With the release of Pokemon HOME, one important task that a lot of people are focusing on is completing a living national dex that they can use for future games, as well as some cool in-game rewards. This process has become increasingly difficult over the years, but what does it take to catch them all? Today we're going to find out how easily you can complete the living National Dex in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Hey if you're just watching this video after March, the requirements for Magearna now don't require having a full living dex in your Pokemon HOME. You just need to have a completed Pokedex and it will unlock! You don't need all the alternate forms, but just make sure to check if all your Pokemon are being registered in your HOME Pokedex :)

With BDSP, I finally feel like this is achievable again. Getting the Gen 5-6 Pokémon I'm missing will be difficult still, but I should easily complete Gen 1-4 after Home is working in BDSP. And I have 7-8 finished already. Update to this: My local library carries Pokémon Y, Omega Ruby, and White 2. Between all of those, I was able to grind through and get everything I was missing filled in. Now I'm just waiting on HOME support for BDSP and PLA to make it official. In the meantime, I'm nearly through my 2nd PLA run to get both Formes of Enamorus.

Yup, this is right. BDSP has all the pokemon from gens 1 through 4, in its Nat dex, so it is much easier than it was before.

Some QOL improvements I'm seeing in the last two years: - You don't need to play both USUM, thanks to SWSH - Crown Tundra - Dynamax Adventures - Getting Meltan and Melmetal is much easier thanks to the Melmetal reward in HOME, taking a day instead of a month - You don't need to play Pokémon Colosseum (GCN) for Jirachi, thanks to BDSP save file gifts (SWSH save) - You don't need to buy a Pokeball Plus for Mew, thanks to BDSP save file gifts (Lets GO save) - You don't need to play Pokémon Ranger (DS) for Manaphy and Phione, thanks to Legends Arceus - You don't need to play DPPt for Darkrai, Shaymin and Arecus preforming the tweaking glitch, you can now play Legends Arceus to get them - Arceus main story - Darkrai BDSP save - Shaymin SWSH save - Keldeo is now available in SWSH - Crown Tundra (after post game of SWSH) - Victini, Meloetta, Genesect all still require the mystery gift download spoof (or events/trades) - Diance, Hoopa, Volcannon, Marshadow, and Zeraora are completely unavailable (without events or trades)

If we include Pokémon Go: Genesect is obtainable at varying points of the year and Hoopa was in Elite Raids. Outside a few mythicals, the only ones missing from the Switch Era are the Elemental Chimps, Zebstrika and I think one or two other Unova lines at the moment (with Zebstrika returning in DLC for ScarVo.)

ah yes, the cute charm glitch... btw for anyone vurious on how this works, its because cute charm is broken and only selects for a VERY limited list of pvs (personality values)(as in one per nature) and if you dont do the set up you will never get a shiny pokemon while cute charm is in effect

(I'm a little behind on keeping track of my progress) Edit: 7/16/2020 As of this date, I have 34.49% of the National Pokedex completed Edit: 1/31/2021 - It’s been awhile! But as of this date, I have 65.96% of the National Pokédex completed! Edit: 5/3/2021 - it’s been a few months, and I’ve gotten really busy with life, but I’ve had chances to grind here and there. So, as if this date, I have 82.02% of the National Pokédex completed. I’m getting so close! I’ll keep you guys updated. 😄

For me I started my living dex all the way back in Gen IV so it’s pretty much been smooth sailing since outside of shinies and and HAs which at least now the latter is nigh on a non-issue thanks to the ability patch (besides all the Pokémon left that are stuck at Galar border patrol.)

Note: If anyone trying the tweaking in do to get shaymin, Darkrai or arceus, you should catch them in Pokemon diamond, not pearl version. Legit Darkrai and Arceus is only transferable to pokebank if caught in diamond version. For Darkrai, you need to upgrade it to level 50 in diamond and forget pursuit. For arceus, upgrade it to level 100 in diamond and caught outside of Hall of Origin (Mystery Zone or Jubilife City). Shaymin does not transfer though, you can use a glitch to get it in platinum (original event). Shiny Arceus or Darkrai may not transfer into pokebank, using a special device works. If you are trying this, you should use the latest route make by retire, combining wrong warp by union room and fake sinnohs in the void, and never disables your step counter, making the route hardly fail.

I tried transferring darkrai, shaymin, and arceus I got from a friend long ago from Platinum to Black last month and only Darkrai and Arceus were allowed to transfer through pokebank. Guess he got them all in diamond. If you have any knowledge on how to get the shaymin through, that would be delightful

You should really just do it in Platinum as that is the only game that got the Members Card and Oaks Letter and then not transfer Hall of Origin Arceus at all. That’s if you want legal Pokémon anyway. If there are workarounds to make Bank and Home not flag them then that’s fair enough but there’s no telling whether they won’t patch that in future iterations.

That's so fucking random, but to be fair. If you have access to legends arceus, you can technically catch darkrai manaphy and arceus in legends, as well as phione, without even breeding. Since catch rates are also different in legends, I think that would be less tedious. Not to mention if you get the genie trio there, less work for gen 5

I actually started doing this. I finished my living dex last year and now I’m working on collecting all the hidden abilities that I can. It’s a slow process. Currently, I’m getting as many friend safaris as I can because those are the easiest ones to get.

Solid video man. Last year I started my live dex collection when HOME opened up. I made the choice to modify and make a personal ruleset: - I have to catch a Pokémon from the earliest gen that it is available to me, if for some reason I absolutely can’t catch, breeding is okay. - every Pokémon has to have my OT or be an event Pokémon as a place marker. I borrowed Sapphire, Black, White2, and Y from a friend, owned moon and platinum, downloaded red and silver digitally, and picked up a copy of ultra sun. With a 3DS and DS, I’ve been having lots fun hunting chronologically and sending everything from the transporter to bank and soon bank to home. It’s hard to say if the bank will stick around much longer and so the idea of collecting old pokes from their oldest generations and moving them to the home gives me sense of closure to the hand helds dying off.

Before I start watching the video I have a story for you: Last week I was watching your challenge for Ruby/Sapphire and I decided to start playing the later just because the Pick Up Zigzagoon strategy sounded like a lot of fun. During my play, I beated Wattson and I decided to return to the second route for a Ralts. I found one and after I captured it, I found another one right away but it was a SHINY! I captured the shiny but the nature was Impish :'(. Then I was training a Rhyhorn and I returned to the tree city to cure myself and suddenly I got Pokérus! I was like "this file is really wild... I bet I can find a Feebas very easily" So I was hunting for a Feebas and wild SHINY Carvahna appeared! I found the Feebas later, on an easy spot but the Carvahna was funny. I have never captured two full odds shinies before (I found Pokérus before, that does not impress me that much lol). So I have to thank you for the wild experience lol.

I've never had shinies, on the other hand lol I captured a shiny Linoone when I was younger, but I lost that game :/

An important thing to mention is that with the upcoming sword and shield DLC, it's likely that you'll need a lot less games/consoles to catch em all, as 200+ old Pokemon will be obtainable. You'll need it anyway to catch the new DLC exclusive Pokemon so I would just wait until those are out if time and money are more important than getting this done asap

I actually am in the process of doing this, thanks for the guide! This will help a lot. I also need to thank you for the professor oak challenges for one very important reason. I decided to do one in Emerald as it is my favorite. I made it through the game and started collecting the post game legendaries. I used the master ball on the roaming one then went to kyogre. It ended up fainting but no big deal, it was the first encounter and took all of 5 turns. The very next encounter it was SHINY!!! A natural shiny kyogre with no master ball and a possibility that it could recoil itself to death. Luckily it actually used rest and I was able to catch it before it started to struggle. It was the proudest moment of my pokemon experience. It wouldn't have happened if I didn't decide to do an oak run like a crazy person. Thank you.

As Johnstone said in the video, Celebi can be obtained by buying and beating Pokemon Crystal, and Arceus can be gotten through the method discussed in the Jrose video mentioned for the Gen V pokemon (since that method's for both Gen IV and V) as long as you have access to a router that supports WEP-encryption for security, since Gen IV isn't compatible with WPA. And [Redacted], one of those two gens also had a Mew distribution available, so that video could help you, as well. That's how I got my Mew.

Before watching this, I gotta flex real hard: I have the Living National Dex in Home. All 890. I played every gen, not necessarily in order but casually. And then one day in UltraMoon? I was like: Let's do it. I traded everything up. Missing were about 50-100 Pokémon. Traded, evolved and more and... 890. Dope. I attended most of the events like Celebi for HG/SS or the arceus distribution. It felt good. For SWSH I just got a living dex of the new Pokémon. And then, the day Home got out... I merged it. Felt good. I got about 1800 Pokémon with 3 boxes of legendaries too

Okay so 1. The Meltan boxes are now available every 3 days instead of 7. 2. The Manaphy egg is one per save file, not per cartridge. So you can erase the save file and get a new Manaphy egg from that. That's how people were shiny-hunting Manaphy for the longest time

Absolutely stellar, this already recently became my quest. I'm doing a couple different things though, A) completing a shiny Crystal Living dex, everything can be box glitch cloned and sent forward with perfect IVs, Hidden abilities, keep their bred shininess, and control their nature. While I want to finish gen 3-5 my major goals is to use them to get event and other software exclusive rare movesets like "Box Ruby and Sapphire" ones, dream radar therians etc, but I want to get ORAS/XY conpleted. Once they are done, passing them through gen 7 with just complete Alolan formes and exlusives, then into home/SwSh. This os going to be a great guide and have fun at the con!

Hey John, glad to finally have someone publish a guide for the living dex. I've been trying to make one myself, but ended up somehow being 2 pokemon short. Just one thing though, the spreadsheet says "No Mirage Areas" even though there are at several lines of Pokemon that can ONLY be found in Mirage areas (Glameow, Kricketot and Blitzle, as well as Tangela for Tangrowth as you've listed in the sheet.), which I discovered when making my document as avoiding Mirage Areas forces trading or adding Black/White to the game list. Is this a mistake?

I haven't looked at the list, so I don't know if he cited a different game for it., but Crystal works for Tangela. Tangela's available on Routes 21, 28(just south of Pallet), 44(the grass in the middle of the water), and Mt. Silver. And Gen VII should be capable of evolving it.

@@S.S.1993 Thankfully I think I have all of the mythicals from the 20th anni events. Besides those though, Mew can be gotten in Let's Go if you have a new Poke Ball Plus, or you can get Mew and Jirachi in BDSP. Celebi can be gotten in VC Crystal. Deoxys can be caught in ORAS. All of the Gen 4 myths can be caught in Legends. Magearna is just scanning a QR Code, and Meltan/Melmetal are just a lot of grinding in GO. That leaves Gen 5, 6, and most of 7 still locked behind events, and also Zarude. Zarude was actually the only mythical I had issues with, since I lost my copy of Shield around the time of that event, but luckily I got the event one in GO, so I just transferred that one. Still, 10 Pokemon being locked solely behind old events kinda sucks. At least with the newer save data ones, you can always have access to those.

17:41 once you put your hands into the glitch you can use glitzer popping glitch in emerald to get any pokemon in gen3(you need to perform another glitch called ACE to obtain mew and deoxys that obey you)

Melmetal became a lot easier to obtain in GO since the last shiny meltan event. You can now use the box ever 3 days instead of 7. Also, the Serebii discord has a trade chat room and I find it to be the most active at the time of this comment.

16:38 I actually checked pokemon go to get the melmetal my dex was missing about a week ago and they reduced the cooldown time to 3 days. You get approx. 15-20 meltan per box so it should be easier than it was on release

Updates for the current age now that Pokemon Diamond and Pearl have remakes. These remakes are able to get the three events for the last mythicals, but these are timed events so if you want a true living Dex on Pokemon Home, you'd better hurry! The most important thing is that your game must have you registered in the Hall of Fame, aka you must beat Cynthia the first time and complete the Pokemon League challenge. (1) Darkrai: You need to use the Mystery Gift feature in your menu between April 1, 2022 and May 1, 2022, because that is when the moon is new. You will get the Member's Card which you use to enter the hospice in Canalave City which teleports you to Newmoon Island where you can catch a wild Darkrai at Level 30. (2) Shaymin: Right now you can use the BDSP Mystery Gift to get Oak's Letter. Once you become Champion, a new path in Victory Road leads to a spot called Route 224, where there is a rock at the end. If you have Oak's Letter, Oak will be there and the route will open to a meadow where you can catch a Level 15 Shaymin. (3) Arceus. This is the hardest one yet. * You MUST have a copy of Pokemon Legends Arceus and completed ALL of the missions in the game, including the bullet hell battle with Arceus. That save MUST be on the same Switch as your Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl save! * Once you complete the Arceus battle (the final mission) in Legends Arceus and save your game, go to your Diamond/Pearl save and go back to your bedroom and check the bed. The game will read your Legends Arceus save and, if you got 100 missions done, this game will have a cutscene and you will get the Azure Flute, which is needed on Spear Pillar(where you captured the box legendary) to summon a stairway to the Hall of Origin, where, surprise, Arceus is waiting to be captured. He is the highest level wild Pokemon ever(Level EIGHTY) so you should use a Master Ball on it if you have one. ;) (Note: Arceus is the only one of these trio which is not in a timed event, but you will need another game save to get the Azure Flute.)

Some feedback to your spreadsheet that would REALLY upgrade the usability of it; 1. Link the checkboxes between pages 2. Add the numbers from the national dex to the list, at least in page 1 or create a new page with this list. With this, the usage would not only be easier, but also be possible to see the national dex in numerical sorted fashion, since that is how most will store their pokemon it is much easier to crosscheck between the list and your boxes. Aside from that; this resource is immensely useful and I salute you for your work.

I think after Arceus there are only something like 30 lines (excluding legendaries) that you can't catch on the Switch with one copy each of either LGPE, SwSh, BDSP and Arceus and a decent trading group. Most of them are obviously post Gen 4. I get that Bank is more convenient than we had before, but completing the dex only became fun for me after SwSh. If they keep the trade evo methods from Arceus it's even better. It would be so neat if SV tidied the rest of the list up (and put any of the missing legendaries in something like dens).

pokemon go and soon bdsp make this task so much easier, bdsp especially on account of every gen 1-4 pokemon being catchable in them. you don’t even need to trade or reset for different starters, it’s great!
