Philly shell defense did not work for chavez sr. It is obvios canelo was to young when he fought maywether plus canelo was weight drained in the fight. There is a MASSIVE difference in the skill level use of the phillyshell between Floyd Mayweather (arguably having the best philly shell defense in history) and Caleb Plant. That's a huge factor in the success Canelo had. There is no doubt Canelo improved tremendously, and I do believe he would do better against mayweather if the matched up again. But Mayweather and Plant are completely different animals.

guys, mayweather didn't exclusively fight out of the L guard/mayweather defense/philly shell. floyd is a master boxer. not even considering that floyd also used a high guard and a long guard, floyd had the real time adaptability, athleticism, iq, bag of tricks, hand and foot speed, and ability to throw punches with authority even with brittle hands and not utilizing full power, and i could keep going. caleb plant isn't even a philly shell master let alone a reasonable mayweather substitute.

Now George Benson Philly Shell, but Holyfield uses the cross guard but its times they would be in the same position. Watch the Mayweather Canelo fight then watch the Bivol fight. Mayweather is attacking Canelo most of the fight, and he will be in the same position as Bivol. Then against Manny Floyd rarely uses the Philly shell, then step back counter he does a lot of other things with it.

You cannot claim that Canelo tamed the philly shell because he beat Plant who used the philly shell with his limited capability. The shell has been used by many fighters, some very well like Floyd and James Toney, others with limited aptitude like Plant and Haney. You don't tame the shell. The shell doesn't exist without the fighter using it and everybody uses it in a different way. The facts of the matter are, Canelo did not tame Mayweather's shell.
