that same grace and direction definitely is not present past that era between metal core avenged and modern avenged. I wouldn't say they "sold out" but they did heavily adapt their sound to suit modern audiences and not purely for artistic reasons, Hail to the King in particular felt hella cheap. The Stage also felt pretty weak for being lauded as "progressive", I guess it is by avengeds standards, but I haven't heard the latest album so I can't speculate too much about this current cycle, I just remember being really let down after Self Titled and Nightmare.

There’s a reason nü-Metal has aged so well. It’s the most adaptable and accessible metal subgenre out there. It’s fucking awesome and there’s so much you can do with it

Mid-to late 2000 metalcore is like The Fall of Ideals by all that remains. That’s top notch metal compared to todays metalcore.

The thing about mainstream artists doing less popular genres is i think it depends on whether the artists make their new non-mainstream projects good or bad. An example of a good switch is Lil Yachty's new psychedelic rock album. That album is now considered his best work yet by many people, and Yachty is a rapper! An example of a bad switch is MGK going into pop punk. He got clowned on even more than he was during his rapper days.

Realiatically though, look at Polyphia and the intricacy of what you can achieve when every member of a band cares about their instrument's input to a song

100% right regarding the "one man band" takes. Most bands have 1 or 2 writers and that's it. I was in various metalcore bands for almost a decade throughout the late 2000s/early 2010s. I wrote 95% of the instruments and the vocalist did his thing. Another good point mentioned is technology now. In mid 2000s the extent of tech was writing out songs on guitar pro and then trying to record it with a useless line6 guitar pod into Audacity. (There was better tech - but even 10 years ago it was simply out of reach for the average younger person). These days recording software/plug-ins are really accessible and KZbin can do a decent job educating people now. Pretty much all "home recordings" in the 2000s Era would be considered hot garbage these days. I have recordings of a band I was in, in the late 2000s - that we paid (at the time) a good chunk of money for in a real studio - that sound worse than stuff I record now on my laptop. In the early 2000s learning guitar I had to find random sites and print out tabs (that were usually wrong) and go with it 😅. Forget about KZbin and various learning apps.
