I worked at a quick lube through college. One day I was in the pit, a ricer mid 90s prelude came in, I pulled the plug on the pan and not a single drop of oil came out. He drove it there and left it outside idling. He had no idea how, we were all baffled. It sounded a little noisy but nothing out of the ordinary. A few years ago my sister, who’s an imbecile, had a 2004 Camry and she called me to see if I could look at her car because it was making a strange noise. I was outside and could hear what sounded like a diesel freight train approaching but I don’t live near railroad tracks. When she got to my house it was obvious the car had no oil in it. I yelled at her for driving the car that way and told her she wrecked the engine. I put oil in it and she left. About 6 months later she stopped by again with the same Camry and I asked if she got the engine replaced. She said no she hadn’t done anything to it since the last time I put oil in it. She obviously proved me wrong about the engine being ruined. She’s my sister, I love her, but she’s a complete moron.

Actually on that generation 02-06 camry the intake has baffles inside that come lose and make the car sound like a diesel. Usually those Camrys don't use much oil, unless the valve seals are shot.

@@GRosa250 actually the oil consumption on the 2AZ issues started with the 07 camry. They had changed compression and piston rings, oil passages in that generation of the 2azfe for performance. The 2AZfe in the 02-06 were pretty solid. Sounds like your sisters car had a rough life. :)

that was hilarious! im 33 now and i know my childhood friend is still driving around his parents (then new) 95 toyota camry so this is getting shared with him. He had a similar experience trying to drive it off road camping in 2012 an cracked his oil pan. Drove it about 15 miles home the next day. Didn't realize it had cracked until he went to go to work two days later and noticed the oil spot on the driveway. We repaired it and its STILL DRIVING TODAY!!

I forgot to mention that the springs broke at around 200,340k

Oh god, I had one of these, a 1992, and it ran FOREVER. Sold it with about 170k miles, and my friend who bought it drove it past 250k. It's probably still going today... somewhere. I grew up in a Toyota exclusive family, and never understood how unreliable other car brands could be until I decided to stray away and try something else. To this day, I think Toyota still holds the crown for reliability.

I've never personally seen any significant rust on the frame of a Toyota product, but I keep all my cars garaged and wash them frequently. So, I guess what I'm saying is, how bad are their frames relative to other car manufacturers? That isn't something I can answer, but given how long most Toyota products last, they don't look all that bad to me. A friend of mine is driving around a 300k+ Highlander. Never garaged, been through nearly 20 Chicago winters, still going strong. In my family I've seen several Camry's, an Avalon, and a Celica do 150-200k miles and no significant rust. Maybe it's more about how the car is treated?

this product he used, i believe that it was... a finnish product called RVS. as in the video he says "new miracle oil additive"... ITS NOT OIL ADDITIVE. and also he did the treatment wrong... he used old oil to make the treatment and thats probably biggest thing he did wrong, it takes a lot of more driving to complete the treatment with old oil than new oil because its full of shit already. they did over 4000 miles on civic without oil and with 206 peugeot over 11 000km in finland. also this product is used a lot in drag racing and other motor sport and it is proofed to be working. on racing engines they last much longer before they need to change bearings... i use this product too in my 70's Lada, i had low pressure in 4th cylinder, after treatment and driving it for 2 weeks daily, the pressure on that same cylinder raised from 8bar up to 10,5bar. also this stuff does not drain off with the oil when changing oil... as he says it is not recommended to run without oil even with that miracle "additive", and thats because engines are different. also again his treatment went badly wrong

I had a 2001 V6, all leather sunroof.. loaded. It had 215k miles when I bought it. Had it for 3 years. Only ever changed the tires, brakes and gas filler tube in those 3 years. When I sold it there was almost 240k on it. I sold it for $200 bucks so my buddy could demolition derby it. He ended up coming in second place after 3 events. It still ran (ish) but wouldn't drive. These cars are something special, if it wasn't so rusted out I wouldn't of sold it. But the rust would of never passed NY inspection

That last advice, at least half a quart of oil in it. I had a 87 Corolla with 380,000km on the clock. My GF at the time had taken over driving it as I had another car and I had taught her about maintenance and checking the oil, so it was her responsibility. She came home one day and mentioned that the oil light had flickered on. I asked if it was while idling at the lights thinking maybe the oil was low and the pump was getting tired. Nope. At 80kmh on the highway…. Decided whelp, oil change time. Got 400ml of oil out of the sump and that was it. Somehow, it wasn’t glitterfest. New oil and sent her on her way. She put another 50,000km on it before we sold it. Soldiered on like a champ as if nothing happened.

This was awseome. Unfortunately it didnt make it long with no oil. But you discovered it was hanging on by half a quart before you removed the pan. Thats still a testament to how good the motor is! Not many engines would do that. This proves how well Toyota(and Honda) built cars in the 90s. I wouldn't attempt this with a new one though lol.

Those things last forever! I have a silver 1993 Camry wagon with a 3VZ-FE with about 257,000 miles on its original engine and counting. Also, it has its original AC and Transmission. The only problem was that the exhaust needed to be fixed because it was noisy. Everything else was just oil changes. Best car ever! Do this with a Pontiac Sunbird and see how long it lasts!

Funny story story for you (I also live in the Chicagoland area). A guy I used to know from my old job had a 96 Toyota. He sold it and got a Pontiac vibe or something. Then crashed it. Bought the 96 Toyota back from the same guy for more money than it was before and he had nothing but problems with it. But is also had 360,000 miles on it

Best cars ever made. I want to get another one. Bought it with 240k miles and had it totalled at 290k..The engine and transmission are bulletproof to 300k. Mine still worked like a charm. Only downside? Horsepower isn't exactly generous in the 4cyl.

Off topic, but I still feel it's relevant. Couldn't help but comment cause I got so excited when I saw the title and description (maybe this fact should be cause for embarrassment). Anyways, seven or eight years ago I was given a 1996 Toyota Corolla for free after my car got stolen, which I brought from closer to 300k miles to closer to 400k miles during my 1+ year of ownership. I had to drive it at least 90 miles highway driving and 20 miles city driving every day through NJ/NY. The thing needed a few quarts of oil every couple of days. The transmission fluid appeared to completely drain about once a week, though this was for some reason slightly variable. I was absolutely not allowed to park it in any of my friend's or family's driveways as huge stains would quickly appear if there was any fluid in it. I'm pretty sure it was a mobile EPA disaster and led to the death of an old pine tree I would park under at home instead of the shared driveway (RIP). Money was super tight, and what I could save was only going to a new car. This led to me having to decide whether my car was going to get oil/TF or enough gas to get home. To my shock an almost complete lack of lubricants seemed to have no effect on what I began to refer to as a my "miracle of mid-90's Japanese engineering." I would go weeks without adding oil or transmission fluid, there must have only been tablespoons in there, driving an hour at 80 mph one way and maybe an hour in stop-and-go on the way back. Didn't show any signs of excessive wear or heat, no weird noises or unusual vibrations, though I guess something must have been getting damaged. Plus, I was even getting about 33 mpg at times. I don't know for sure since I haven't tried, but I imagine other cars would quickly succumb to this kind of abuse. I was actually sad to let it go, even though the power steering was completely broken since day one, as well as the exhaust which meant it was loud and would fill with fumes if I got completely stuck in traffic. I did spend a few hours shooting hockey pucks at it with friends before sending it off to the junkyard, so it was a fond farewell. Anyways, thanks for the awesome video and bringing back some memories.

When I worked in shops in high school, these cars would come in along with other mid to late 90's Hondas and Toyotas, covered in oil underneath and a lot of times nothing more than a quart or so would drain out. 100K+ miles, we would note it on RO, change the oil and send it. Never an issue, cars nowadays would never last.
