DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent. I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Fun fact: in Gen 7 OU before Dugtrio was banned, Decidueye was the only Pokemon capable of learning a trapping move + U-turn + Smack Down. You could EV and IV it to be slower than Celesteela while being immune to Leech Seed and able to tank a Fire Blast/Air Slash from a defensive variant. Smack Down and U-turn out into Sub Tectonic Rage Duggy and it was GG. It was the most fun gimmick set I've used to date.

Almost everything worked against it. It lost Z-moves which paired amazingly with it in both reducing Knock Off, and getting it to break stuff at command with its 150 offenses, without the need of a choice specs. It lost 10 attack/defense on both special and physical this gen. King Shield got nerfed by half its amount. Poltergeist acces for other physical Ghosts and Nasty plot for Gengar, new Glastrier at the start of the gen, overall more competition. Pursuit being removed made things worse indirectly as Dark-types that often didn't run max offense as they could trap most Ghost/Psychic-types thanks to their frailty with Pursuit, and thus would be prone to Aegislas,h were replaced by simply fast offensive Dark-types. Who did not lose to Aegislash nearly as hard. But at least it got Close Combat!, jk, that move that nets a handful of important KO's more than Sacred Sword already did while still dropping your stats. Overall an upgrade sure, but not one that allowed it to do stuff it couldn't already.

people keep talking about movement speeds when it seems to me like the speed stat would often be prioritizing reaction/attack speed, with maximum movement speed being a secondary factor. and we're told that decidueye can apparently aim and fire arrows in a fraction of a second, so like... yeah, telling me "owls aren't that fast" doesn't satisfy me when the very next gen, we've got a freaking penguin that's blazing fast as long as it doesn't have ice on its head (Eiscue). and going back to the same gen that introduces decidueye, its slower than a jellyfish (Nihilego)
@halfway7690
@halfway7690 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah fair enough, pokemon speed is weird. How is a miscolored pokeball that needs anger management faster than every pokemon except 4 and tying with 3? Don't know : / I guess you could say it's for balance or gameplay or filling niches or whatever. For example, if there already was a grass type that filled Decidueye's niche if it was fast, so they made it slow to boost its other stats.But grass types have always been traditionally slow, I think at least. So I think Game Freak might just have a personal vendetta against Alolan pokemons. Since as someone else put it, they decided to break literally all their ankles except for like a few legendaries and mythicals. Along with a bee, a meteor with its shell smashed (I'm seeing a pattern I don't like here. Guess they're all Naruto.) A lizard with fan service, the Alolan Forms of 4 pokemon a rock doggo and flowers. If you don't count the legendaries and what nots or the Alolan forms. (Of course GF aren't gonna break their ankles.) That's 5 pokemon that breaks 100 speed. (Flowers is tied) so 4. It's so weird too, because pokemon like Zerora gets appropriate speed stats. 'As fast as lightning strikes' Honestly, I think there's a formula GF is following that they try to deviate from for fans expectations. Although this doesn't work a lot of the times. (Eiscue from slow ice types.)

Rowlet was the first starter since BULBASAUR to be dual-typed, and the fact that it changed it's secondary type upon evolution to Ghost, and all the different elements that went into its design (including extinct native Hawaiian owls!) make it the best Alola starter in my book (sorry Popplio, you're still adorable). Always bothered me how Decidueye has mediocre speed. If only its Special Defense and Speed were swapped, it would make it more threatening offensively considering its decent coverage. Also since Gen 7 is the only gen to not have a starter in a final form have at least 100 base speed

Alolan Pokémon in general tend to be slow, probably because they live in a tropical paradise so their lives are pretty much a permanent summer vacation, so they're chill and therefore slow. Ok, that's a bad explanation. Here's a good explanation for Decidueye's speed tho: archers need to stay still and focus to launch their arrows and there's also the issue of reloading, an archer can't just run around at high speeds firing arrows with perfect accuracy AND reloading them in the blink of an eye. XD

A lot of people have commented on it's speed. Owls are slow. The slowest flying bird, I believe. They evolved to fly quietly. Low speed makes sense.
@ggrarl
@ggrarl 2 жыл бұрын
The slowest flying birds are the American woodcock and the Eurasian woodcock at 5 mph. While it's true owls tend to wait on a perch and then dive on their prey, lots of the smaller species catch their prey in the air. The burrowing owl can even chase prey down on foot, and the extinct stilt-owls (the inspiration for Decidueye), having the same build, are likely to have hunted the same way. A great horned owl can fly up to 40 mph, but usually flies at half that speed. Same with a barn owl, going as fast as 20 mph, but as slow as 2 mph.

soo... what u think?
@officernealy
@officernealy 2 жыл бұрын
@@camoking3609 I forgot I made this comment until this reply, so thanks for reminding me, haha. I have two different trains of thoughts on Decidueye-Hisui, Design and Competitive Viability. If we're talking purely visually, I like it a lot. I think making it visually appear as a Ronin compared to the original's archer is a nice variant on a... well, regional variant. As someone who's also seen Kyoto's vibrant leaves first hand, I love the fact they gave it a vibrant autumn color palette reminiscent to maple leaves during "Momiji." Competitive wise... this is tough because currently we don't have adequate competitive for Legends Arceus nor do we know what changes these Pokémon are going to undergo into the transition to Scarlet & Violet as of this comment. That said, I can make some hypothesis. Grass/Fighting is a fairly common type and there are already big heavy hitters with that combo like Breloom, Verizion, Chestnaught, and the seemingly busted Lilligant-Hisui, making Decidueye-Hisui hard to stand out. What's worse is that type combo gets obliterated by Flying attacks and unlike the others that have adequate coverage options or stats/abilities that can even the odds, Decidueye doesn't currently have those so ending up in tiers like AG/Uber/OU/UU is most likely out of the question. Decidueye-Hisui has potentially two saving graces that could secure it a spot in the RU/NU meta however and those being its signature move, Triple Arrows, and its hidden ability, Long Reach. Triple Arrows decreases the targets defense by -1 while simultaneously increases its crit ratio by +2 for 3 turns which sounds great until you realize that your opponent can switch into something in the next turn, losing half of that attacks benefit, while also not really being able to guarantee a punish on whatever switches in. Long Reach might be interesting because all physical attacks are immune to contact based damage but for the most part its pretty situational. So a physical attack like Triple Arrows on something like a Ferrothorn sounds pretty nice but at that point, why wouldn't you send out a Fire special attacker and use Fire Blast/Flamethrower?
@camoking3609

@@officernealy I think hisuian decidueye's viability relies on what happens when he gets his updated movepool although it's really sad that he has to compete in the hisuian circuit against LIlligant if i had a nickle for every time decidueye was outclassed by another pokemon that shares it's exact same time in it's debut generation, i'd have two nickels, which isn't alot but it's rare that it happened twice although to be fair, It's reasonable to assume liligant is about to but every Grass/FIghting type in the game down a notch except maybe breloom bc brelooms is more of tactical Pokémon more then an outright attacker
@officernealy
@officernealy 2 жыл бұрын
@@camoking3609 Yeah, It's pretty hard to compete with a Breloom w/ Poison Heal, Spore, a giant pool of great STAB Fighting/Grass attacks, as well as a modest amount of coverage moves. My hope is that maybe when Decidueye-Hisui gets transferred over to Scarlet & Violet it will either get some of the moves its Alolan counterpart does like Spirit Shackle, U-Turn, Sucker Punch OR it gets better STAB moves like Close Combat, Grassy Glide, Drain Punch, etc.

I still wished Ash's Rowlet had evolved into Decidueye just like his Incineroar and Lana's Primarina because when I first watched Pokemon Sun and Moon Series I orginally thought that Ash's Rowlet will evolved during Pokemon Sun and Moon Series just Ash's past first Pokemon he caught during his journey to other region just like his Butterfree, Swellow, Staraptor, Unfezant and Greninja, plus when I saw the third Pokemon Sun and Moon Series poster featuring Dartrix I assume that Ash's Rowlet was going to evolved next. But unfortunely that never happened thanks to the Japanese writers of the Series because they have no intention to plan of having Ash's Rowlet to evolve in the first place for the purpose of Rowlet's cuteness popularity and for comedy. Which is why the made a episode "No stone unturned" to keep Rowlet from evolving with the Everstone which is so unfair, I mean I know Rowlet is cute but I still prefer Decidueye because it's both a Grass/ Ghost type, it can still fly and it can have some powerful moves like Leaf Blade, Leaf Storm, Spirit Shackle and Frenzy Plant. To be honest about two episode featuring Ash's Rowlet battling Hau's Decidueye in the Alola League Quarter final I still believe that Ash shouldn't have won his battle against Hau because Hau's Decidueye is well too powerful and it's a higher level while his Rowlet is a comedy and has a habit of sleeping in the battle. The only reason Ash won because the Japanese writer made that happen and wanted to prove that unevolved Pokemon can still defeat their evolved form which to me is disappointed, annoying and waste of two episodes.

I now praying that a Gen 9 or 10 fully evolved grass type starter Pokémon will join for smash bros 7. Imagine the next fully evolved grass type starter that is based on raven beak from Metroid Dread.

Wow. You're comparing Pokemon that looks like something from Metroid. As an Metroid fan, proper respect my man.

WE HAVEN’T EVEN FINISHED THE GEN 6 STARTERS. Please do the Gen 6 starters, and I think people would also appreciate doing national dex for them since they weren’t in Generation 8.

Another grass starter! How good was Chesnaught actually? Has a lot of weaknesses but deemed itself an ultimate edgequake answer

So a few days ago I started an Ultra Moon run for the first time ever. I decided to pick Rowlet. That birb was always there to help out the team and I really started to like it. Just as I finished the run, this video came out. Perfect timing.

I am definitely picking Rowlett in Legends Arceus because of its dual typing
