Another fun fact is that some of the locals there speak an interesting vernacular called Llanito (pronounced roughly "Yaneeto"), which is essentially Andalucian Spanish with a lot of English loanwords and code-switching. I've lived in Gibraltar all my life, so I'm very surprised to see this one! It was very well written. I disagree about the note that the "border checks at the end 2020 aren't any stronger". They have certainly become stronger for tourists or non nationals. Day trips from one to another aren't legal anymore, requiring tourists to show evidence of a hotel in Spain if leaving Gibraltar. This rule is subject to how the guards are feeling that day, as they tend to wave anyone through. Natives with a red identity cards are exempt.

But then again, among other things Gibraltar wasn't even allowed to have their own phone number prefix/independence because of a Spanish boycott up until 2008 which is just ridiculous. How can you unequivocally prove the land is Spanish? hahah that's ridiculous. Just because It belonged once belonged to Castile? What about Castilian mass expulsions and colonisation TWICE during reconquista?? What about the "native" moors? Or is it because it is within the Iberian Peninsula? Then the Portuguese and Andorrans can also lay claim. Or is because it's next to Spain? Then Portugal can also lay claim on all of Spain. You also show an incredible deal of ignorance... While Gibraltarians (70% of the total population) are British nationals, they aren't ethnic British. Its best comparable to another territory right across from it: Ceuta. It borders another foreign nation, but is culturally a part of the owner in a way that would make them joining the mainland preposterous

Ceuta was Spanish before Morocco even existed as a country, it wasn’t stolen from Morocco. The uk people kicked the Spaniards out so obviously they preferred to stay British.

Lmao at the Spanish trying to justify their own colonies. The local people of Ceuta and Mellila were killed or conquered and a Spanish population was planted. That's definitely colonialism... Also I love the idea of a people ruling themselves = colony, but a people being ruled from elsewhere = free. Spanish hypocrisy is some of my favourite 🤣🤣🤣
@kingrafboss2 жыл бұрын
I don't know why the british stuck their noses on the Spanish Succession on the first place, less why the heck would they get a colony for it and even less why they are still keeping it nowdays. But I guess that if u ask and indian, an egyptian, an argentinian... they would ask the same. British being british, is the way they are.

Ceuta and Melilla? You forgot: Alhucemas, Islas de Chafarinas, Penon de Velez de la Gomera! All Spanish Territory. They are part of Andalucia for administration purposes, coming under Cadiz. The elect a representative to the Spanish Parliament, the Guardia Nacional are posted to the areas, as are the Aduana - Customs Officers. Do you really think Spain will give them up, if it managed to control Gibraltar? You have more chance of walking backwards to Betelguise in your birthday suit, turning round and returning back to Earth. It shouldn't take you very long as its about 600 light years away!
@solgerWhyIsThereAnAtItLooksBad2 жыл бұрын
They probably only claim Gibraltar as giving up could make them look weak, despite it being hypocritical as they have their own (albeit larger) Gibralter’s right across the strait
@leviton65522 жыл бұрын
All good, however, you forgot to mention that the UK expanded the territory of Gibraltar (twice) in breach of the Treaty of Utrecht. Also the treaty is a lifetime lease to the British but the jurisdiction of the territory was never given to the British. Finally Gibraltar is included by the UN in the list of territories to decolonize, however an independent Gibraltar would go against the treaty so it can only be British or Spanish
