The part where Lloyd Bridges is SCUBA diving and doing a voice over is an homage to one of his early TV roles (he did many movie beforehand) in a show called "Sea Hunt" (1958-1961) in which he played a SCUBA diver who would have an underwater adventure each week and would narrate in voice overs.

Make sure you do see the Godfather movies, Goodfellas, and Casino before you watch Mafia!. That movie is hilarious but is useless to watch without seeing those other movies first. There are other movie references in the movie, but not as important. I actually saw Hot Shots, Part Deux AND Robin Hood: Men in Tights at the theater on the same day.
