I don't think it's necessarily embarrassment that's stopping Alicent from backing down, I think Alicent genuinely believes she don't have the power or authority now to stop it, the wheel is turning too fast to stop and the situation has ascended beyond anyone's control. Besides the Greens were gonna crown Aegon regardless of Alicent's wishes and whether Viserys changed his mind or not, Otto had been planning this for years now.
@soulofconflict6 ай бұрын
Exactly. She's trying to control a bunch of bloodthirsty manchildren and failing. It's basically the Joffrey situation all over again but with a lot less needless sadism and psychopathy. Not saying their anger is completely unjustified but they're so shortsighted it hurts lol.

@@soulofconflict unjustified in its genesis. The thought that Rhaenyra would kill Alicent’s kids was false premise. Otto being scared of Daemon, then Rhaenyra led to this. Of course now with blood and cheese, different game
@rexibhazoboa70976 ай бұрын
@@LaCheeserie False premises? No. While Rheanyra herself might not have wanted Alicents kids dead, her council - especially Daemon - would push for it, even to the point of doing it behind her back. Otto was smart to be worried about Daemon and he did see that Rheanyra was close with him, adding to the fact that Rheanyra doesn't heed Otto's advice . He knew he had to get her out. But he still tried to marry her to Aegon which would have solved his issue by keeping Daemon away. But Viserys said no which finalised Otto's goal of getting rid of Rheanyra.
@corvus25126 ай бұрын
I don’t understand what Rhaenyra means when she says ‘if war can be averted it’s my duty to’….. how can it be averted? There are only 2 ways for the war to be stopped, Rhaenyra renounces her claim as Queen or Aegon steps down as king, either decision rendered the death of one of their children meaningless. Do we think either would seriously consider stepping down? The show keeps saying war could be averted if it weren’t for those evil men around Rhaenyra and Alicent, yet they started the war. What concrete 3rd path exists to avoid war? The writing worries me with this show
@bRianizzle6 ай бұрын
@@corvus2512 You're viewing/thinking about all of this as a third person seeing all story lines. You're not letting yourself view through each characters eyes/knowledge/beliefs. When they speak of averting the war, they believe it. Rhaenyra doesn't know how little power Alicent has anymore, she doesn't know what kind of vengeful/reckless character King Aegon has become, or what the mood/atmosphere/temperament is on the Green side. She hopes to hold onto the last time she saw Alicent at Viserys' final dinner, when they found "peace" between each other. It's not about whether there actually is a path to averting the war or not. We all know this is inevitable because we see each action leading to it on both sides. Each character does not see all we see. When it comes to actual war, if there is any hint of hope of avoiding it, then they will understandably seek it out until they know for themselves that it is truly impossible. We have all the evidence and logic of where this is going, but they don't. Like, if someone edited the series to only show one character's scenes and it was your first time viewing the series, you would have a very different perspective of the whole story.
@Skye_Writer6 ай бұрын
I think you guys misunderstood where Rhaena and the children are going. First, they are all going to the Vale so Joffrey can start his wardship there. Rhaenyra is sending her two youngest children as well and she asked Rhaena to go with them to look after her half-brothers. Now Rhaenyra said to write to the prince in Pentos and *IF* he will take them all in, go there with the younger boys so they are further out of the Greens' reach. So, at the moment, the plan is to go to the Vale, with a possibility of extending the journey to Pentos if the opportunity to do so comes to pass.

Alicent is right that its too late, but that isn't the point of the scene. This conversation strengthens Rhaenera's resolve. She might've been having personal doubts about her claim to the throne, and then she does know Alicent and would know if she's lying, so to hear Alicent be SO sure that Viserys changed his mind is devastating for her. Then to hear the actual words and know her father loved her and remained true to the end and never wanted Aegon to be king, I felt that deep in my soul when she realized that. Now she has the resolve to fight for her inheritance. THAT was the point of that scene. She needed this. I think the biggest thing to come from the final discussion between Alicent and Rhaenyra is that Alicent can no longer justify to herself any of the actions her house takes to keep Aegon on the throne. The beginning of her descent was in the sept with Rhaenyra. It has nothing to do Alicent’s ability to stop the war: it’s about how she will handle the repercussions of it.

People are forgetting that the innevitable war between Greens and Blacks wasn't started because of Viserys 'indecision' about his heir, his council had been plotting to name Aegon king long before Viserys' death, and even though they made it seem as it was Alicent's misunderstanding of Viserys' words what triggered their plan, it actually had little to no relevance as they would've taken the throne regardless of Viserys' intentions. As Rhaenys said: "Men would rather let the world burn than see a woman sit the Iron Throne". Therefore I also think Alicent saying "there's no mistake" isn't she being ashamed of her mistake, but rather she finally realising Viserys' never changed his mind but also knowing that the war would've started regardless, and that there's nothing she or anyone can do to stop it. I love the parallel they do with the conflict between Blackwoods and Brackens: neither of them know why they hate eachother, nor who started it, nor who's right or wrong, they just fight. It's kind of the same between the Greens and the Blacks, it no longer matters who's right, who's wrong, who started it, who continued it, war between the two is innevitable. Alicent realised this, it's too late to stop the war, so that conversation was just the last goodbye between two women who were once best friends.

To offer a different perspective on the whole Aegon naming thing.... When Viserys died, only Aegon II and Aegon III (Rhaenyra and Daemon's son) are alive. So, while it can be somewhat of a reach, I don't think it's inconceivable that when Alicent heard Viserys' dying words, she understands it as "Aegon, the prince that was promised" as her son, because everybody thought about it as "It's either Rhaenyra or Aegon" . And all of it kind of doesn't matter anyway, since Otto and the council were already planning to usurp the throne even without Alicent coming in with the whole "Viserys changed his mind" thing.

You have to consider that they font have the same information as us. Rhaenyra is in control in Dragonstone, her word had weight and if she asks her sons or her step-daughters to do something they follow along. So Rhaenyra having barely seen Alicent since her kids have grown up assumes that Alicent has the same control on her side. That might be naive of her, but I think Rhaenyra sees Alicent has a woman who is highly manipulative (from her pov she managed to steal her father from her just to get her kids on the throne). So of course Rhae believs if she could simply make Alicent agree with her the war is over. They both can simply tell their kids and vessels to stand down. Additionally I think a part of Rhae’s hesitation has been the story of uniting the realm, and a lingering doubt that maybe Viserys meant for Aegon to take the throne after all, and if she were to fight him she would tear the realm apart and it might lead to the goal of the Conqueror being ruined, but now she knows/believes Viserys fully wished for Rhae to take the throne and that its her destiny to keep the realm strong and prepared

BOOK SPOILERS . . . . I’m calling it now: Alicent is going to be the one who poisons Aegon in his carriage and brings the Dance to an end. Now that she knows the truth, she’s going to feel personally responsible for each death that is to come, as well as for the monster her son turned into, and killing him and bringing an end to the violence is going to be her way of atoning for her part in the Dance and will bring her and Rhaenyra’s story full circle.

Where do people get the notion that Cristen banging Alicent is known? Fuck, Aegon would have made his buds spill shit out and killed Cristen because AND possibly imprison his mother after hearing what Larys told him. Remember Robb getting really pissed at his mom for letting Jamie go? Only Larys knows about Criston/Alicent situation and he has that card to play whenever he choses.

There was no mistake. She spent 16 years raising her children to hate Rhaenyra and telling Aegon he would die if she became queen. Spreading rumors, creating a hostile environment between the kids. She knew what she was doing. She was the one who asked Larys to get rid of his father so Otto could come back as Hand. She arranged the petition against Luke. So no, random words Viserys said that she was aware could mean someone else (their drunk ass son the prince to save all from the dark and cold?), meant nothing. Not only had she done plenty to ensure usurpation, but her father began the plan the minute Aemma died and he suggested Rhaenyra as heir over Aegon. The problem was that Viserys kept Rhaenyra as heir once he got a son. So no, it was no mistake. Alicent uses it to justify to herself she did the right thing.

Yes! That is one important fact, that people *definitely* overlook - Aegon became King because of Otto and the small council's plans, not because of Alicent's half-overheard prophecy. 👈😉

exactly
@radishmiri31376 ай бұрын
When did she do most of these things? She never told her kids to hate Rhaenyra, she loves her. She tried to raise her kids the best she could but she can't control them because she has no power, most of the bad things that happened, were because of the kids by their own, Alicent had nothing to do with it. I don't undersatnd why is all the blame put on Alicent where the worse thing she did was misunderstanding that when her husband before dying said that Aegon would be the king, she understood that it was Aegon, their son. She didn't even want Aegon to be the king in the first place, she always knew and said Rhaenyra would be the best option but she had to leave this behind to accomplish her dead husband's wish.

The war really started when Viserys married Alicent. Irregardless of the misunderstanding Otto was planning to usurp Rheanyra the moment Aegon was born. And to be honest, it would be the same if Viserys married any other lady and had a son, because men would rather have the realm burn than have a woman on the throne.
@bluefayery316 ай бұрын
Alicent heard what she wanted to hear the night Viserys died. She wanted the position and just heard the name aegon, and immediately thinks that Viserys wants her son to be the successor. All Visery's life he always said that Rhaenyra is his heir to the throne and defended her every time. Even the morning before he died, he didnt want to take the milk of the poppy so he could have a clear mind, walk to the throne felt and go through all that pain just to defend luke as the heir to driftmark to further affirm Rhaeinyra's inheritance and then Alicent The Hypocrite thinks Viserys suddenly changes his mind the same night. Alicent thinks her son aegon the rapist is The Prince that was Promised?? Dafuq!

3 things of note: 1) The idea that Alicent now knows (or at least has doubt) that Aegon wasn't her late husbands true wished heir is something I didn't know was going to be possible. 2) Those eggs that are being sent to Pentos are the ones which eventually become Daenerys' in game of thrones. 3) Aemond says that Lord Sam well Blackwood was slain in the battle we didn't see, so does that mean that the young boy we saw in season 1, Wilhelm, is the new Lord Blackwood? (it's such a cool name... "I am Lord Blackwood, of Raventree Hall")
@josephagundez53366 ай бұрын
I thought Rhaenyra sneaking into King's Landing was a little silly, but at the end it was justified because it was proof that events had escelated to the point where there is no going back. Queen Alicent being firmly in denial even when Rhaenyra gave her an opportunity to try and sue for peace, Alicent still didn't take it. Rhaenyra sitting alone quietly was her affirmation that the gloves can finally come off and Westeros will know what it's like when dragons go to war.

While I get what they were going for with that final scene - giving Rhaenyra closure so she understands there really is no other way but war - I kind of felt like we should have been there already (the final shot of S1 suggested she was already ready to go to war). It just felt a bit forced to me, like they wanted a reason to get those 2 actresses in a scene together again. That said, I do think some people criticize it for the wrong reasons. Like, I saw one KZbinr say it made no sense that Rhaenyra didn't try to kill Alicent, and even said that he lost all interest in where things go from here, because Rhaenyra "could have ended the war right here." It just felt like he wasn't paying attention at all. Not only would killing Alicent not have ended anything, it would have just added more fuel to the Greens' fire.

I'm not going to defend Alicent for all that has happened. It was fucking stupid that she interpreted Viserys wanting Aegon to be king when he was high as all hells off milk of the poppy, and she was at least partly hearing what she wanted to hear there... but ultimately I doubt anything would have changed. Otto had already convinced the council to support Aegon anyway. Cut to present day, there is again nothing that Alicent could do, even if she admitted to her mistake. The Greens aren't going to stand down because Alicent admits to messing up. Aegon would be like "No, fuck you. I didn't even want to be king anyway. You forced me, remember? I'm not backing down now."

*Fans saw the opening scene with Blackwoods & Brackens taking everybody's lives & leaving no winners & were like "anyway! When are the main characters gonna start killing each other??"* Starting by showing the human cost of war should’ve been enough to grasp why a peaceful solution should be sought after to the extreme...& yet. Multiple characters all thru the episode comment on how cyclical violence begets violence & perception of blame is manipulated. Like Lord Simon says "the reason is lost to time". Rhaenyra wears Jaehaerys the Conciliator's crown: Rhaenys is literally spoonfeeding the theme in a way GoT never bothered to do! If GoT came out today ppl would be crying about Tyrion giving Cat Ned's bones & trying to negotiate Jamie for the girls! “Why they still trying to prevent a war & seek peace!! Bad writing!" All of GoT s2 would be considered filler! Ofc the Sept meeting didn't make sense to Targ stans, Daemyra shippers & "I want Aegon vs Rhaenyra war movie" Greens. Cause they're so adamant in not understanding the focal point of this adaptation : Rhaenyra & Alicent being torn apart by feudal patriarchy. That despite everything, they still care for & value each other. You don’t even have to perceive their love as romantic. But outright denial, letting your prejudices dumb you down & make you refuse to even engage with what the story has made abundantly clear is wild!The complain about logistics is hypocritical as Daemon goes to KL in ep1. Daemon is a man so when he does crazy things it’s awesome & cool! But Rhaenyra goes off the deep end & it's weak, passive & dumb! "What happened to her rage?" A six year old child was murdered in her command. God forbid she goes thru internal conflict after that. Or think of Alicent's arc as a man : *"a boy who was raised to always do his duty no matter how high the price; has a moment where he mistakenly believes all his sacrifice might've been worth it for the realm, then slowly realizes there's too much blood on his hands to stop." Ppl would be obsessed.* But a complex female character gets "she's so dumb" or "she's a b word". *Alicent didn’t place Aegon on the throne cause she misunderstood the prophecy; the prophecy simply gave her an acceptable justification for doing what she had to do. It was a tool of self-deception. Which was made clear when Alicent brilliantly used the "I swear on my mother" line which Rhaenyra used as a lie in s1.* Alicent’s wants were of no relevance. *Aegon would've been placed on the throne with or without her support. Her placing him there just granted her a degree of influence over him.* Hotd acknowledging men's violence isn't "gender essentialism". These men are violent cause they were taught that they have the right to be. Nothing sexist about the two female characters pondering the reality of a brutal war as they've been subjected to this everyday violence the most. "But Alicent & Rhaenyra's kids should come before their love". Exactly...they have the most at stake. Have you considered the best way to protect their kids is to stop killing each other? The kids are already dying. Aegon is about to be disfigured & paralyzed. Ofc Alicent would want to do anything she can to stop this. But she is destined to fail. Which is the tragedy. Many women tend to be in denial about the harshly realistic portrayal of Alicent & Rhaenyra's every walking moment being a struggle against misogyny (like Rhaenyra's sexist council) cause they have the girlboss fantasy of how they would've "done things differently" if put in these type situations.
