I really appreciate the details near the end showing that Epictetus and Marcus Aurelias are on opposite sides of the financial/societal spectrum, yet face their hardships in life as though they are equals. It goes to show that life is a struggle for all of us and that no one man can escape them, but it's how we face them that truly matters.

I think a lot of the more superficial or lighter Stoicism stuff leaves out the Nature aspect. People who promote Stoicism as sort of self-empowerment strategy without being focused on the natural order of things, as they were, almost invariably fail.

You should watch "How Stoicism Became the World's Greatest Scam."
@kennethdubard90652 ай бұрын
I'm not sure. Care to give a synopsis?
@scottk15252 ай бұрын
@@kennethdubard9065 Most "stoicism" being marketed isn't true stoicism. It's "bro-icism." Meaning, it's not about enduring suffering or controlling one's emotions under adversity so much as it is about accomplishing things, solving problems, moving forward, being cool and powerful, attracting women, etc.. In other words, it's just superficial hustle culture protocols masquerading as ancient philosophy in the hopes of appearing deep and timeless. I think if you could bring the OG stoic philosophers to the modern age in a time machine, and show them all these hustle bros marketing and merchandising "stoicism" with endless gimmicky self improvement content, they would think it's an absolute travesty.
@kennethdubard90652 ай бұрын
@@scottk1525 That was the impression I have gotten from the little I had heard of the film. The hyperbolic title is problematic. Stoicism has suffered from pejoration. Many critics of say, for example, Ryan use a wide and flat screed to accuse him of things he's not actually doing and stances he doesn't actually take. If someone like Andrew Tate mentions Stoicism it puts me off because I know it's going to be way off. Ryan has gone out of his way to call these types out because it is Just. Does Ryan make more money than me or probably you? I bet. Is there a coordinated scam on the behalf of Stoicism that deserves to be called the "World's Greatest Scam?" No. That's dumb. The World's greatest scam is trickle down economics, lol.
@scottk15252 ай бұрын
@@kennethdubard9065 Yeah the title is hyperbolic for sure, but the video is spot on. He actually takes it pretty easy on Ryan, mostly just giving him guff for his excessive merchandising (memento mori coins, 7-day courses, etc) Personally I find Ryan's stuff to be about half true stoicism and half generic problem solving and generic life advice. Just an example, he recently put out a video about having hobbies. He tried *so hard* to make this tip relevant to stoicism, but it's not. Not even a little. He has a bad habit of interpreting literally everything as either stoic or non-stoic. If an action you take solved a problem, helped you overcome something, or even just made you feel better, congratulations, you behaved like a stoic. If not, not. He once called Elon Musk out for not being "stoic" about his decision to buy Twitter. It's getting weird.
@kennethdubard90652 ай бұрын
@@scottk1525 I personally don't see anything particularly un-Stoic about making a living. Certainly not all of the greats were a monolith of aseticism. It takes money to do things these days, and a discussion can be had about the elimination of free public spaces like the Stoa. I'll probably watch the movie and check my bias while acknowledging I am. I, for one, am happy to have this philosophy and its practitioners close at hand. I keep the four pillars in mind when judging the quality of the ideas.

I am a 7th grade English teacher who instituted your "Commonplace Book" in my classroom last year. I saw such a difference and was so grateful for stumbling across your video that sparked it all, that I reached out in an email via your book store. I did not hear back. At the end of the school year last year, I was so pleased at the progress my kids made, I put together a packet of their best samples, printed them in color, and sent them to you, along with a cover letter expressing my appreciation for what it had done to enhance the students' reading experience. I did not receive a response. I followed it up with another email a few weeks ago. Still no response. If you are on this platform to inspire people, the least you could do is give them the courtesy of acknowledgment when you do. Unbelievably disappointed and unsubscribed.
@johnsquires3873 ай бұрын
Whether there is a response or not, you know the good that it brought to your students. If their lives were changed for the better, all is good. There is no fame in virtue.
@kateygreene99913 ай бұрын
@@johnsquires387 I see you point; however, all that effort was not for me. It was to show my 7th grade kids there are real, "normal" people out there who can testify to the benefits of reading. And I wanted them to hear it from someone besides me. There is also something to be said for common courtesy.
