Can we take a second to appreciate what a great actor Hugh Laurie is. One of the best to ever grace television
@jonnywishbone95162 жыл бұрын
Quite likely that nobody will ever see this comment, but whilst the story that one of the producers saw Laurie's casting tape and assumed he was American because of the fidelity of his accent is well known, if you're American I recommend to you Blackadder and specifically Blackadder Goes Fourth. It is a near 4 decade old comedy series and is absolutely nothing like any American sitcom ever made; it stars Mr Bean before he developed brain damage as well as Laurie in a role you will find completely unrecognisable if you only know him from House. The last episode of the fourth series is also quite simply one of the most magnificent pieces of bittersweet comedy ever made.

@@timothyhartanto I guess I'll be the one to not mince words: It got so much worse, in every conceivable respect. Like...there are parts of this season, at least, that actually kind of work really well. It's different - not necessarily worse, but it clearly had different priorities and they were clearly experimenting in a way that works some times and doesn't at others. I was personally a huge fan of this show as a kid and gave up on it during Season Six, only picking it up again in like 2019. The end of Season Seven...well, the comment you're replying to is a spoiler. That's how the season ends - with House driving a car through Cuddy's home. That's how one of the main characters was written out of the show, the end to one of the show's major narrative arcs; the main character, that lovable badboy we're all supposed to like despite being an asshole, backtracking on all of his character development, and behaving like a teenage incel by lashing out violently in response to rejection. If you look around, you can still find contemporary reviews from the early internet...having actually seen maybe thirty of those early media blogs state that they would no longer be reviewing any episodes of House going forward because there was no point, as their review of that episode, is a big part of why I feel confident enough to say that, no, it was objectively a disaster. Some went into more depth about exactly how the writers had reached this point and why it was stupid; some just abruptly Stopped.

I appreciate "Broken". If only for how [relatively] realistic the madhouse is portrayed. Mine was less luxurious but the important part, how House feels there, is shown almost flawlessly. First, he lusts for freedom, then understands that the more he resists the longer is his stay, which is the cornerstone of being admitted. The phases he goes through there - I know them too well. And his conversations with the doc are very authentic. Also, he didn't have to learn that mental illnesses are very real the hard way, but it worked dramatically, it was a shocking lesson for the audience. Which, certainly, didn't make everyone happy since a good portion of people can't empathize and still thinks that a sick mind can be cured with a walk in the park, optimism, and some labour. Can't say I blame them, it's hard to imagine unless you're sick yourself or have sick relatives. The creators did their research, captured the feel of it all. And you did a great job dissecting it.

I'm not embarrassed to say that as an aimless young adult, I modeled myself after House. It didn't win me more friends (nothing had before anyway), but I liked it. More importantly, I liked myself. As I grew older, I recognized there were a lot of problems with basing your personality after a fictional character, especially one who is as toxic as House, so I changed and I grew up some more. But the core of that person, the relentless pursuit of truth, the refusal to let stupidity win, the irreverence in the face of defeat, and the ability to let go of pain and move on, that has been the best parts of me. And I learned that from this series. Thanks for this analysis. Hope to see the rest of it soon.

@@Zsooltt House lacks a lot of self-awareness in his actions and though he maybe reasonable to a certain extent his actions hurt the people around him. His redeeming quality is that he is good at solving puzzles. But it's arguable if he is a good doctor or not because in real life doctors treat patients and it's not always about solving puzzles. House has plot armor and the people close to him give him a million chances. In our own lives if you are hurting some one else they have no obligation to help or stay. But we inevitably have to find some one to support us unless you are one of those true introverts who doesn't need any one at all and don't feel lonely/depressed(which im not quite convinced exists). We have to learn self awareness so that we aren't being shitty to other people with out knowing it, and if we knew we were being inadequate we have to consider how to to make amends. House may not always be wrong but we are wrong all the time and it's hard to admit. This is a smidge rambley but I hope you can understand.

I was convinced the only thing that gave me any shred of worth was my smarts and talents, and those things exclusively. I was also quite uncool, and never able to show off my quick wit when it mattered. I had the need to be liked by everyone. The way House pathologically pushed people away might have been toxic and unhealthy, but 15-year old me wished to have even a smidge of that confidence. House was the opposite of my uncool self, while also being super smart, and thus incredibly cool to me. Aspirational, in a lot of aspects. I had a very tough time in school and thinking back I think I was quite depressed and burned out. I clung to everything that might bring me some relief - so when I saw House cutting himself during the Tritter arc to get some relief from his pain... yep, 15-year old me decided that might be a good idea. I might have been very smart, but damn, I was dumb 😂 Well, I was going through some shit, but still. I also internalized some of house's toxic thought patterns, as the aforementioned feeling of being worthless without the special skill one has that sets one apart from others. I wish I had just gone to therapy. 😂 But house (the show) is also just very compelling. Incredibly so. The characters and relationships on that show are fascinating to me, to the extent that I spent the following years reading tons of fanfiction. That gave me some much needed relief from my real life at the time. Looking back at all that, I'm just really glad that that time is over and I'm flourishing at university and have found confidence and the knowledge that worth is inherent, and also friends who love and accept me. I'm very sorry to 15-year old me. I would have been very different had I not watched house at that age, but I can't say if for the worse or better. @@solarydays maybe i wasn't clear, i watched it recently as an adult and quit along the way.. i couldn't bring myself to sympathize with him, and he is not as smart as i used to think he was as a kid. openly risking patient care and treatment again and again and getting away with it.. come on, the very definition of plot amour cuddy and wilson are grown ass adults. house did not pick them they picked him too and kept indulging him why.. because plot amour. they kept saying he was saving lives.. what lives? firemen and nurses save way more lives than he ever did.. plot amour. he was losing a lot of money for the hospital.. plot amour. there are laws, rules and responsibilities in the real world(house m.d. world). why a rational adult will put up with his shit and break the law.. chase, cameron and foreman were not that desperate enough.. its not like he owned the hospital, he was a mere employee.. again plot amour the series is just too ridiculous, it doesn't hold up within its own universe. being edgy or a narcissistic piece of shit who acts like a petulant child with a lot of plot amour wast compelling t.v. enough for me. don't get me wrong i loved house as a kid but i also loved barney the purple dinosaur.. Man I love this show. I discovered it in my early 20's around when season 3 was airing on TV. I remember going to Blockbuster(remember those kids!?) and renting the season 1 & 2 dvd's and binging them. I did watch the show to the end, but I never bought any of the dvd's past season 6 because that was the end of the show for me as well. For a couple of years I had to deal with a ruptured disc in my back that pressed on my sciatic nerve and made me limp. I went as House for two Halloweens in a row and still have the flame cane. I would pop advil like vicodin.

During its heyday, I was an occasional viewer of House, basically I was a kid, my dad liked it and sometimes I'd catch an episode or two when he watched it. House's character has always fascinated me and stuck with me over the years, but that's about as far as it goes. Some time ago, I encountered this series. Watched it, loved it, felt your passion and honesty, the type you can only feel for something perfectly imperfect, deeply personal. Hey man, I know I don’t know you; however I genuinely would like to say I’m proud of you for coming through with such a solid breakdown for one of my all-time favorite t.v. shows, created. I’ve already watched Part(s) 1 & 2. No lie, I just rewatched both, hahaha. I say proud, also in-part; because although they are in fact dense (as you stated) I don’t think you wasted the minutes utilized on these. Nor did it lose my attention all throughout. Also, it reminds me of the importance of consistency when it comes to remaining/staying active, especially during seasons such as these. You never know how much these might help someone! It tripped me out; because in times past, i eventually exhausted my searching efforts seeking out more House material. The difference with yours, is that you followed through on a spark/thought. The consistency paid off. Because the passion shines through! You did a great job ensuring that you’re not overdoing the voice-overs, tonality wise. Artist to artist, you did a great job, man! I’m glad that you followed through with all of the synopsis’ information given to us, so intricate. Never forget, that you’re just as important of an Artist, as the Director’s of this series were. Feel free to check out my works sometime, as well. And, even if you don’t; I’m still going to stay/remain subscribed - for sure, brother! God bless!! 🙏🏾 /// m.soundcloud.com/jeremeetyler

Wow! Thanks, Jesse Tribble for this amazing video essay. Some things that I noticed when I watched House, is how the side characters, the guest actors, and the extra characters compliment and/or challenge House into becoming a worse version or a better version of himself. An example that I can think of is S6, EP11 *Remorse* or The Psychopath when Doctor House tells her just to stop and tell them the truth and that little snip its gold! She turns into the real her. And it always gives some chills seeing her performance. And the way that House enjoys how complex she is and she becomes a puzzle he needs to read or solve. I love it! I'm so excited to continue the six-part video essay.
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth15024 жыл бұрын
I can understand the point that show after this point is significantly more flawed than before, but there is still so much great stuff after broken that i struggle to understand the argument that you should stop after it. Even season 8 (which is mostly kinda eh) still has a few great episodes, a great character arc for chase and the last 4 episides leading up to the finale have some of the best material of the whole show (not that the finale is bad, it sends the show off on a good note, its just not that high tier by the shows standards)
@mitchellhorton93824 жыл бұрын
Most shows still have good moments and arcs after they tip downward; it's about the consistency and the build up of the narrative. Things hit a peak around Broken after House's flaws pend *years* building up; he keeps dodging accountability of increasing magnitude with each antagonist he faces. Finally in Broken he has to face his true foe; himself. After that it's like an epilogue; sometimes fun, sometimes touching, and in a lot of ways narratively satisfying but it isn't going anywhere emotionally.

Love this video! House is my favorite series as well (just *_barely_* above Breaking Bad haha). When you were discussing House causing trouble to get his way in Mayfield, it's a common misconception that that is called negative reinforcement. In psychology, there are 2 main ways of altering behavior: reinforcement and punishment, along with their respective positive and negative forms. Positive means that something is being added to the situation to alter behavior, while negative means something is being taken away. Positive reinforcement means a desirable stimulus is added to reinforce a behavior, while negative reinforcement means something aversive is taken away. Positive punishment is when an aversive stimulus is added to discourage a behavior, while negative punishment is the removal of a desirable stimulus to discourage a behavior. Since House is doing things that others do not like to achieve his goal (and modify the staff's behavior), he is using positive punishment! Many people think positive and negative refer to the action being done by the observer, when in fact it merely refers to the addition or subtraction of a stimulus. Can't wait to watch the rest of this series you made!
