Art is a lifesaver for so many of us! When i was in a situation where i couldn’t draw/paint/animate it was like there was a part of my soul that was missing. Art is so much of our identity and it felt like my identity was missing. Also, my roomate worked for VIP Kid and it sounded awful 😬

Your story is inspirational Sean, just like you are as a person and you've motivated so many people. I also went through the thing where people were telling me art wouldnt make money and I had to get into business things. My parents ended up throwing out all my sketchbooks and all of the comic pages I'd been working on that they found. I completely gave up on traditional art after that, and only slowly got into digital art. But now Im getting $500+ commissions and helping other kids get into art in order to help their mental health and regulation. Not to mention getting back into comics, thanks to you!

@@TheArtMentor There were a lot of good points in this video! What resonated with me the most was that making good art professionally is, at the end of the day, a very, very long journey. It needs a lot of stamina, as even the people you mentioned from your school with lots of potential just gave up. And pandering to more popular genres and art styles just for the sake of appealing to more people is a shortsighted solution, especially if it doesn't resonate with you. I recently spent a lot of time and energy improving my portfolio, but it wasn't enough to get an artistic job. Getting a normal 9-to-5 now in order to pay the bills took a lot of my motivation to pick up a pen and keep going. Art was always a big part of my life, and I shouldn't give it up that easily. I still have to remind myself that this isn't the end of my journey, and this video helped me a lot with that! So thanks a lot for that :)

Art helps me express anything, if I am happy I draw a landscape with a happy atmosphere, if I feel sad, instead of turning to destructive behaviors, I sit in my chair, I start sketching, and I make a desolate landscape, perhaps representing what I feel, and it is quite therapeutic, it gives me a perspective of things, and since I have never been a person of words or expressions, it is quite relaxing to draw :)
@TheArtMentor Жыл бұрын
I bet that helps you figure yourself out so that you can respond appropriately to your situations, doesn’t it?
@zinzolin14 Жыл бұрын
I've always been the "drawing kid" wherever I went. I knew I wanted to be an artist but so many voices deterred me from doing so. I simply loved to draw and create, and I knew I had to find a way to keep doing it. For the most part I kept on drawing and growing, until life crept up and I had to set it aside. It wasn't until everything in my life fell apart (pre and post Covid) that I came back to digital art and I haven't stopped since. I'm glad I've always had my one love in life by my side at all times. Now I'm 30 and focused on making art my full-time career. I always turn to you for tips and guidance to make it a reality. 🌈

Interesting take. It's true that art for many is a form of escapism, any art form really be it music, painting, even comedy. I guess, about the "art drop" in younger years, it's because once the cool and fun factor are replaced by other forms of interest and hobbys, the only ones that keep going are those feeling art in their guts, those who cannot express themselves any other way, creative expression almost being another organ in your body so to speak. How can you envision grinding your skills for years if you don't resonate with art on a primal level, that's who you are. So yeah your story tells the tale to truely embrace who you are, I'm pretty sure a lot of musicians couldn't live without music, and many story tellers would implode without a way to tell their stories. I guess the jealousy stems from seeing a strong drive to pursue their own path, after all we live in a gigantic, blue, crab bucket.
@TheArtMentor Жыл бұрын
Can I say though that art is far better and more productive than escapism? It’s cathartic and allows us to explore ourselves while focusing on a positive task that we can explore safely. Rather than escapism, which is a mindless numbing act, artmaking is entirely positive with no negative consequences (within reason of course). Does that make sense?
@elfrou20 Жыл бұрын
@@TheArtMentor Yeah cathartic is a better word, English isn't my main language, by escapism I meant a way to let your thoughts wander somewhere else you know, enter into your imagination and creative process. Makes sense?

My adventure with art has been a very weird one but it turned out to be the lifesaver for me. I tend to suffer a lot from dark thoughts and depression but this hobby (paired with other creative games such as Minecraft) has been helpful in dulling out the negative stuff in my mind. That and the fact that this silly little hobby can now help me out in staying afloat in tandem with my job. This year has been a wild one with art since I've faced highs and lows and points where I had became desperate but fortunately, I pulled through and was rewarded for it.

I remembered doing a lot of art at one point during my Secondary school (Highschool for those from the land of the eagles), doing my family portrait sketches and others. Then I just dropped it for some reason that I can't recall. Maybe it was a combination of no guidance so I had no idea how to improve, and partially because I grew up in a society that look down on art careers or artists in general. Then university came and I have some time away from my studies. I picked up art again only because I was in a fandom and so I was doing lots of fanart and even entire fan comics. Sadly the art style was quite simplistic, but I did learn a lot about anatomy, perspective, and arranging comic panels. I still get asked on the platform if I'll ever go back to making the comics, but as a father and sole provider now, I don't have the time to throw 10+ hours into a comic page to post for free online anymore. Now I'm hoping to get into commissions but I don't get any client yet, though I admit I hadn't been trying hard enough.

Can I first say I'm proud of you? That's great that you're being brave in a world that largely misunderstands art and artists. It's worthwhile, so do your best and don't give up, okay? For commissions, have you watched my advice videos on those?

Well thank goodness for COVID I guess. I look to your channel first mostly for art advice. I love your videos and the value they hold. Art for mr is my get away from life. I too was bullied and art was the one thing where I could get away from that. I'm grateful that the high school I went to had an extensive art program. The community college I went to after that was the same way. I learned throughout the years about what I could about art. I'm still learning today and I love everything about it. Thank you Sean for putting all this out there.

One day my art teacher told about so many famous artists with similar disabilities like mines can do it. So I draw my animal girl named shizu I remember going the library to check how to draw books on anime characters one time I got caught with nudity in the book in it my teacher make me turn it back. I looking back what my mother and others told never give up my dreams nowadays I have a lot to learn but once I am in peacefully in mind. I guess all the people bullies cause me to have grit and be stubborn to not quit regardless there I want to but this I keep going no matter its a lonely road but not alone. The bullies thought being me being quiet means they should teach me "lessons on life" messed up game of "find what trigers the bully" to avoid bullying.
