Name: Natasha Husein
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Size: 750 square feet (70 square meters)
Home type: Apartment
Years lived in: 1.5 years, rented
Rent: $2900
Natasha's 750 sq ft apartment in Brooklyn serves as a gorgeous sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of NYC. "When I moved in, I knew I wanted to create a happy space that was reminiscent of the peaceful Caribbean islands," says Natasha, "but without taking away from the beautiful apartment features, like the fireplace, molding, and beautiful hardwood floors." By using lighter woods and neutral furniture combined with blue accents, abstract art, and plenty of plants, Natasha has curated a perfect marriage between Brooklyn brownstone and beach bungalow.

Hello, everyone! Wow, it's so nice to see the final video! 🙂Thank you everyone for all the very sweet comments and questions (I'll try to answer as many as I can soon). One thing I wanted to address was that after watching the video, something stuck out to me around how I spoke about my parents' economic background. My intention was to honor and thank them for the sacrifices they made for me and my brother so that we could have as many opportunities as possible, which for me, includes being able to make a life for myself in New York City. I know my parents have only happy, fond memories of their home country and their upbringing, even though they might not have grown up with as many modern luxuries I take for granted every day. And that's something I believe we all strive for, no matter our background or situation. So in that way, there were very rich indeed. Thanks again and I'm so thankful Apartment Therapy offered me this opportunity to share my little home with everyone. :)

I love that you mention that you did not come from money. I'm also in Brooklyn and grew up poor. When I moved here it was so intimidating to see so many rich kids have it easy. I work hard, save, and am still not in my own apartment yet but I know it will happen. It's rare to see people on shows like this that are not privileged. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love your approach to color. Some people do strictly white, but you have pastels that add color in a soft way, and the occasional punch of color with blue. Because blue is a calming color it's not a hard punch that screams for attention. You also do colors in small scattered pieces so it feels balanced, not chaotic. ❤ Beautiful. Well done.

You have lovely decor and a smart layout, including and especially in putting the bedroom in the back. I suggest creating some sort of door between the bedroom and kitchen. On the cheap and easiest side you can do a curtain. On more expensive side, see if landlord would be okay w/ letting you put in a pocket door at your expense. If you plan to stay there for a long time, it's worth it.

Well. ...this is truly refreshing, A.T. .... As I was watching this, I immediately picked up on her ' Energy " and Aura. ... Humble ,grateful.... she's proud of what she as been able to accomplish in her life , sans the " I'm so great ," cockiness that I often see here.... the way she speaks of her Family is with care, honour and gratitude.... knowing that they might not have had the certain luxuries she is able to enjoy. ( I believe this is true for a majority of us ). Her space is not particularly my style ,since I'm more of Cottage/ Transitional/ English decor type gal..( oh... Those details in her Apartment ..I was swooning over the floors, moulding, etc. ) .. ; However, it is soooo lovely... she did a wonderful job on the arrangement of rooms, and it has a serene vibe ,even with her living so close to the street ,etc. Her attitude about Life, about who she is... not ostentatious, yet confident.... her parents should be proud of her ,it seems that what they desired to instill in her ( values, work ethic, it all shows up ) they indeed did do that. Cheers and many Blessings to you , Miss Natasha .

I love your apartment. It is perfect and beautiful. From my brief look around, I would add two things. I would close the left door opening to the bedroom by placing a tall piece of furniture on the dining room side with a tall piece of furniture on the bedroom side, each could not be too deep and with doors, providing a lot of storage. My second thought is to hang a drapery at the bathroom door opening so a guest could have privacy. Thanks for the tour, oh and your dog is precious!!

When brownstones that were built as single family homes are converted to apartments, some floors aren't easily divided. You're on the "parlor" floor, so there wouldn't have been a need to have doors between the sitting room and maybe a library. But what you've done is beautiful. (And I heard nothing but love regarding your parents' life. 🙂)
@denverdubois5835
@denverdubois5835 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. When choosing a flat in a converted house, I always prefer the main floor as the rooms tend to be bigger and have higher ceilings. But the nicest flat I ever had was in a 1904 brown shingle home--I had an old bedroom for my kitchen and bath, and my main room was the former upstairs parlor, complete with built-ins and a lovely working fireplace. I still miss that flat! Did you notice the double doors behind Natasha's couch? I'm guessing that they're the original doors from the foyer--French doors as opposed to pocket doors, I guess. I'm sure that's why she said that she could hear everyone coming and going, too. I'd put up drapes over them if I lived there--I'm sure she never opens them and it would help with noise.

Just a tiny suggestion for you - as you mentioned there is no door to the bathroom- you can always use a beautiful rattan two panel or even a one panel divider for privacy- or to create a path to the bathroom with a 3 panel to create separation to that space. I myself would probably opt for a 2 panel rattan divider - That aside, you really scored renting out that space. Just stunning 🤩

Great suggestions! I also noticed in one of the bedroom doorways that there looks to have been a door hung there previously. It wouldn't be too difficult to measure the doorways in question and source an old door from an antique dealer, salvage yard etc. I did this myself in my home--the old swinging door between the kitchen and dining room had been removed, and I happily found an old door at a salvage place and had it cut down slightly to fit and installed. Just a one time expense and well worth it. I think it cost me $200-300 and it's hardwood with a pebbled glass pane.

@@JAMoore-zz3ki Yeah, I was wondering what the issue was there since it clearly has a door? Maybe that it's off the dining area and that's weird. My house has the same problem, but I installed a noisy exhaust fan in the bathroom LOL. Does the trick.

Love this home! Glad Natasha also spoke of her experience being the child of poor immigrants. However, I no longer think we should look at being able to live on your own as a marker that you have “made it.” Many people I know choose to live with roommates/friends/partners even though they could afford to live on their own. Sometimes it’s about creating community, especially in a city that is as intense and potentially isolating as NYC. ✨
