NYC is very expensive but one good thing is they have tons of restaurants at different price points. I live in DC right now and there has been an explosion of very high end dining and cocktail bars. Sometimes you don’t want to go to a fast food or fast casual place, but want a sit down restaurant but don’t want to completely break the bank. Harder to find more moderate places here. Never had that problem in NYC especially in Brooklyn and the East Village. You have so many options at all price points.

Cost of eating was reasonable during my last NY visit. The alcohol is what shocked me. $16 cocktails is what I'd expect at a high priced concert. $5 beer and $6-$8 cocktails are bar prices here (Kansas City). 4 people having a couple drinks was automatically $150. Absolutely nuts.

I live in NYC, avocados 🥑 on sale this week 55 cents each, large eggs $4 /dozen, jumbo eggs $6.50/dozen. Thick cut center cut pork chops $2.49/lb this week. One bedroom, 750 square feet I pay about $1400 which includes electric, gas, and water. Cell phone is about $25/month. I spend about $6 a week on laundry. The building I live in has a laundromat and they are changing machines soon so it might go up.

Currently in NYC from the Uk staying in Hell’s Kitchen and Omg the cost of everything 😮 the exchange rate is almost at £1. -$1 at the moment so we really notice it. Back home 4 pints of milk £1.15, a loaf of bread £1, my unlimited mobile phone which I can use anywhere in Europe £12.99 per month! Cocktails £6 to maybe £10. Despite watching most of your videos and sticking to the “do not doos” and feeling pretty savie I feel like they see us coming at every juncture - the hotdog sellers charging us $6 a hotdog or doubling the prices of slices 🤣🤣. But I do have to say thank you thank you for the China town tips - today we went to “Fried Dumplings” and agreed it was the best $5 we’ve spent since we got here 👌👌 we’re also taking your advice on Beasts and Butterflies tonight xxx

Well said. I live in another high-cost urban area, and when I retired (pre-telework era) so many people asked me if I was planning to move to a lower cost area. I said no because of all the cultural and transportation amenities I am close to. That was the value to me. Yeah I would save a few $ moving to a less expensive area, but it wouldn't be "worth" it to me in terms of my current quality of life.

Wow, those rent numbers are a bit shocking, even though I used to live in New York years ago. I have a house right in downtown Toronto with a front and back yard and separate garage, 2 1/2 storeys, 3 bedrooms and office and a basement and my mortgage is $1,400/month CDN. Plus utilities and property tax of course. I feel very lucky to own land - the lot is 15'x115'. During Covid lockdown having a backyard and a front porch and a park next door was truly a benefit. Of course housing prices have gone up since I purchased in 2005 and many people choose to go with a condo unit. That health insurance number is crazy too. What Ontario doesn't cover for health care (it covers a lot) luckily my partner has a great plan that covers us both through his office. Prescriptions are usually free or a few bucks, dental and eye exams are covered, and surprisingly massage therapy. Otherwise the province covers doctors, emergency, telehealth services etc through our taxes, no matter your income, you just need an Ontario health card or if you are down on your luck without a card (home address) there are free clinics. The NYC grocery prices seem pretty much on par (same or similar numbers but in Canadian dollars). I don't have a car, but if I add up the occasional Uber trip, and then public transit, no comparison - so much less cost. Toronto transit sometimes leaves something to be desired (crowded at rush hour, sometimes a streetcar takes a while etc), but not bad. I think it is currently $3.20 CDN per trip and you can transfer free within the system within 2 hours. Overall, if you are buying a first house and want to be in downtown Toronto, it will cost a pretty penny especially if you need to renovate and seems to be further and further out of the reach of young couples, which is why so many new condos are being built. Still, Toronto is amazing, but if I could afford it I am always a bit of a New Yorker at heart. By the by, I have friends in Park Slope and I am sure you know this (and congratulations!) apply for kindergarten and schools really early if you haven't already! I was told that it can really be a long wait list for a school near you that you like. Anyway, sorry for rambling.

$10 eggs, i think I saw $6-5 in some more expensive places in Denver back in like November. Also there was eggs for $1.99 at sprouts in Denver. At the time eggs was $4-5 in Goodland ks. Crazy how location and city vs. rule can be!

As a Canadian living in BC, the costs aren't shocking to me, but instead on par with here. Of course, we don't have basic health insurance costs (dental and optical aren't covered by provincial Medicare) and our car insurance is much lower(at least mine is). The baby is adorable.

I’m in Ottawa and I thought the same when I visited last, pretty on par , aside from the rent/housing prices and insurances. NYC is my favourite city to visit.

I'm in Los Angeles & costs are about the same, especially groceries. You got a good deal on rent for apartment. Car insurance? Wow!! That's a lot. I guess they don't want people to own a car charging that much! That's crazy!

You are a paying a good 2 to 4 times, the amount we do in the UK, occasionally more for quite a few groceries items. Thankfully not all item have this big a price gap.

I won't be able to look at my TD Bank parking lot again without thinking about pizza, so thanks! 😆 As for one of the costs - I'm in British Columbia and my car insurance for the year was $1151 CDN, about $864 U.S. I'm sure it's cheaper in other parts of Canada, but for a year that's not bad.

Depends on the car and the person. How long is a piece of string ? I have a V8 sports car in Sydney ant it costs me $1500 a year to insure... if i had a 4cyl hatch it would be $500.....

Almost everything is similar in price here in Puebla, maybe a dollar cheaper here, but, I have IMSS (the national insurance) and I pay like 15 dollars a month, but it is according to income, so lower income lower rate, no copays, no deductibles, bendito sea el IMSS.
