If you decide to go with any other color, I have always been a fan of the burnt orange Sunset Pearlescent M03 of the final generation eclipse. Maybe even a bit of black accents if you add any body mods. Good luck with the build, it's was my original dream car growing up. Even had a red Talon of the same gen. Excited to see where you take this build.

Super excited for this new build series Alex! I had a 1st gen DSM that I fully built years ago. I have one hard lesson I want to pass on to you. Upgrade the PCV / crankcase ventilation prior to upping the boost or upgrading the turbo. The factory system is too small and it will back pressurise the oil return on the turbo! I went through 2 turbos because of this. this can also be the reason you don't have an oil dipstick as they typically pop off from the crankcase pressure. Good luck👍

For that thing to have 230k+ miles on it and be in THAT good of condition means that the previous owner fucking adored that car and gave it the best possible care for all those years. Like its impossibly rare to see someone care for such a car to that level for that long.

And now it’s gonna be modded to shit with body mods that don’t belong on that year car, make too much power for it to handle (watch the trans and axles with that mileage go), and be lowered and look stupid. If the owner watches this it will be sad. He kept it so original just for it to fall into what he had hoped would be a responsible restoration type of owner. Plus at 42:10 he freaking dropped the clutch with the unknown howling… this thing is already getting beat on more than it has since the previous owner had it.

Couple of thoughts for a 'mature build' as you mentioned: 1. Go for maximum drivability, at least over exaggerated looks/sounds. This could be a beautiful car 'for those who know'. I'd at least add a muffler and possibly also extra sound insulation to the interior, so you really want to take this car for a road trip. 2. Don't overspend as most of us wouldn't. Find best value upgrades and show us your options, considerations and choices. Your audience will appreciate it. (AP-coilovers are available for this car, as is a Holset turbo. Both will give you performance and reliability affordably. A Holset HX35W will get you your 500 HP reliably with acceptable EGT.) 3. Don't go crazy with the paint, make it elegant and stay far away from Fast and Furious styles. I'd be more thrilled about adjusting the gearbox and ratios to the new power output, than seeing the original body being mutilated. 4. Tires on a 90's car should have some meat, both for the visual aspect as for the way it drives. 18, 19 or 20" with 35-30-25% sidewalls would make the build immature. So go with 16" or 17" light alloys, combined with brakes that are a good fit with both. I'm interested to see what others think about this ...

Absolutely agree. These cars are not meant to follow the awful trendy TikTok wave of big wheels, slammed to the ground, tacky paints and whatever else. Ironically I owned a static LS400 that was 2 inches from the ground which I sold for a 1st gen Talon and your points mainly fall in line with my personal plans. They certainly deserve to be respected for what they are as a more mature tuner car that can look and perform beautifully if done right.

The front main seal is leaking and most likely has a groove in the crank where the seal is. It's common for a groove to be worn in it on higher mileage DSM's. The easiest way I've found to deal with it is to slide a micro sleeve over the snout.

One reason why the 4G63 is so good is because it's actually the engine from the older models of the Lancer Evolution of the same era. It's an engine designed for rally racing. Mitsubishi gave the Eclipse GS-R and GS-X the 4G63. The base model Eclipse GS and the Eclipse RS got a different engine that barely hit 90hp to the wheels. A basic commuter engine. I've always loved 4G63s. Because it's so similar to the Evolution engines, you can pretty easily swap in a true Evolution engine into the higher trimmed Eclipse models.

Umm, I have a 1990 Eagle Talon FWD Turbo that has been in my garage since 2001. It's completely original. There was a small dent in the front fender, and a small patch of rust on one quarter panel. I had the notion when I was younger, more ambitious, and "suffering" with OCD that I would rebuild it top to bottom but after a bit of tear down, life caught up to me and I stopped in my tracks. While catching up I obsessively bought tons of parts for that car, also bought and rolled another 1990 Eagle Talon AWD Turbo. Now both sit there, with lots of potential for resurrection into a completely "new" old car but no interest to ever finish. Any fans of this dude want to chat?

I have a black '93 Eclipse GS (N/T) manual sitting in my garage waiting for me to bring it back to life. I've owned it since '94 but many years ago it got hit in the front drv side and was set aside because I didn't have time to address it (turned out to be relatively minor damage). A couple years ago I got back into repairing it a bit but I think the ECU is dead now (infamous) so it's been sitting again waiting for me to dive back into it. I love the car and it's in practically like new condition inside (tinted windows really helped keep the interior from getting destroyed in the FL and SoCal environments - and was garage kept a majority of the years). Outside has some faded paint but might come back with some polishing. All stock too, not tortured and mutilated.... 134k miles. I love that car.. extremely fun to drive. I'll be watching this playlist for sure. Eager to see what you do with your DSM.

Congrats alex on a top purchase and future project/series. Thank god you didnt buy a rust bucket. Love it, looks like it's gonna shape up to be a good one. Absolutely yes, a grown up modification and restoration. Love the white, maybe make it a pearlescent white for a bit more something but not to much pearl. All the the mods you talk about are good and tasteful. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this. Hope the ford lightening gets an episode or two in between also.

There are also a few different versions of the 7 bolt. The early versions use a 360 degree thrust bearing like the 6 bolt blocks, and they moved the oil squirters from the bottom of the cylinders to the main saddles. The later 7 bolt blocks moved the squirters back to the cylinders and went with a 180 degree thrust bearing. Also, the 6 bolts use a 12mm head bolt with the 7's using an 11mm.

I had a 1981 Plymouth Sapporo made by Mitsubishi that I bought from my parent in 1986. Finding brake pads for that car was nearly impossible and when I did finally find them after calling everyone they were really expensive. Great car. 2.6 liter engine, 5-speed, rear wheel drive, 4 wheel disc. Not a lot of HP but a torque monster. Loved that car.

To stop crankwalk: 1. Use 6 bolt rods because they are wider. Then narrow each rod at the big end individually to match the crank journal in which it will be assigned to. You can assure a snug and perfect rod side clearance with the crank to prevent excessive oil loss due to centrifugal forces. 2. Resize the big end of the rod as most (not all) aftermarket rods are too loose with bearing clearance. 3. Use only the wider early style 6-bolt rod bearings as they tend to not only live longer and have more surface area, but they hold more oil in to prevent loss. 4. The crank oil passages are too large. So large that they can continue to feed oil to the rods as the mains don't get enough. Modify the passages so as to increase oil pressure at the mains yet still give the rods adequate oil to live a long and trouble free service life.

I had a bone stock 1990 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD that I bought back in 2010 for $2500. It had the ugliest wheels on it so the first thing I did was get some 2G DSM OEM wheels for it with new tires. I put a 2g turbo manifold on it, 2g "609" MAF, 660cc injectors, an Evo III B16G turbo, 3" downpipe and exhaust, a front mounted intercooler and piping, a 1G EEPROM ECU, and I had it tuned at 20 psi to make 348 awhp. It was alot of fun and it was very reliable.

My first job out of high school was at a Mitsubishi/ Nissan dealership in the late 90s. I was a porter, oil changer, part runner, basically whatever they needed and got to drive alot of these as well as the 3000gts ,300 zx , and occasionally 200sx. Such a fun job even though 7.50 an hour just wasn't enough to stick around but I still think back on all the cool cars I got to drive.

I had a '94 Eagle Talon TSI AWD bought new in '94. Thing was awesome. Wish I still had it but traded it for a new truck in '97. It topped out at 147 mph, had crazy acceleration and was fun to drive. I can't remember exactly which, but it rivaled the Viper in either 0-60 or the 1/4 times but was less than 1/2 the price. Still keep my eye out for 1 similar to this day. I almost bought the next generation (similar to this video) but didn't like how it felt sitting/driving at the time.

First and foremost, I love the car. I actually was still trying car sales as a career and sold Eagles during the first generation of these and sold a couple of the turbos. But, come on guys. Not only is it not JDM (Japanese Domestic Market). It was manufactured in, of all perfect places, Normal Illinois. 🤓. The JDM equivalent of this would be an FTO. Still looking forward to the build. These are a little harder to build as parts were fewer and farther between back then. I can’t imagine how tough it will be to get them now. Good luck and fun times. 🦵

Don't get a heavy clutch pressure plate. Get a twin disc setup if you want good power and to keep your crank happy. Also, keep an eye on your front lower control arms. Back in the day they had issues with the aluminum being weak in those (recalled). Don't expect to turn fast at low speeds and high rpms unless you figure out a way to make an mr2 or volvo electric power steering pump work. High rpm cutout assist in your steering will happen if you autocross it. Replace the radiator if it's stock. End tanks were garbage. Otherwise, these are fantastic. Had a 2g gst and about four 1g awds. Love dsms and hate they were never taken care of by most owners.

Saw the thumbnail and knew it was a 2g DSM :D. I picked mine up over a year ago and I love it, 8k is a great price in todays market for a running and driving unrotted GSX for sure! I paid around the same and the clutch was broken and i had to ship it to canada and do a lot more to it :) but I'm happy with my overall purchase it's definitely no sleeper! The prices will definitely go up, im surprised they're not as insane as the other japanese or JDM cars but they should go up slightly relatively to them too! Glad I bought it last year and not now!

Your oil return line repair gave me flashbacks. From experience: just cut out the flex section of your turbo oil return line and put a piece of hose there. Your repair likely further weakened that "accordion." I'm sure this is a temp fix before you go big turbo and braided oil line. Have fun! I miss the noises and smells from my 1g AWD.

$8K for a clean car that you have wanted since like forever-is a dream come true. Almost 240K(about distance to the moon) on the odometer sounds about right for a well maintained Japanese engine. Had '88 Mazda 323 til 2015(mostly outdoors in Florida) and took to dealer for 25th Anniversary and dealer said cylinders and valve train were in excellent condition. Not surprised if engine is original.

I miss my 1996 Eclipse Turbo SO much! Most fun to drive car ever! I loved spanking 99% of cars on the road before AWD was everywhere. Now this car will only keep up with and beat most but not all modern sports cars unless you max it out and strip it down to a racer (which I do not care for)

I had a '92 Plymouth Laser RS. It was the horribly awesome blue-green (aqua on the title) with the honeycomb wheels. Super sleeper!! I rebuild the 6 bolt, had it bored 20 over, balance shafts removed, cometic head gasket, arp head studs, lightweight flywheel, hd clutch, short shifter, 2g lifters, evo3 16g turbo, 2g wastegate, massive front mount (ran bumper cover only, removed bumper and support 😀), all hard piped, genuine HKS SSQV vented into atmosphere (with, imo the best sounding purple insert) 3in GM maft and afc Neo which I tuned (pre-google, pre-KZbin and pre- Fast and the Furious) with a PDA data logger and my Haynes book!!! 2 1/2 inch, no cat, to a magnaflow muffler, eibach pro kit (only 1 inch drop) all the energy suspension bushings, motor mounts, strut bars front and back, Yokohama tires. Stock interior with the silly auto seat belts, lol. Had to replace the passenger side seat bolts from friends not ready for the launch. You know your doing it right when the wipers turn on because the factory heavy wiper stock attached to the steering wheel is pulling G's. I was taking 5.0 Mustangs to Gapplebee before it was a thing, could also drop a gear and disappear on the highway going 60. OMG it was too much fun, but went into big debt always fixing on it. Then had a friend and original owner of a black, 5 speed, 1998 Nissan 240sx, offer to let me buy his car and I jumped on it so quickly... I ended up selling my Laser I spent over $10,000 on for $2500 to pay for the 240sx. Crazy stuff, keep up the good, clean, and adult work your doing, very nice, I love it.
