For many being transported to Australia was the best break they ever got. My ancestor (John Grant) got shipped to Australia as a convict from Ireland in 1811. He worked hard and earned trust and eventually was put in charge of the estate of the colonies Assistant Surgeon. A few years later he petitioned Governor Macquarie for a mitigation of his sentence resulting in a pardon in 1820 on the condition he stayed in Australia. He was granted land (which he called Moyne Farm, named after his home in Ireland) and convicts in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. By 1828 - 17 years after transportation - he had about 4,150 of acres of land, about 10,000 livestock and over 50 men working for him - many were serving convicts. Later he was granted even more land further west at Canowindra. He ended up with massive holdings of several thousand acres and livestock. He died at 74, a very wealthy man with an estate worth about 3,000 pounds which is millions of pounds in today’s terms. None of this would have been possible if he'd remained in Ireland - he would have died very poor, probably at a young age.
@emrox41815 жыл бұрын
Fun fact for anyone unfamiliar with this history. It was convict etiquette to not cry, complain, or make a fuss about any of these punishments. This was done so the guards and person doing the punishment wouldn't get the satisfaction of knowing that they beat them. Thanks for reading, from an Aussie with convict ancestors. 😁🇦🇺

I’ve learned recently about the penal colonies, and my teacher said that the British sent people to Australia as a punishment for their crimes. It was virtually impossible to escape from the island, and even if someone did, it would be a very treacherous journey to reach a safe country.
@keegan66664 жыл бұрын
Some tried to escape and it didn't work out for them. There was particular event of alexander pearce who was working in a chain gang working in Tasmania forest and managed to overpower their supervisor to escape into the thick Tasmanian forests with the plan to make it to the north of Tasmania, sailing across the bass strait on a raft and passing off as a emancipators or free settlers in other colonies. They got lost in the really dense rainforests and didn't have knowledge of how to get food. They eventually killed and cannibalised each other individually, with pearce being the only survivor who managed to make it back to the convict settlement that he escaped from. He was later hanged for the murder of one of the convicts, after they found body parts in his pockets.

In fact, once settled in Australia, the convicts consumed a diet, and experienced housing, superior to that received by free men and women at home. The organisation of their work was not very different from that in Britain and Ireland and, while cruel treatment did exist, the likelihood of numerous floggings during their term of sentence is shown to be a myth. See Convict workers : reinterpreting Australia's past / edited by Stephen, Cambridge University Press.
