Us ford guys don't often get good Sound comparisons for a lot of the engines we like. With the ls platform being such a popular swap the ford exhaust comparisons don't always make to to the internet. well look no further I give you an open header comparison with an open 8 to 1 on a 4v ford modular engine. something I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE! I hope you enjoy the beautiful sounds of my Navi cart!

@@Izaiah_J I’m thinking I wanna start moving forward with it. The engine in my car currently runs pretty good but it does use oil so she’s kinda wore out it’s still pretty quick though although I think a little bit of that has to deal with the long tube headers and 4.10 rear gears I have installed. The 5.4 I have sitting waiting is the NVH motor (2001 and newer) with the factory forged crank shaft and I have a set of .020” over forged flattop pistons in it too… and I’ve got a couple sets of different options for cylinder heads not sure if I’m going with the navigator 59 mm intake port or the 50 mm 4.6 intake port I have a Australian BOSS 290 sitting around I may not use because I want to try and make a custom aluminum intake manifold to use the factory Marauder upper intake Plenum just so where I maintain as many of the factory emissions control Devices I want the car to look ‘normal’ and drive normal too. The one thing that’s really nice about the five point fours even though they don’t make crazy huge power numbers they have the same top end as the 4.6s but the horsepower and torque curves start over 1000 RPM sooner over the same 4.6 engines. Check out the Australian Ford falcon boss 260(260kW=354hp) and boss 290 (290kW=394hp) cars they have to 03-04 50 mm Cobra style heads on them with an average camshaft similar to that of the naturally aspirated cobras but closer to a Marauder style for the 260s and a camshaft that is similar in specs to the 2000 COBRA R mustangs for the Boss 290s.

One of the strangers projects I ever did for giggles and grins was I took a big old station wagon and set it up for autocross. The nocturnal road rally to be exact. This is one of those events that typically was 124 Fiat Volkswagens Datsuns and the like. What did this so that we and our female passengers could comfortably ride all night particularly during the special stages. These were all out balls-to-the-wall point A to point B timed events through a plow cornfield. This is where long-wheelbase station wagon 390 cube engine 4-barrel just shine brightly. I went through a lot of trouble make you properly matched tri-y headers 8 into 1 that were essentially whisper-quiet on the road and insanely rambunctious through the special sending judges for the ditches as the car would come around corners on two wheels heading for the finish line. 8 into 1 really did have a low-end torque performance benefit with the side benefit of being quiet to our surprise. From what I've gleaned over the years, it seems the pitch of the exhaust is dictated by how evenly you can stack the exhaust valve pulses. Your separate long tube headers are each stacking 4 uneven pulse (due to cross plane crank). This causes two of the pulses on each side to stack into a semi-single pulse. This results in a lower frequency of pulses overall. A flat plane V8 does a better job of stacking 4 pulses evenly per side which produces a higher frequency sound at a similar rpm with separate dual exhaust (like Ferrari 458). Your 8-1 has a higher pitch cause it's stacking all 8 pulses more-evenly and into a single noise outlet. If you were to create a perfectly equal length exhaust system (from each exhaust valve) you can stack all 8 pules perfectly evenly and get a crazy high frequency sound. For a great example, see the 2010 Honda HSV010 race cars from Japan with single exit exhaust. They didn't even use an 8-1 header. It was basically a VERY long 8-4-2-1 system that had the final 2-1 just before a single 5" race-cat as a muffler. This Results in a crazy sounding V8. In 2009 the NSX-GTs in Japan ran two different exhaust systems on their various cars in Super GT. The Autobacs team had a 6-2-1 single muffler design and the other teams ran dual 3-1 exhausts. The 6-2-1 Autobacs car made a V12 sound, while the other cars sounded like crud. Interestingly, Honda said their dual exhaust cars made more power than the single exhaust cars. But fans enjoyed the single-exhaust cars (both V6 and V8) much more.

So... I have a question about all-into-1 headers and the sound differences. Cuz I've heard some 8-1 that sound bland like a 4-cyl, and others that basically sound like this (demonic race car with a bit of 4-rotor overtones). Anyway, my question is, how do you have the exhaust pulses timed as far as which tube they're coming out of? Is it sequential in a clockwise or counter-clockwise pattern, or is it random? Or is it some other special pattern?
@Izaiah_J

Haven't read other comments, I am on my phone. I think you may be confused in what you are actually doing. The "8 into 1" is more commonly known as 180 degree headers. The best example to see a set installed on a Ford GT40 from the 60s. Most common name used was "bundle of snakes". These header route 2 primary tubes from right side of engine over to the left side collected, and routing two primary tubes over to the right side collected. Last step is to use a 2 into 1 connection to get a v8 sound. If you do not use the connected it will sound like 2 4 cylinder engines. The point tp 180 degree headers is to have all 4 pipes in each collected all firing equally spaced to give each cylinder the same scavavging. It would be interesting to see if using an "x" pipe instead of a 2 into 1 would give you v8 sound. This header setup almost always has to be done by hand by yourself or having it done by a shop would likely cost 40 to 50 hours in labour. Just picture trying to run 4 pipes under your engine. If you have rack and pinion steering that is somewhat easier.

I definitely made quite a few mistakes on this 8 to 1 build. I believe I stated in the video the information on the how to do it and the why it's even a thing was really tough to find. I've no idea if it's true, but I've read that 8 into 1 brings some issues with tube lengths that you don't have with 4 to1 collection, and the added chance of burning valves. I have no idea if that even makes sense, just passing on water cooler info, for all it's worth ^^ I've seen 8 to 1 on big single turbo cars, so it seems like it's a valid option, usually piped out a giant front end hater. I like the sound of the 8 to 1, but I also love the very FORD sound of 4 to 1 x 2

8-1 reminds me of x pipe in complete exhaust system but to be honest i like the 4-1 classic muscle car sound similar to h pipe

Wouldnt having the longtubes on backwards affect the scavenging and the sound?

that's a good question! its possible but i don't know for sure. I'm learning there's a lot of factors i didn't think of in this test. i hope i will have time in the future to test a lot of what I've learned. thanks for the comment!

Do you know at all if a Navi 5.4 4v would fit in a 2010 with the 3v 5.4 triton? I didn’t even realize it’s a 4v in this video
@Izaiah_J
@Izaiah_J Жыл бұрын
Physically yes it would fit. It would be a little tighter than the 3v But the computer and wiring harness would have to be changed for the 4v setup. As the 3v has a different computer than the 2v and 4v

Its crazy how much different that changes the sound, too bad you could jam this in but zero fitment lol

Does the firing rotation of the 8 to 1 collector match the firing order of the engine?

Unfortunately no. When I was building this i didn't find that in my research. I've gotten a lot more information since and I'm considering re doing it correctly

Now it’s time to try 180-degree with equal length pipes!
@FastPaull
@FastPaull 2 жыл бұрын
If the collector had a length of pipe after the merge it would sound alot better! You have to trap all of the exhaust pulses at one point. Not quite getting the effect with the merge itself being the exit.

Is it possible to swap this engine in a 99 v6 f150, and if so what would be necessary. Im looking at buying a 99 navigator from copart as a donor vehicle

@@Izaiah_J believe it or not You can make the 8 to 1 header sound with 4 to 1 well designed headers with length that is calculated individually for each cylinder because it is an odd firing engine and the angle between 2 firing cylinders is different I did the calculations for an LS a while ago If you are interested I can redo the calculations for you to see for yourself If its anything other than an LS provide me the firing order

You need a proper collector and a short section of pipe to really make it a legit 8-1. We need to see that.

Equal length headers routed into an 8-1 collector with a 4 inch pipe on the end. will have this engine sounding like an F1 car.
