PART 3 - How do I perform fuel injector adaptations for an N43 engine

- BMW E91 2008 Touring engine N43 (N43B20A)
- Delete the old DME adaptations, using INPA
- NOx catalytic converter - Activate Forced desulphation/cleaning session with INPA
- Re-learn new adaptations for engine
- Perform flywheel adaptations
- Diagnosis and maintanence NOX system
- How to check performance of NOx system
- Evaluation NOX lambda in the overrun mode
- Fault code 30EA: nitric oxide catalytic converter, sulphurized
About 3 weeks from the last forced desulphation session; fault code 30EA has returned.
The previous re-adaptation has not been completely successful.
I'll do it again now and monitoring adaptations.
A beginner like me and anyone who has not been familiar with the subject before; this topic is difficult to understand by reading. That's why this video was made. 😉

Nice video. Also have problems with this engine. Had to change injectors 1 and 4. Done the adaptations just now, apart the ones with cold engine.

Hi! I ran for about 15 min plus idle. What is DTC? FW-adapt. vent well. And the last from 100km (value 20 in a few sec) I'll try again with the sessions.

My N43 has light shutter by accelerating normal around 2000 to 2500 rpms mostly noticeable uphill. I want now reset all my adaptions from engine + transmission.. what should be first reset or can that be done at the same time ? Thank you so much !

I'm not able to do 110kmh to de desulphurization proces were I live. No roads where you can drive 110kph that long. Would it be possible to lift the back on the car, put it on wooden blocks and "Drive" 110kmh for half an hour?

How come your additive and multiplicative offsets are stuck at 0.00 mg/str and 0.000 %? Mine look the same, I'm sure they should differ from 0

Hi, really good video! I have learned a lot from watching. I've got an N53 and deleted all adaptions this morning. Followed instructions but I only have 3 learnbits turned black in the injector page. Do I just need to be patient and do some more driving? At the moment the ones that have turned black are 1 and 4 in the left column and number 2 in the right column. I noticed in your video number 2 on the left column went black before number 2 on the right column. Do I need to start again? I hope that makes sense.

Thanks! When you perform an adaptation; all 6 balls must be black (like video) to complete the adaptation. After the adaptation the situation may change depending on whether the engine is cold or warm etc ... Translations of balls below: German -> English: LEFT 1. Germany: lambdaadaption am bandende hat fertig gelernt English: Lambda adaptation at the end of the band has already learned LEFT 2. Germany: lambda adaption ist nötig, zyklisch während Motorbetrieb zu 1 gesetzt = English: Lambda adaptation is necessary, cyclically set to 1 during engine operation LEFT 3. Germany: Zylinderselektive Lambdaregelung fordert homogen an = English: Cylinder-selective lambda control requests homogeneously LEFT 4. Germany: Zylinderselektive Lambdaregelung warm am Bandende hat fertig adaptiert = English: Cylinder-selective lambda control warm at the end of the conveyor has already adapted RIGHT 1. Germany: Laufruhe Abgleich am bandende hat additiv adaptiert = English: Smooth running adjustment at the end of the belt has been adapted additively RIGHT 2. Germany: Laufruheabgleich am bandende hat den faktor adaptiert English: Smooth running adjustment at the end of the conveyor has adapted the factor RIGHT 3. @@JaniVoutilainen Thank you. I have come back to this after a few months (I have not been driving because of lockdown). Now I have done 1000 miles since I reset the adaptions. When I return from a journey with the engine running I have 5 black dots. Right 4 is not black. Car is running good. Is this ok or do I need to 're do the adaption process? I have 175mg sulphized value. No fault codes. Before this I had 30E9 aged catalyst. The sensor had a fault so I have repaired the sensor, used some cataclean then updated ECU software and registered a new catalyst and reset adaptions.

Mikä voi aiheuttaa N43 kun Learnbit valikossa ei halua lukita tuota sylinterikohtaista lambdan lämpimänä arvoa? Auto toimi täydellisesti noin 2 viikkoa sitten kun vaihdettu NOXEM autoon kiinni. Nyt sitten hukannut tuon "Zylinderselekrive lambdaregelerung warm ist nötig".

What is the procedure for N46? In my adaptations menu I don't have as many options as yours does for the MSV80

Sorry, I am not that pro with N46 engine. N46 is older motor model than N43. The N43 engine is a pretty interesting package with direct injector adaptations. It took me a long time to learn its life.

Very informative, I also do it. You should get more views. I know that's mainly instruxtions rom bimmerprofs. Maybe you are the one who is bimmerprofs. IDK. Also, good to see. Do you have slight vibrations on cold start? Rpm is stable, but when I put my hand on the gear switch I feel sometimes some vibrations not like smooth.

Thanks! I'm just a guy who wants to learn to understand the N43 engine; I a'm not from Bimmerprofs. 😊 Right now, the engine is running really smoothly and fine. I have a problem with the fault code 30EA which will cause problems at some point / in the future, such that after starting the engine runs unevenly especially cold etc. It is important that the engine adaptations and the Nox system are in order with this engine! With these tests, I want to make sure that I do not unnecessarily replace expensive parts like a Nox catalyst or a Nox sensor. It would appear that the Nox catalyst is beginning to lose its effectiveness…

@@JaniVoutilainen I also have this annoying code 30ea once in a while. It's only when counter of sulphur is high. After engine readaptation it sets to 0 anyway. Once I had counter very low, like 50. And then it jumped to 3500 in the same day!! I couldn't be arsed to drive and perform desulfation sessions. Also, engine became shaky at idle. I feel like there is some bug in a program of ecu. So, you also have slight vibrations on cold start? Even after doing all repairs. I feel like that's normal then. I checked lamdaa and rpm they don't fluctuate much. After, it's warm, all good,better at least. With lamda 2.0 it's even better. Maybe that's how it should be. Thanks again for your videos.

Do you have any DTC's? How long did you run the adaptation run? Personally, I did four about 15-minute runs with about 10-minute idle sessions. And during the last run, all the necessary adaptations were made.

Any idea why line 4 in F5/F6 menu "Additiver Adaptationsfaktor Bank 1" is still 0.00 mg/stk?

I think this is related to the motor control unit (DME) version. As a result, that information is not available. ../F5/F6 in the menu when you scroll to the bottom line where you can find offset type adaptations witch should be -0.99 .. +0.99 mg / stk (N43) range and different from 0.00.

My injector on cylinder 4 was leaking so I had on every cold start DME light show up. Had do shutoff and restart engine to get rid of it. I checked all spark plugs, after let em sit over night. Only one was wett and smelled fuel on it. So i replaced the injector on cylinder 4 from index 08 to 11. So far so good. No more DME light pops up, but the engine still shakes a bit on cold starts and also sounds a bit strange the first 10 seconds, like dull missfires. I still have some missfire errors ine the DME on cylinder 4 i allready changed all spark plugs and coils.. Any idea ? After let the car run 1 min all getting better no shaking and stable idle and feels great on driveing ! Thank you

The wife's car started having the same problems in exactly the same way as your car. Replacing plugs and ignition coils did not help either. ISTA-D instructed me to replace all 4 fuel injectors with new ones. For a long time I was thinking about replacing them because I didn't want to invest over 1000 euros. And luckily I didn't replace them as the end result was that there was nothing wrong with the fuel injectors becouse the head gasket had broken between the 3rd and 4th cylinders which caused the pressures to fail and caused all these misfires. I recommend that you do a cylinder bypass test on each cylinder. You will need an air compressor and a cylinder leak tester. The local workshop will also be able to do that testing. I also recommend finding out that the NOx sensor is OK. If it is not, then it can cause just this problem too. If the fault is not in the spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel injectors, fuel supply and NOx system is ok and there is no intake leakage or exhaust leakage then the fault must be mechanical.

you need to change all injectors in the same bank to index11. mine also N53, same issue on cylinder 3. changed all bank 1 yesterday, running smooth as silk..

Hi Jani, I would like to know your opinion: I have had bad waterpump and one injector was KO. Both are new. For safe I replaced also NOx senzor. No fault codes. But the engine is still running on homogenous mode (lambda 1) and doesnt switch into stratified mode. Do you think that adaptation can solve it?

I recommend doing so! And especially when you replace the new NoX sensor, otherwise stratified-mode will not go on and problems will start over time! First, run NOx Catalytic Converter forced clean. Next, reset the engine adaptations and lastly, perform an adaptation run for the engine.

@@JaniVoutilainen Hi, so i did it by your template. But I must did something wrong or diferent. I went 4x test drive by your template but didnt reach 6x black point..when I turn off the engine, wait till sleep and start it up the enginer run i emergency. And there are some fault codes in memory. If I erase it, the engine run normal. Switching into stratified mode and keep it for 18s, switch to the homogenous and back again stratified..

@@Krtek004 Hi! For example, if a faulty NoX sensor has been driven for at least a year, you may need to run more of these adaptation runs. For example, I replaced my car with a new NoX sensor a week ago. I also didn’t get that 6th ball black in four runs. Eventually it also adapted when I ran a total of 8 times;) The adaptation run can continue even the next day ... It is really important that these six adaptations are done so that the engine works as it should. It is a good idea to check after each run that there are no fault codes in the fault memory in DME module. If so, they need to be reset and then only continue driving. Otherwise, the adaptations will not be completed

It took me more than 3 hours and 100km.., but i done it :) Fault code check after / before ride.., once I had to use slowly 3x press the accelerator method. Every ride had 15-20 minutes.. but end of the night its done. Yesterday at the morning, when I started up, the engine ran smoothly. I did 300km drive without any problem. I did one part of the journey with 110 km/h speed with 7,1l/100 consuption. Avg. consuption for 600km after refueling the tank was 8,3l/100 with avg.speed 53km/h (including highway 130 gps speed on cruise control, district road, cities etc). So there's is about 20% decrease in fuel consumption in the same drive style.
