This video segment is from "Beyond Is Genesis History? Vol 1 : Rocks & Fossils," the follow-up to our feature-length film where we explore the impact of the global Flood on the Earth. Check it out on our website: bit.ly/BIGH-1.
Andrew Snelling continues discussing radioisotope dating, including whether excess heat would be a problem for accelerated decay rates. He then examines radiocarbon dating and determines whether carbon-14 has been found in dinosaur bones, coal and diamonds.
Dr. Snelling completed a BS in applied geology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, graduating with first-class honors in 1975. His PhD in geology was awarded in 1982 by The University of Sydney for his research thesis titled “A Geochemical Study of the Koongarra Uranium Deposit, Northern Territory, Australia.” Dr. Snelling worked for six years in the exploration and mining industries in Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, variously as a field, mine, and research geologist. For over ten years, Dr. Snelling was a research consultant to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization for an international collaborative research project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy which involved university and government research scientists from the USA, UK, Australia, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Austria and Belgium.

I’m always fascinated by this subject. Just curious, is carbon-14 dating even valid when measuring the age of the Earth? Why would you not use the inorganic zircon uranium238 - lead isotope decay method which geologists have applied widely since at least the 1970s. Carbon dating isn’t even valid in this context, due to the much shorter half life of carbon isotopes. Rocks, minerals and fossils require other testing methods. Diamond and coal always contain trace C-14 isotopes (it’s no secret) but there is not enough to act as a meaningful measure of its true age. Carbon dating is best used to date organic matter and cultural artifacts, not rock. Geologists don’t even apply carbon 14 dating for deep time measurements. They have a bunch of valid deep time dating methods - and not just zircon dating. There is the rubidium-strontium method, lead-210 process, rhenium-osmium-187 method, fission-track dating, plus the thorium-230 method. Also the potassium-argon dating method. Some used more than others. Professional geologists seem satisfied with the results of the zircon method, I do know that. The Jack Hills detritol zircons in Western Australia being date ranged to between 3.4 and 4.4 billion years old, for example. The zircons found in Acasta gneiss from northern Canada have a similar age. The thing is a professional geologists already know when C-14 can and cannot be used. Geochronology is an advanced, complex science. People that work in this field also know about chemistry and physics.

When logic prevails over bias/desire, it's hard to accept the "science" of evolutionary creation; especially when scientific advances deny their claims. Sadly bias and desire have prevailed with most scientists, who due to the previously mentioned advances in science, are forced to spend more/more time trying to understand and explain why their discoveries point to God, Intelligent design, and a Biblical account of creation vs *"no one x nothing = everything* which logic says *is not feasable.* *Question:* how can "governing laws" exist w/o a "law giver" [God]? Remember; secular science has proven that these "governing laws" *cannot* write themselves? Hint: a secular world view cannot cogently answer this question; only a Biblical world view can. To anyone whose willing to see these *"laws of nature/science"* literally in action, while providing a clear scientific explanation of what you're seeing, just ask and you'll see.

@Kraig StClair I don’t need evidence for faith, but there is a ton of evidence to back up the Bible. The constitution was based on the Bible… hence the coins that say in God we trust, the Ten Commandments in the court rooms etc. all of creation screams intelligent design! Take anything and examine it and you will see that it is super complex. Cells, reproduce every few hours. They now know that there are billions of complex information centers in our cells. Our eyes are more capable than any camera. All dating methods point to a common date. For example tree rings, ice layers, even u-238 if “scientists” would look at the data. Mount saint Helen’s rocked evolution in a way that few other events have… layers of sediment formed in under 8 hours shows that the Grand Canyon did the same. Rocks dated from there came up with over a million years on their age but were at the time 10 years old, proved dating methods were garbage. Catastrophic events prove that dating methods are flawed. But again I say I don’t need evidence to believe, I can see complexity and have rational thought. You see complexity and believe that it all happened by chance? Life was formed from non life that could reproduce… simultaneously it evolved in an atmosphere that could sustain life 🤯 and morph into every thing we see today?! You have way more faith than I do

Most of the experts do not consider C14 in diamonds to be a major problem. They dismiss the concern. You can find untestable assertions used to dismiss the presense of C14 in materials that are clsimed to be millions and billions of years old . Could you test the effect of electric charge on decay rates? Decay rates fluctuate slightly by season, and the charge must be the property which modulates it. A massive change in the planetary charge, such as would occur in a worlds in collision type scenario, specifically an increase in positive charge, would slow decay rates, I believe. If several near misses occurred, culminating in the capture of the moon, these periodic interplanetary lightening bolts would transfer lots of charge to Earth. This could be a method of getting a rough estimate of actual epochs.

@@Dasycottus I'm not sure about decay rates, but I've read a good bit that suggests electrical discharges actually create radioactive elements. They weren't created inside exploding stars like we're told. And when you put crystal (like in granite) under pressure, it generates an electric charge. If you had an enormous catastrophe like the flood going on with rock being pushed and crushed, tectonic activity on a global scale all at one time, it would generate massive electrical discharges across the planet. Which could be responsible for the radioactive elements in the crust (which is where they say 90+% of those elements exist).

An informational observation on carbon 14 dating in and of itself: Carbon 14 dating assumes a stable system, with stable, unchanging levels of carbon 14 being present. This is an erroneous assumption. Carbon 14 levels are not, and probably never have been in equilibrium The rate of decay is constant, but the rate of formation varies based on the percentage of nitrogen in the atmosphere, and the level of cosmic radiation striking the upper atmosphere. Neither value is a constant. Additionally, the present rate of formation of carbon 14 verses the rate of decay is not in equilibrium, with carbon 14 formation being greater at this time than the rate of decay. This needs to be factored in when aging a sample or the test will indicate an age that is older than the actual age of the sample. This is why carbon 14 dating is not seen as reliable for aging samples of a great antiquity.

The Hebrew Sabbath was originally a Sabbathon . . . it was celebrated at intervals of seven days, corresponding with the changes in the moon’s phases . . . Encyclopaedia Biblica, 1899, p. 4180. Shabbat originally arose from the lunar cycle, containing four weeks ending in Sabbath, plus one or two additional unreckoned days per [lunar] month. The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia: Volume 10 Cohen, Simon (1943 p 482-483.) the week of seven days was connected with the lunar month, of which it is, approximately, a fourth . . .“ The Jewish Encyclopedia The Hebrew month is a lunar month and the quarter of this period - one phase of the moon - appears to have determined the week of seven days. Encyclopaedia Biblica, 1899, p. 4780. At first the New Moon festival was not counted among the seven days of the week; after 28 days had elapsed [7 days x 4 weeks], one or two days were intercalated as New Moon days, whereupon a new cycle of four weeks began, so that the Sabbath was a movable festival…. Later the week and the Sabbath became fixed [to the Roman cycling planetary week]; and this gradually resulted in taking away from the New Moon festival its popular importance. . . The Jewish Encyclopedia, Pastoral Feast. The [early] Hebrews employed lunar seven-day weeks, which ended with special observances on the seventh day, but none the less were tied to the moon’s course. Rest Days, Hutton Webster, p. 254-255 The weeks do not continue in a regular cycle regardless of the moon. Each month has four weeks, the beginning with the New Moon. I have no doubt that this was the old Hebrew system. Babylonian Menologies and the Semitic Calendars, p. 89. The connection of the Sabbath with lunar phases, however, was (later) discarded by the Israelites . . . The New Schaff-Herzog Religious Encyclopedia, p. 135-136. It is certain that the Jews celebrated . . . Pentecost . . . without regard in either case to the day of the [modern Roman] week. Oxford English Dictionary, 1971 Edition, Vol. 2, Pentecost. The Sabbath depending, in Israel’s nomadic period, upon the observation of the phases of the moon, it could not, accordingly be a fixed day [meaning a fixed planetary day of the modern Roman cycling week]. The Jewish Encyclopedia: Volume 10, p. 590. Most theologians and some scholars assume that mainstream Jewish society, at the time of Jesus was practicing a fixed seven-day week which was the same as the modern fixed [cycling planetary designations] seven-day week. This is extremely doubtful. The change, from a lunar to a fixed week, was brought about by the power and influence of Rome. As long as the Nazarenes held power in Jerusalem, all Roman practices and customs, including that of the consecutive week, were held at bay. Shawui Sabbath: Ancient Sabbath Observance In the years following Clement of Alexandria’s time (A.D. 150-215), an ominous change started to take place that was to radically change the Christian concept of the Sabbath. This intimate connection between the week and the month was soon dissolved. It is certain that the week soon followed a development of its own, and it became the custom - without paying any regard to the days of the month (i.e. the luni-solar month) . . . so that the New Moon no longer coincided with the first day of the month. Then, on page 4179 of the same encyclopedia, we read: “The introduction of the custom of celebrating the Sabbath every 7th day, irrespective of the relationship of the day to the moon’s phases, led to a complete separation from the ancient view of the Sabbath. . . Encyclopaedia Biblica, 1903 p. 5290. It should be noted that the oldest dated Christian inscription to employ a planetary designation [Sunday thru Saturday, unbroken weekly cycles] belongs to the year 269 A.D. Inscriptiones Christianae urbis Romae, ed. De Rossi, 1861, i, No. 1. The present Jewish calendar was fixed [changed to the Roman planetary weekly cycle] in the fourth century. Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Letter by Louis Finkelstein to Dr. L. E. Froom, Feb. 20, 1939. Some Dead Sea Scrolls, such as 4Q325, 4Q326, 4Q327, and 4Q394, contain fixed week calendar systems which may represent an early attempted transition from the more ancient lunar phase week toward the modern fixed week made mandatory by Rome a few centuries later. Dead Sea Scroll fragments also preserve a luni-solar calendar, along with new and dark moons which are unnecessary if they only kept the purely solar calendar of 364 days. [Author Unknown] This change from the luni-solar to a fixed solar calendar occurred in Rome during the repressive measures which were enacted against ALL Jewish customs . . .during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. With the fall of the Nazarene headquarters…at Jerusalem, this new Roman calendar quickly spread throughout ‘Christendom.’ This new calendar not only replaced yearly festival dates such as Passover, but it also revamped the concept of the week and its seventh-day. Iranaeus 2nd Century A.D. The calendar was used by ALL the original disciples of Yeshua…This original Nazarene lunar-solar calendar was supplanted by a Roman “planetary week” and calendar in 135 C.E. - when the “Bishops of the Circumcision” were displaced from Jerusalem. This began a three hundred year controversy concerning the TRUE CALENDAR AND CORRECT SABBATH: This [calendar] controversy arose after the exodus of the bishops of the circumcision and has continued until our time.” Epiphanius, HE4, 6, 4. In the years following Clement of Alexandria’s time, an ominous change started to take place that was to radically change the Christian concept of the Sabbath. This intimate connection, records the Encyclopedia Biblica, between the week and the month was soon dissolved. It is certain that the week soon followed a development of its own, and it became the custom without paying any regard to the days of the month [i.e. the lunar month]. Encyclopedia Biblica p. 5290. “The early Christians [Messiah followers] had at first adopted the Jewish [lunar] seven-day week with its numbered weekdays, but by the close of the third century A.D. this began to give way to the planetary week; and in the fourth and fifth centuries the pagan designations became generally accepted in the western half of Christendom. The use of the planetary names by Christians attests to the growing influence of astrological speculations introduced by converts from paganism.” Rest Days: A Study in Early Law and Morality. New York: The MacMillan Company, 1916, p. 220. Sabbath and New Moon (Rosh Chodesh), both periodically recur in the course of the year. The New Moon is still, and the Sabbath originally was, dependent upon the lunar cycle. Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, “Holidays,” p. 410. The nations do their counting with the Sun, but Israel, with the Moon. The Mekilta, a work of Rabbi Yisma’el Merita (2nd century AD). “The first day of the lunar month was observed as a holy day. . . As on the Sabbath, trade and handicraft work were stopped (Amos 8:5; Ezekiel 46:3) and the temple was opened for public worship…. It was an occasion for state banquets (1 Samuel. 20:5-24). Smith’s Bible Dictionary (1884): New Moon. Under the reign of Constantius the persecutions of the Jews reached such a height that the computation of the (luni-solar) calendar (was) forbidden under pain of severe punishment. Hi Tom, in his paradigm of a six thousand year earth history, the ratio of c14 to n14 or to c12 would have been 0:1 at the beginning, skewing radiocarbon ages highly, but less and less towards zero as c14 reached equilibrium. So ages of 1000 years could be accurate, but of 5000 years could show as almost greater than the measurable age for c14.
