Coca Cola founded its first bottling factory in India in 1950, just 3 years after India became independent. But soon after, India turned to socialism and began nationalizing many private companies, including Coca Cola. So how did Coca Cola escape the claws of India's socialist government and acquired 60% of India's beverage market share?

Fun Fact : When coca cola reentered India, it bought Indian brand Thums up which was most popular brand at that time. They did so to kill it so that coca cola could replace it. But when they did so, the market share held by Thums up was distributed between Coca Cola and Pepsi. To regain that market share back they had to relaunch Thums up again. Still today Thums up up is one of the most consumed drink in India alongside Coca cola, Pepsi and Sprite.

You should learn more. Narshima Rao or Manmohan Singh didn't want liberalisation. They wanted a big loan from IMF as Soviet Union collapsed and India was heavily dependent on Soviet Union. The IMF put the condition over loan that India will have to open its economy. I love IMF 😍

Socialists didn't lose, they just changed their politics in 1991. Congress was in power in 1977 and 1991. They had to change because India had reserves for only 2 weeks of imports in 1991, and it was one of the requirements for IMF loan. Now the reserves is over 400 billion.

@Another One Are you talking about current GDP or the GDP back in the 60s. I highly doubt that even in the 60s Coca Cola Co. had a higher revenue than India's GDP. Also yes the governments of that time were incompetent and the govt till the early 90's was controlled by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. First it was Jawaharlal Nehru, then Indira Gandhi(Daughter of Nehru), then Rajiv Gandhi(Son of Indira Gandhi) and even today the great grandson of Nehru, Rahul Gandhi is a candidate in elections but seeing as their incompetence in governing for 3-4 full decades Congress today soesnt even have 10% seats in Parliament while the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is a subsidiary of the Janata Party which formed resistance to Indira Gandhi's dictatorial rule and then came into power after she lost the next elections.

The pre-Rao congress really was a demolishing factor for India. First they broke down Tata Air, which could today have been a world-class airline. Then, they cracked down on foreign companies like Coca Cola. These companies had to wait for 30 years to enter the Indian market.
@nuclearrdx4045
@nuclearrdx4045 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm....not a demolishing factor. India then was a protectionist economy meant to develop india's socio-economic base. It worked, maybe not 100%. But it worked for what it was supposed to. It developed the basic infra like electricity, edu institutes, connectivity etc. The current gen is benefitting from it post 90's eco liberalisation.Analyse the past within its context.

Coca-Cola was kicked out by the Government of PM Morarji Desai and Mr George Fernandes who was the Minister of Industries at that time, and he was strongly opposed to the freedom given to many of the foreign companies operating in India at that time. I have loved most of your videos. Quiet descriptive and perfect sync with the timeline. But in this case I find it somewhat hard to believe the statement "90% of Indians had access to Coca-Cola while 10% of the Indian villages had access to safe drinking water" the latter being true though. Perhaps a nuanced or silly understanding of India's real socio-economic conditions by the bureaucratic aristocrats.

Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming; Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there: Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In fully glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh, long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution! No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust": And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

When cocacola came back to India they threatening their biggest Indian enemy 'Thumbs Up' to sold themselves to cocacala until they serve free drinks for a year. This complete killed a pure Indian brand. Now a day thumbs up is still more popular than cocacola, even after becoming a cocacola brand.

Coca Cola used some underhanded business practices to gain market share in India. When some Indian cola brands refused to sell out Coca Cola started buying large quantities of their products which were packaged in glass bottles and smashed these bottles en masse so that they couldn't be recycled. These smaller cola companies started hemorrhaging money as they were now forced to manufacture new bottles to replace the smashed ones and eventually went bankrupt. I miss Campa Cola and Gold Spot.
