I started taking it in the hand, when I was told that the priest was worried about getting infected when there was a bad flue about at the time, and I've kept it that way, but I'm not keen because I have to lick my hand as I have detected particles of our lord's body and blood and am reluctant to take it on my tongue as it's been a few years now.

I cannot agree more with you ! I receive the communion on the tongue, because I feel It be more reverent, more submissive to the Lord, for me it means total abandon, like a baby being fed to its mother's breast. But as you mentioned ultimately, It comes down to the attitude in one’s heart: the interior disposition, leading to reverence or not, whatever our posture. The Father at my church told me the same thing. He said he would get saliva on his fingers when giving communion on the tongue. I believe if done carefully, this can be avoided. I never saw accepting communion in the hand until recent years after being away from the church for many years.

It must be remembered that Communion on the tongue is the law of the Church. Communion in the hand is an exception to the law (it is an “indult”) which is not commanded but only allowed if all the conditions outlined by the Vatican are present. If the conditions are not present then the permission is not granted and Communion on the tongue only is permitted. The seven conditions are based on two principles as the official document points out. These two principles are not something that the Pope could change even if he wanted to because they are based on Divine Revelation itself. Every Occasion of Scandal Must Be Avoided....

This is correct. Now because of COVID is understandable why church gives permission but before this there was no problem and wrong to receive it in the Hand. If possible in your parish, receive it on the tongue while kneeling and with both hands together, if not receive it on the left hand to be pick up by the right hand also kneeling. Say a special prayer after asking g for forgiveness if we are doing wrong on listening and also for the bishops if they have wrongfully giving this permission. At least that’s what I do. Father Alar teaches you should never touch the host! If it’s in your hands you should eat it off your hand! If you touch it it’s you feeding yourself and not Jesus feeding you, that was his recommendation. But recently I started receiving on tongue.

I’m attempting to research which is traditional and most respectful - receiving on the tongue or hand? I wish to add the importance of eating the host immediately if receiving in the hand. At my church, receiving in the hand is the only option. I was shocked to see even receiving in a special case place in the hand, then simply closing the case and returning to the pew, to perhaps take home and eat later. Never saw anyone do this before. I believe this should not be allowed. Anyone know?

You see people receive the Blessed Sacrament to self-communicate at home, and you haven’t said anything and your priest allows that? For shame. The bishop ought to be hounded and if he won’t listen, continue going up the order. If what you see is extraordinary Eucharistic ministers taking communion to the infirm, the priest places the Eucharist in a pyx and they distribute communion per their training. I think the better question is "how did communion on the tongue become widespread?" The Apostles certainly did not receive the body of The Lord in any manner other than by their hands at The Last Supper. I could very well see a Monty Python comedy sketch with Our Lord shoving the bread into their mouths. No. The Church has allowed the reception of Holy Communion in the hand. To condemn what has been allowed is to go against The Church.

68 bishops of the world is not a majority. If I remember well, the gospels, not a gospel, but the gospels say that Jesus gave the Body to his apostles in their hand. The book of Acts state the people received the Body with their meal, not on the tongue, but as part of the meal. I was raised when you could not even touch the host with your teeth, and saw the priest just munch away. Yes, God wants reverence, but not a pagan reverence.

Nobody will dispute that Holy Communion has been placed in people's hands in the past, but, if you look further, you will see that there were many good reasons why this practice was abandoned. The abuse in the Netherlands was just the most recent in our times, but it should be noted that Martin Luther, in Germany, and Thomas Cranmer, in England, had to convince the Catholics in the sixteenth century they were just receiving bread and wine, so churches were ordered to remove altar rails and force them to stand and pick up the Host with their own fingers. The Catholics who complied soon became Protestants!

I have a strong devotion to the Holy Eucharist (God willing), always receive on the tongue and strongly desire that hand reception is abolished. I'm also an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and through the health ministry team at our parish, bring the Blessed Sacrament to sick individuals in the local hospital. The priests in the Diocese here are too few and far between to attend to every sick person desiring Holy Communion. Although a corporal work of mercy, should I refrain from volunteering in this ministry so as not to handle the Blessed Sacrament as a lay person?

My guess is that you should continue, if it is needed to bring the sacrament to the sick. That is a noble thing. There is no need for Eucharistic ministers in the ordinary sunday service, though. The priest can give communion.

I agree with you. Jesus is our brother, and we should joyfully and reverently receive Him be it by hand or tongue. I don't know what makes the tongue any 'holier' than the hand? Jesus is perfectly capable of preventing Himself from being desecrated (intentional or otherwise) by removing Himself from the fragment or morsel of the consecrated host, before it gets stepped on, thereby removing the 'consecrated' part and returning the bread morsel to its original state (bread). People get caught up in 'legalities', something our Lord warned us against.
