Its weird to me how Amazon has spent way more on their Lord of the Rings show than what HBO has spent on this new GoT show, yet GoT looks ten times better. The sets look better, the armor looks way better, the outfits look better and I could go on & on. So Amazon spends way more but their show looks way worse. Weird.

That’s because GOT was filmed in the UK where they have some of the best people and facilities in the industry. Rings of Power was filmed in NZ for purely nostalgic reasons where they are not known for being particularly strong in this field. It’s not their fault as they have a tiny population so it’s harder to produce enough talented designers, technicians etc etc
@Skitdora20102 жыл бұрын
Amazon used to have Amazon studios where they allowed anybody to set up an account and send in their script and ideas at any stage of their thought process for amazon to give it a greenlight, until they had enough cast offs from other media and they then closed off the publics possible talent for people in the lower ends of the media who were not good enough to climb the ladder at those studios. So, the higher ups at amazon studio projects are the door mats at the bottom of the other companies. The other companies knew well not to throw their gambling chips at them.

One thing to note about that "heir for a day" scene, is that they carefully shot it with Otto saying the words, they never showed Daemon saying it, only implied. Otto's sources could have been wrong, or he purposely lied to the king for his own intentions. Daemon was equally ambiguous about it during the confrontation with Viserys and did not confirm or deny saying it. It could just be a coincidence, or I wonder if they have plans to revisit this topic and that he never actually said it.

When you compare the dreary House of the Dragon episode 1 to the first hour of GOT, the difference is shocking: In GOT we learn about the Night's Watch and sinister events beyond the wall; we meet the Starks and see just who they are; The King arrives in Winterfell which turns their lives upside down; Bran inadvertently spies on Jaimie and the Queen and is crippled in his fall; We meet Tyrion Lannister and John Snow and each character is skillfully drawn. In short, fascinating characters, large events, brilliant writing and dialogue. None of which are evident in HOD, which is written on the level of a CBS mini-series. Even the tourney could hardly have been duller (compared to the Hand's tourney early in GOT). It's all about the writing, for me, and I hope it improves but I'm not optimistic.

The melee at the tourie was Damon's fault - he set the tone by acting so dishonourably and it being accepted/rewarded. That'd piss of all of his competitors and they'd all be more inclined to forget the rules too. I partially think the showrunners are "forced" to talk so heavy handed about patriarchy. Because the show is about how two Queens eff up the kingdom, kill nearly all the dragons, and almost end the family. Nothing says feminism better than massive eff ups with massive slaughter, right?

It's all about succession. How nasty it can and has gotten in real history. This story is just as messy as legitimizing bastards becomes. Don't really see this as feminism, even though martin is a self proclaimed feminist, the story so far is the girl was made the heir and will fight for the title she was given by her father and king.

Because every time it happens, a massive war breaks out, then some poor bastard is put on the throne and has to clean up the mess. Not just the shows but the books as well. What do you mean "forced" to talk heavy handed about patriarchy? It's freakin Westeros it has always had patriarchal themes entwined into it. We saw in GoT and we see it in HotD. The whole Targaryen civil war started on the issue of succession, should a woman inherit before a man? There's no escaping the patriarchy issue. This is really not a pro feminism story (Both Rheanyra and Alicent do terrible, horrible things - neither side comes off good). Which makes all the folks who were calling it a "Woke disaster" before anyone saw a single episode look even more silly.

The birthing scene was not realistic for the time, if we are assuming roughly medieval care. With a breech baby she would have been up and moving (hell, with any baby in any position), and using a birthing chair or rope. Breech babies come out like any other baby. The show runners instead decided to put the modern "every breech baby should be a c-section" hospital rules. Did tragic things like cutting the baby out happen sometimes? Yes. But it wouldn't have been for a breech alone.

*Episode* *2* *Spoiler* *Alert* If "Matt Daemon" 😉 and Paddy stole the show in Ep 1, Milly stole it in Ep 2. She does have some traits of Daenerys. She doesn't mind confrontation. I like how she reacts when her father chooses Alicent as his bride be. Milly's reaction was priceless. It's called Rogue Prince but we actually don't see Daemon for more than 30 minutes into the episode. And when we do see him, his scene lasts about 5 minutes. Perhaps the best scene to me was between Rhaenyra and Rhaenys. The acting was superb from both actresses. I think Otto can be pretty savage. He threw some good lines at Daemon. He really hates Daemon. They really are arch rivals. Otto has no hesitation shaming Daemon in front of his brother. "Daemon's WHORE!" I also like how Otto and Alicent didn't really push back on Lord Corlys' daughter. If they did, it would look too obvious from the Hightowers what their ulterior motive is. I think Hot D is easier to follow than GOT because it doesn't jump to too many characters. It's focused on 2-3 characters and that's it. You can see their characters get fleshed out more. Paddy was magnificent in this episode as well. Viserys is a good man. Just not sure he's a great king as he hates confrontation that Daemon loves. While Daemon only wants approval from his brother. He's extremely loyal to his family. His blood relatives at least. You could download Ep 2. Was uploaded a few hours on Piratebay. You can watch the episode at least 12 hours before Pacific time sees it. It's a typically good episode. Usually Game of Thrones saves their best stuff for the 9th episode. Can't peak too early.

It won't even be adressed because the character is not meant to be black in the books. On the other hand skin color wasn't that much of a big deal in the middle ages or antiquity, people discriminated way more based on class or religion than race. In europe some cities even have black people on their heraldry so it seems they weren't seen as a lesser race. Also Westeros already experienced the migration of the andals and they are currently ruled by a dynasty that came from a completely foreign culture, so if that doesn't bother them, race is most likely not an issue either.

In GRRMs world, racism is mainly based on culture and weirdly, hair and eye colour. Not skin colour. The GOT series took out so many characters of colour. For example Tyrion would notice black people in the port cities of Westeros like King Landing. Tommen has a prince (from the Summer Islands) as a guest at court. What I’ve seen so far from HOTD, the reintroduced the concept of the port cities being more diverse than the rest of Westeros.

*The* *Spoils* *of* *War* *(S7E4)* I suggest for people to rewatch Sean TankTops/Burlington Bar's reaction to the final minutes to this episode. I watched it after not seeing it in over 5 years. It was so fun to see all the surprised faces again. It's amazing to watch so many people cheering when they first see Daenerys riding on Drogon but then started to worry if Jaime and Bronn were going to die? I never seen that crowd so glued to the screen and so anxious with divided feelings. That episode used to be my favorite GOT episode. Yes, even over Battle of the Bastards. But over the years, I realized it's similar to Hardhome where it's spectacular the final minutes but that's it. I have it still in my top 5 and higher than fan favs like Castamere and TWOW. The Spoils of War is actually responsible for me subbing to reactors like Sesskasays and Imon Snow while The Rains of Castamere drove my curiosity towards KZbin reactions. I think The Spoils of War might still have the most anxious moments ever seen from GOT. Do they root for Dany and hope Jaime and Bronn escape? In retrospect, I think if Jaime had died in that episode, I don't think it would make a huge impact afterwards because he was essentially useless after his hand got cut off in S3. But he became such a huge fan favorite by S3, we were all rooting for him to live which obviously didn't happen prior to the series finale. It's actually symbolic. Jaime kills The Mad King and his daughter avenges it by Drogon roasting the Kingslayer. But at the time, many of us were panicking if Jaime was going to survive. He carried enough plot armor when he sank underwater. Bronn saved another Lannister brother from dying by pushing him off the horse. I suggest to watch the reactions of Burlington Bar and Imon Snow of this episode. Sesskasays no longer has her's there but it's similar to Imon's. She was screaming for Jaime. They're still fantastic reactions after all these years.

I dont know if people think this is good because they are starved for something that could even marginally pass as "ok" (ref the Mandalorian, which is a mediocre show, but by virtue of being lightyears ahead of anything else Lucasarts / Disney has done, it is perceived as "excellent")... nah.. the bar has been lowered so much that unless its instantly recognized as utter garbage, its hailed as the best thing since sliced bread....bah :)

Paddy Constantine and Matt Smith’s performances were fucking incredible, Emily Carey and Milly Alcock perfectly captured the BFF energy they were going for. Yeah, there were a few stupid scenes, but the fact that you’d look at that birth scene as “Muh misogyny” when the entire show is a commentary about men and women’s roles in a medieval society and how unfair it is shows how little you understand any of it. The Aegon I knowing about the prophecy of the Others and part of the reason he conquered Westeros idea is from GRRM. Condal has confirmed as such and the first time hearing about this was from GRRM a couple years ago when he said it while promoting the release of F&B , though he framed it in a more speculative way. That idea is from GRRM but that reveal adds very little to the Dance of the Dragons conflict and mainly ties HotD into the main series / GoT. Personally do not think it was needed to be included at all or at least not the way they chose to do it. Let this show shape its own identity and why remind and connect HotD to GoT so obviously in E1. Yes the concept is from GRRM but including it how and when they did (E1) is a bit questionable.
@DillsyYourDaddy672 жыл бұрын
I believe the inclusion of it was something that George fully intended for the books but D&D cut it out of the show. I believe this is his way of correcting that wrong. Although it doesn't change GoT ending, I recall a few people saying George has came out and said that Season 5+ started gradually getting further and further from his books story
@AlexBB772 жыл бұрын
@@DillsyYourDaddy67 yes it is from GRRM as i mentioned in my comment , so quite possible we get this reveal in the main series novels or any of the other in-universe books / novellas etc. And yes more and more with his blog and public comments GRRM is distancing himself from the later seasons of GoT. But given HotD's show-runners talking about continuity with GoT its even stranger to include this given the Others / White Walkers were not destroyed by anything the Targaryens / Dany specifically did. The dragons were surprisingly ineffective against the White Walkers in fact , in the show canon anyway. And Aegon I's Conquest / the particulars of it were not really delved into in GoT either. In this show revealing such does not really add anything to the story and not related or affect anything. Only really connects and reminds many of later GoT which many people want to forget and move on from. Seems much more appropriate for an Aegon's Conquest concept on screen or to be revealed in the books. Does not really fit or add anything and really not relevant at all to this concept. The Dance of the Dragons is about a familial struggle and civil war. Everything centers around this strife and conflict which leads to the decline of the Targaryens. Just seems strange to me to even include for me but also to do so, so bluntly in E1. May come up again this season but will likely continue to seem as out of place and not particularly relevant to the DotD narrative.

What does sapocnik s interview have to do with the show??? Who cares what he says or how they market it? Was the scene good or not? Last scene...It is not a changing of the book...george hinted it in numerous interviews

7:05 That's not Ralph Fiennes Gary! It's Rhys Ifans! 😂🤣😂

Great review Gary, just one thing: You said Ralph Fiennes, but you I think you meant Rhys Ifans (the actor who plays Otto Highttower). Rhys is Welsh, so his name sounds a bit different. Based on what I saw from the first episode, this has a darker, more authentic gothic vibe than Game of Thrones ever did. The dialogue is clearly more restrained and sparse.The cinematography, too, is wonderful. I think the show got off to a great start (or at the very least a promising one).

Thank you! I'm not familiar with the actor, but I was struggling to see Ralph Fiennes here lol like "are you sure that's him??"

@@sitcomchristian6886 Yes, he's a great actor in his own right (been in a lot of films from Notting Hill to the Amazing Spiderman). I really like him as Otto Hightower.

I enjoyed the first episode, had good pasting. Performance were very good except for some side characters. I do agree if they split the house duel and the birthing screen. The drama would hit pretty hard.

I thought the first episode was really good too. I'm tired of people saying "it's the wokest show ever!!". Doesn't seem woke to me.. YET! Perhaps tonight's episode will be woke af but ep. 1 was good imo.

The queen never breathed as a character, all her scenes she was pregnant: making the time spent on her death lose a little bit of punch, hence making Viserys' outbursts and daemons exile feel childish.

Gary, the Aegon thing was George’s idea that he told them. Make of that what you will, lol I never really cared about the Whitewalkers, anyway, tbh. The wall bored me. I’m watching this for Matt. I want the win for him

Don’t forget the show runners and actors said this show is going to take on the “patriarchy” and the daily mail said an insider portrayed this show as “women good and men bad”. So don’t get too confident this show is ‘good’ yet. People surrounding this show said it’s going to be game of woke.
