As a sex educator, Emily Nagoski is often asked: How do couples sustain a strong sexual connection over the long term? In this funny, insightful talk, she shares her answer -- drawing on (somewhat surprising) research to reveal why some couples stop having sex while others keep up a connection for a lifetime.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Wow that's very powerful!!! Well said too!!! My husband and I just celebrated 10 yrs of marriage on Sept 12th, and 21 yrs in a committed relationship on Sept 18th, of 2019. We are bestfriends, and we choose to make each other as well as our sexual relationship a priority! It has worked for more than 21yrs for us. I love him, and I love hanging out and spending time with him. We are raising our now almost 8 yr old granddaughter, and we enjoy spending time"quality" time with her. We go hiking in a local State Park, we go to local recreational parks so she can play, and so do we. It's romantic to still enjoy hanging out. And we have had our share of ups and downs as a couple. But always choose each other and our relationship and friendship. Love this video!!! Thank you for putting this out there. I wish more ppl could have and experience the friendship and warmth of their special person!!!

Okay I'm doing the math 21 years together almost 8 year old granddaughter. So that would be 21 subtract 8 to figure out how old your child was when your granddaughter was born. Yeah no matter how I manipulate it the child set comes out as 13 when the grandchild was born.

@@TestMeatDollSteak After all these years and no one has corrected it (or i just choose a wrong site. I clicked first link i got). I don‘t know if i‘ve ever thought the lyrics that much is it "old" or "known". Thank you for telling me. :)

@@FadingPixel -- I suppose it could possibly be either/or, really. For example, the same lyric sheet gives the line "Our little tribe has always been and always will until the end" for the second verse of Teen Spirit, but he clearly sings "Our little _group_ has always been..." on the actual recording. And he sometimes sang the line with "tribe" instead of "group" when playing that song live. Then you also have to take into consideration Cobain's tendency to randomly change song lyrics when playing live, in general. I suppose this is only something that fans with OCD, such as myself, would even waste the brain power thinking about, so there's that, too ;)

Those who are saying they need a partner beforehand, what she’s talking about is the attitude: knowing what you want and not neglecting it. Cherishing what you have at hands is not an easy thing. Especially when you get used to having your partner around, you may start taking their presence for granted. Think abt what you love and see what you are doing with it or for it. If you start practicing appreciation once you finally meet the one, it might be a little late, cuz you can’t build a habit of appreciating and showing affection in a day. Hope this delivers.
@tarico4436
@tarico4436 5 жыл бұрын
Right. And then what is the attitude? It's love. She loves me. She doesn't want me to die of prostate cancer. She helps me achieve two oreganos per week for the lifetime of our contract (and yes I will reciprocate). Two oreganos per week lowers my chances of getting cancer by a third. (Hand not good enough, has to be an orifice.)
@petalss5325
@petalss5325 5 жыл бұрын
TAR ICO I’m saying you don’t need a partner to nurture the attitude. Do you really think there’s only THE ONLY love for ur partner? There can be many different shades of love. Romantic relationship can be one of the many loveable things.
@tarico4436
@tarico4436 5 жыл бұрын
@@petalss5325 Oh, I have to adopt the attitude to which you are referring! At work, if I don't act like I'm all hot and bothered by all the single ladies who are my coworkers, then I get fired. Treat female coworkers like equals, and I get fired. I literally had to apologize to one such female a few years ago. Why? Because I carried fifty pound boxes for one older woman, but then hinted to her that I would also carry her boxes if she said the magic word. The look she gave me was as if I had just threatened her with rape. Of course I said sorry, and quickly carried her boxes for her. Mind you, 7 petals, that all three of us were being paid the exact same wage. I got no bonus pay for carrying those heavy boxes for these delicate as a flower coworkers. No reciprocity at all.

@Rebecca Leeman We men aren't allowed to voice our differences anywhere but online. And sounds like you agree with being forced. That female coworker forced me to pick up those heavy boxes for her. One kind of force is just like any other kind of rapacious force, isn't it? I mean that's what you're implying, Rebecca. It's a good thing I don't think like you do. I'm not into forcing others, and you, Rebecca, clearly are. I'll see myself out of this comment thread. Good day.

Get out of the house, go to the library, the fair, the church, the course you always wanted to take. Be a real friend, and talk with people. Show genuine interest in people. Show your true colors, not any fake you. Because an act does not last.

I was an outgoing person, I had a lot of friends to hang out with, I went out, did a lot of interesting things, and things I loved, I was surrounded by people I loved who loved me. I was always true to myself, and to others. I had two significant relationships, it's too long to get into details but it didn't work out. And after meeting guys after guys who just want to f*ck and nothing else, I decided to stay celibate for now. I'm just tired. Life isn't like Sims. I don't know your story but in my experience love rarely happens this way. I'm sure the people who can't find a partner go out too, but not everyone is lucky to find someone

Younger generations are being forced to put so much more time and energy into getting their own lives together... between college and its expense, not being able to find jobs that put them above the poverty line, not being able to move away from home... why would you spend time trying to build a relationship and family when you can't get your own life together? "Faces in technology" is not the actual problem... just look at how many relationships start *because* the people in them were using technology. That's a misidentified issue being misdiagnosed by people cynical towards millennials and gen z.

The key is eating right, exercise, sleep, knowing what your partner likes in the bedroom, having fun, trying new things. You want an honest and emotional connection to your mate as well. Even after we get old and have lower levels of estrogen and testosterone, 'Healthy' people should want to f### until they die. It's physiology. If you don't, you can probably trace it back to some unhealthy sexual experience during childhood and becoming a man or woman. Can also happen in adulthood. Address that issue and find happiness with your partner.

The hedgehog metaphor is cute but doesn't go as far as she takes it. Sure, okay, 'prickly hurt feelings' are the hedgehogs, but what does it mean to turn toward them with compassion? Is this talking about why each person feels hurt? An airing of grievances? Is this forgiveness of grievances? Is this loving oneself by addressing one's own hedgehogs toward the partner? Apologising? Something else entirely? What?Everything else is very clean and makes sense. That part just doesn't work.

Yes I felt it was incomplete. But maybe functional for the average person who is woefully clueless about communication and relationships. If you are thoughtful enough to be asking your types of questions, you are probably already showing up in relationship well enough to skirt this issue.

You know.. I think sometimes in today’s day and age we want to (wish) that men don’t value attractiveness in their partner. We want to all be equal, but unfortunately a man and woman’s brains are wired differently. Women generally crave emotional closeness, while men crave attractiveness and sexiness. To note, this is not a blanket statement but it can be true for a vast majority. In the cases where I have seen couples drifting- divorcing/ a lot of times the woman has let herself go, gained weight, doesn’t care for her appearance as she ages, does not put effort into her dress. This can make a man not sexually attracted to you, no matter what time is set aside. Same with the woman- the man can become not interested in her day to day, maybe focused on other things or career instead of her, and regardless of anything she is not going to be into him sexually because her needs aren’t met. I just think there is normally so much more to WHY these marriages/ long term relationships fall apart or a party gets cheated on, and sometimes we as a generation are too sensitive to acknowledge the truth. Yes, it hurts to know that my husband loves me but if I gain 75 pounds and let myself go he may not sexually be into me but it’s something that you have to be mindful of because it is important to THEM. We as Americans just don’t want to accept these things because they hurt our feelings and our ego.

I’ve never heard something more misogynistic, you’ve obviously married the wrong person if you think this way hun

Seeing it as that is exactly what I am talking about. You are offended because you do not feel you should be valued by your appearance, and that’s great. I hope you meet someone who doesn’t value that! But in the MAJORITY of scientific studies, males view females aesthetic qualities higher than females view males. I do not wish to shame anyone who feels this way- I feel this way about emotional closeness and would not want anyone to shame me because of it. It’s not my opinion, it’s not misogynistic, it’s simply the way the brain is wired for a majority of males.

@@coastercouple1211 lol so what you're saying is that the majority of relationships fail because of men's misogyny and entitlement...? Also what percentage of relationships are there where women's weight gain is to be blamed and exactly what are women to do when they for instance have children... their body changes entirely... how are such man's attitudes compatible with ever keeping relationships together in that reality? This is what she's talking about tbh, the men in these scenarios you talk of lack compassion and a capacity to genuinely care for and meet their partner in the middle don't they. They insist that their partner shouldn't change even when everything changes in her body via his children, he insists on his wants and his need that she is a thing and object and does nothing to change himself to accommodate her qnd keep the relationship together. ...

@Clovis_Rose
@Clovis_Rose 5 жыл бұрын
They cannot kill a persons sexuality, but can inhibit hormonal sexual drive. The same way changing testosterone levels can affect sexual drive in men. Hormonal sexual drive can be considered the "spontaneous" sexual feelings she spoke of. But there can be many things to help combate hormonal changes which this talk discusses. Along with discussing different birth control methods if the effects are to severe. Different types have different hormones and amounts with the various changing levels affecting each women differently.
