DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Came here to learn how to beat Palmer's Milotic from Platinum that literally never misses hypnosis.

Use your own milotic with zoom lens, ice beam and hydro pump. Use those moves to take down dragonite and rhyperior. If milotic is the first one you entered with then he will send out dragonite first then rhyperior. Once it becomes milotic vs milotic he is never gonna use ice beam. This is a good chance so switch in with a grass or electric pokemon that has high attack stat and hit milotic where it hurts the most. It's physical defense. I recommend a sceptile with leafblade to take down milotic since sceptile is way faster than milotic and with a stab leafblade it should be enough to take it down

@@Unknown-gf1ci for your first battle against him start out with your own milotic. He will use either rhyperior or dragonite. Take them out with hydro pump and ice beam. Use the move that is 4x effective against the two. His last pokemon is also gonna be milotic. You can either stick with your own milotic or switch in to a fast grass type like sceptile. You can safely switch in since palmer is never gonna use ice beam on your milotic. Your last pokemon just use whoever you want. And one more thing. Do not try to take down rhyperior using physical moves. That thing will just wall it. Hit it where it hurts the most, its very low special defense. For the gold battle start out with a fighting type that isnt lucario. He will start with cresselia. Switch in to a dark type. Preferably houndoom since cresselia has a bug type move which is strong against dark but houndoom being part fire type means it will only deal neutral damage. Take down cresselia. At this point if he sends regigigas who has equake, then just let your dark type die. Once its dead send in your fighting type and one shot regigigas. After regigigas is down you should have two pokemon one of which still at full hp. Stick with your fighting type and just damage heatran. If your fighting type dies send in your last pokemon and take down heatran. For your fighting type I recommend infernape since it hits hard, is fast and has access to close combat. For your last pokemon I suggest any fast pokemon than learns equake like garchomp. If he sends out heatran then just break the focus sash and let your dark type die

I dunno know. I have caught both a Munchlax and Feebas in Platinum, and while Munchlax is lot tougher to obtain, Feebas is way more tougher to evolve. Even my bestest Poffins weren't sufficient so I had to resort to the expensive Poffins of Veilstone City Department Store, since I didn't want to take the risk of sheen being filled. So yeah, I think both Milotic and Snorlax are equally tough to get in Gen 4.

@person person honestly, that set is no gimmick! It was very popular in VGC 2018 and early 2020! Milotic was the only Mon with Competitive that can viably use an Adrenaline Orb boost to actually out speed anything with the +1... That is.... Until Galarian Articuno showed up!

Galarian-Articuno was still reaping the benefits of it's "new toy syndrome," it was steady Top 20 in the usage stats from it's release to that point, and was performing fairly to very well on some team-builds... At the TIME of my comment, Galarian-Articuno was the more common and better performing Competitive Mon. Context is key. Would I NOW claim that Galarian-Articuno is and will continue to be the better Competitive Mon compared to Milotic? No... BUT... I will stick to my guns for my claim at the time I made it As for Adrenaline Orb Milotic, I said I was talking about VGC2018 Milotic sets. +Francisco Gaitan Barrientos The main problem with Tapu Fini is that it accidentally prevents itself from inflicting status, making Misty Terrain potentially great or potentially horrible for the player using it depending on their team composition and the enemy's team composition, hence Tapu Fini actually isn't that versatile (it's either Choiced offense or Whirlpool + Nature's Madness trapping). In contrast, Milotic is a status spreading bitch to deal with with Scald and Toxic trolling everything to the point of being infuriating, AND it is a stupidly strong anti-Intimidate check when scarfed to the point of prominence (due to Landorus being spammed by 99.999% of the playerbase) if a mega-Milotic does happen and its (most likely) half-Fairy, it's new ability will determine how it will function. Ironically, it might end up worse than regular, Competitive Milotic for Doubles for all we know.

Haha I still use it sometimes. Whirlpool, toxic/sub, hail, ice body, leftovers. As long as there is a heal bell user it can be pretty annoying for a lot of pokemon to deal with.

Also, even with Feebas, you have to make sure you give it only the best bueaty Poke blox because there is only so much you can give it. But luckily, once you have it, you can breed if you mess up or just save before hand.

XY was when I started breeding competitive pokemon because I wanted to beat some guy in my dorm, and it all started with a Feebas that I naturally would evolve into Milotic. Didnt win the battle, but I lasted the longests compared to everyone else in the dorm. Been breeding since that day.

sad there was no mention of adrenaline orb milotic as an anti-intimidate mon. adrenaline orb gives the speed boost of scarf without the choice limitation, and the combination of surf/scald and ice beam means it shuts down almost every intimidator in the game, like mence, landorus, incineroar, and arcanine. after adrenaline orb procs it can easily outspeed them, and with a +2 to special attack its base 100 is more than enough. doubling in milotic against landorus' intimidate can turn the tables on an opponent to suddenly put them on the defensive, and even a scarf landorus that outspeeds wouldn't dare defog away hazards, since that would just bring milotic's special attack up to a terrifying +4. the only common intimidator it can't easily blow away is scrafty, since its only fairy move is disarming voice with an abysmal 40 bp, but that being said, it's not a long shot to imagine it getting gleam or moonblast in gen9.
