Another parallel he had with the young boy. After he tricked the kid into admitting his age while looking at the x-ray, the kid mentioned how his birthday was a few days prior and within the time frame of the episode, House also had his birthday…secretly of course lol. I wouldn't say it's sweet or unlike him. He has a code against being a tattletale and if you notice, he NEVER rats anyone out unless there is literally no other choice. I think most people miss the last scene where he realizes that once the mom is cured and becomes "rational" again, she becomes another liar (the motto of the show is "everyone lies") and in a way validates Dr. House's lack of trust in humanity. It has nothing to do with disappointment. I think many people who watch House watch it because they are actually mental and it helps them cope. Simple truth is, House is rational, and thus strongly skewed towards a utilitarian point of view. Stating the truth would do nothing for any party involved. It would absolve House, but House doesnt care, so no utility. If you notice through the rest of the show , House stands for the truth while standing for a higher value, thus raising an issue of principle and integrity. If that is not an issue, anything goes. That being said, House is human. Bottom line: Sweet...naaah. Unlike him...HELL NAH

I just now realized how much this hurt Chase. Knowing Chase's backstory, you realize when he sees Mrs Palmeri with her son, him regretting that he couldn't save his own mother. The way he chokes out “You’re welcome” at 8:13 is a fantastic little moment of acting. House is so uncomfortable with praise, both giving and accepting, and responds to her message thanking him only after (a) hearing it, (b) being reminded of it, and (c) suffering an awkward silence while waiting for the elevator to get to the ground floor. It was the last thing he wanted to do, and the kid really bailed him out by telling him he was a jerk and giving him an excuse to make up a lie about Cuddy.

House is particularly interested in this case because of the son-mother dynamic. It's revealed later that he was always close to his mother--and that he couldn't be with his father, because of the latter's personality and treatment of him. House recognizes how the son in the episode rises against the odds, something that he has also had to do while growing up. Interesting connection right there.

I like the “madness of King George” reference as it may allude (intentionally or not) to Hugh Laurie’s time on Blackadder. Hugh played the Prince Regent, the son of King George III, who had porphyria and was “mad” as a result. The British accent that Hugh uses in this episode is fairly similar to the one he used when playing the character.

My aunt has schizophrenia, she's not off the wall all the time. She does have clear moments, they're just not as common for her as for everyone else. She recognizes when she or someone else is treated badly or if they're in pain and I remember one time she called my mother out over something (and my aunt was in the right). And my aunt's diagnosis is far from mild. She's run out of stores because the voices in her head were too much and she thought that people in the store were harassing her and calling her names but it was all a delusion.

After a year and a half of chronic pain when Wilson asked about leaving the office and house says "I like to walk" I'm just yelling "leave the man alone! He's got a messed up leg and he needs to walk!" I did not let them give me any strong pain killers for my pain. But I can understand house's dance with drug seeking vs pain escape a LOT better than I could have when this came out.

@@roku401 nothing that dramatic. It can be fatal if undiagnosed, however it is very treatable. I just have to get periodic blood draws to get rid of excess iron. The arthritic damage to my joints is permanent though. Before 1996 (I believe that's the year) there was no way to see if you had the mutated genes, Death is usually how families found out. One famous person had it that I know of, Ernest Hemingway. If you know anyone in your family who has it, you should at least get tested for the mutation, just to be safe as it's hereditary. (I think there are ways it can occur otherwise, but I'm no expert). Three reasons it goes undiagnosed as long as it does is symptoms get dismissed to aging, mot Doctors rarely see cases of it and don't actively pursue it as a diagnosis, and the last one is the test for iron levels in the blood was removed from yearly physicals as a cost savings from insurance companies. The last one is the real kicker because it would trigger the test for the gene mutation. None of my original 4 doctors thought to check for it on their own by the way. I found out a family member had it and asked for the test myself. That is one hell of a scary thought, isn't it? PS: That dyalisis he ordered was probably due to organ failure because iron gets deposited in the bodies organs and joints over the years. I was lucky and found out before it got that far.

It always bothered me how Forman would dismiss every correct idea because the disease was rare. Like dude, you work for a doctor who only takes the weirdest, most difficult to explain cases. Often times people who have seen a dozen other doctors and haven’t been able to find a diagnosis. Of course it’s something rare! If it wasn’t some rare and difficult to explain the patient wouldn’t be in your ward. But of course the actor who plays Foreman was great. It just seems like writers just didn’t have much for him to say sometimes and defaulted to “IT CAN’T BE THAT! That’s rare!”.
