As many can attest to, living through the days of Halo 1-3 was such a treat and one of the best times ever in gaming. XBL was coming to life and Halo launches were HUGE events around the country. For those too young, Halo 2 and 3 launches were so huge I do not think we will ever see events like that ever again for a video game.
@ponchoskunk420

Their launches were historic for gaming. Halo 2 outsold every entertainment property at the time and Halo 3 was cited for low ticket sales at movie theaters the weekend it came out. Those two games blew up video games into the main stream stratosphere.

My friends and I went to the mall hours beforehand to be the firsts in line for Halo 2. That game and the Xbox Live (even with the rough launch lol) capabilities would dominate all our gaming lives for the next couple years. Live was like the wild west back then, but man were they some unbelievable times.

Yeah part of what made Halo 2 multiplayer so cool is that online console gaming was still this brand new frontier that felt so unique. The fact that you were suddenly playing with people from around the world was just mind-blowing, especially as a kid.

I remember being blown away by enemy a.i. the first time i saw an elite run and hide behind a pillar and then start shooting. It made me feel like im actually fighting an enemy and not bullet sponges. And also little details like grunt runs when a plasma grenade is stuck while an elite will run towards you in a suicide attack. Halo literally revolutionized the fps genre in a lot of ways from checkpoints to barriers to shields, enemy a.i. attack patterns, vehicle fps gameplay, map hacks, Lan parties, 2 weapon switch etc.

I remember the first time I ever played Halo CE. My dad and I visited a friend of his, and his son, who was about my age, invited me to play Halo CE with him. It was amazing. We played co-op campaign, and I remember it being so weird that we were playing a shooter together and not fighting against each other. I knew there and then that Halo was special, and I was proved right over the years of playing it on the couch with my buddies.

This was my first Xbox game. I was WAYY too young to play it, I remember my dad watching me play it. It was the first mission in the campaign, the soldiers were running through the ship yelling “Get those bastards”(or something like that), I repeated that line spraying my AR, and my dad was furious I cursed at such a young age. Within 5 years, we were playing Halo 2 LAN tournaments with his work buddies, and their sons. Lots of snacks, and a bunch of us just having a good weekend. Man I miss that.

14:20 budget and time constraints, but also hardware constraints. It was very common at the time to have a game where the second half is just the first half in reverse, because that's double the maps for the same amount of disk space.

Agreed with your take on the aesthetics being a thousand times more engrossing in the original graphics. However, you forgot to mention in AOTCR and two betrayals, the MOMENT TO MOMENT gameplay, which is what halo is about, is FANTASTIC, and in my opinion helps to alleviate the repetitive areas. I was 11 in 2001, 14-15 in 2004, and 17-18 in 2007. I lived through its golden age at the perfect time for gaming. Very fortunate.

Well, in my opinion as an all time halo fan boy since it’s first release all those years ago Halo CE holds a special place in my heart and I still play it to this day. You forgot to mention that when they brought Halo to PC it opened up a whole new ball game when you were able to finally play online with other players. That shit was epic, and I still play it on my PC today. It never gets old, and I still find myself having a good time when I do play it. It’s truly a gem.

Two Betrayals is one of the best missions in the game. Backtracking and seeing everything you once knew, now flood infested was the true oh fuck moment's of the game. And seeing covenant fight the flood for the first time in two Betrayals was INCREDIBLE! people that think like you are typically those players that just run through a mission really fast without taking it all in.

The campaign did recycle maps, but the difference in enemies and gun play made the whole game a great trading ground. Playing the “library” and “two betrayals” on legendary taught you how to move, use grenades, shoot and reload. CE campaign was like a boot camp for the multiplayer. I never felt the same for the other games campaigns.

Seriously ?) You really "loved every second of it"?) Even the mission The Keys, even the Library?... Did you even enjoy Every second of the mission Two Betrayals ?) (Unlike the author, of course😏) I'm surprised... honestly surprised, that even now there can be people who, despite all the modern gaming industry, can still love Halo CE so much... as I loved it in my childhood, who (seems, thanks to my childhood inexperienced expectations) was able to love Halo CE as much as people in 2001, who had not previously seen a FPS on the console of the same level as this game !) Halo CE is a historical game of its genre! So historical that even now Halo is something else, something of its own, far from both Military shooters and Arena shooters... And for me, the Halo CE campaign... is still the best in the series, and it's not just because of "Nostalgia" !! (much becomes clear in the video from The Act Man, with which I largely agree😌) Honestly, I'm still sad deep inside that, after 21 years, the developers still haven't succeeded/didn't make an effort to make just the perfect version of halo CE (and I'm talking a lot about the gameplay now)... 😔 (and here you can already watch many videos from Ascend Hyperion about sandbox to make it more clear, again 😅)

09:48 exactly: Master Chief is more of a concept that a character; he has traits, but he is more of the ideal of the human warrior spirit, the imbodiment of it; in a sense, he reminds me of the character from a novella by Italo Calvino called "il cavalliere inesistente" (the non-existing knight), whose whole being is just a set of armour animated, pretty much, by the will to battle and win, and once he's done with his duties, he sort of vanishes, leaving the empty husk he once inhabited as a spirit to the character who became his squire. We are that squire, moving the armour in game, and Master Chief is the armour when the cutscenes resume and the plot advances: he sort of "exists" through us and merely due to the plot; hence why I think the ending of Halo 3 worked so well: he returned to the place where we fist met him, his call answered, his energies spent, his duties towards humanity completed.

I get the criticism, but personally I loved Two Betrayals. To me, it was the level that best demonstrated just how small you were in this fight, but simultaneously showed how much of an impact you were having. Those big open expanses where the Covenant were fighting the Flood who were fighting the Sentinels - yeah I get that it was just Assault on the Control Room in reverse with those pit stops in the Banshee added in, but the variety of encounters, weapons, enemies, landscapes was where Halo really came together for me. Great video! Earned a sub from me.

its insane 343 keeps getting chances with the IP, there's really no good reason we shouldn't have a decent halo to play in 2023. the prime days of halo were something where you really had to be there to understand what the community was like. nothings come close to recreating it since, and I don't think any game ever will at this point. but it's crazy to think they pulled that off all those years ago now and it was amazing to be apart of. truly a shame how far 343 has tarnished its legacy, there's for sure people now that would never believe halo ever had a "prime". can only hope the rumors are true that they'll only be "consulting" over future titles and a proper studio gets a chance to revive the once legendary system seller. luckily this next year is stacked and gears of war leaks are starting to come out

6:22 CE got online multilplayer in 2003 in the PC version, year prior to Halo 2. AOTCR is actually my favorite level in CE. 22:04 It's not all Flood after that point, you do encounter with Covenant Spec-ops unit in the elevator and there's some cool lore about that. And about multiplayer, CE absolutely has the best Halo multiplayer out there, by far. Magnum is the perfect jack of all trades weapon. It's never the best option in any situation, but it's always a good option in any situation. Health packs are actually super important, especially at higher levels because you don't wanna die to 1 nade when your health is yellow, you want it full. CE has awesome maps; Damnation (my all time favorite), Chill Out, Prisoner, Hang em high, and all the Big team maps pretty much. Actually the spawns in CE are awesome, not horrible. It may feel horrible when you spawn right front of your enemy, but that's not the game's fault, it's your teammates fault. In CE you can actually control the spawns if you know what to do. If you die, your teammate gets to a specific location and boom, you spawn elsewhere. I also think the kill feed does its job perfectly. I wouldn't want some stupid audio or hitmarks when I get a kill. But the things I most love about CE multiplayer is: No melee lunge, static weapon and power-up spawns and of course, weapon and power-up physics. There are so many nades in different maps to get you a sniper or Overshield and you really need to master them at higher level. It's a shame they got rid of those physics and static spawns. And added a melee lunge...

Influenced design choices: -Designated melee and grenade buttons -Aim assist and bullet magnetism in conjunction with wider hitboxes to compensate for the difference between joysticks and mouse aiming -Regenerating shields/health to allow for more action, fewer pickups, and faster pacing. 13:55 If you ever watch the making of doc on Halo CE, even the developers knew it was bad. They were so crunched for time that they had to quickly reuse and replace assets. To the point that it became so monotonous, they put AAROWS on the path so you kinda knew where you were going 🤣🤣🤣

I enjoy all of the Halo games Bungie made but Halo CE definitely holds the belt for me. As an OG Halo fan I prefer the classic CE graphics. Everyone should experience playing CE in classic graphics. I wish the remastered anniversary never happened.

Man, I can't agree about Assault on the Control Room and Two Betrayals. I love those levels.
@sundarchip
@sundarchip 2 жыл бұрын
I have a very different take on Two Betrayals. To me, it is the definitive Halo CE experience and possibly the best level in the entire franchise due to the fact that it is the only level which features almost all the enemies in the game (except Spec Ops Elites) as well as all the weapons in the game. You literally have 3 different factions of enemies trying to kill you and each other. No other level from the entire series comes as close to replicating this.

This game brings back so many memories.. I never had the original xbox but my uncle had the og xbox and I spent a lot of my time round there playing that and some other games.. it was then that I fell in love with Xbox and halo. And for all PlayStations good games over the years, absolutely nothing comes close to how halo originally made me feel all these years ago

I have played Halo 1 and 2. I must say the controls are top notch. Controlling vehicles tanks, jeeps etc. is best I have ever seen in a PC game.

I first played Halo PC (GearBox Software port) back around 2003-2005 ish, and that's what made me fall in love with Halo. Been a huge, diehard Halo fanatic since.

One thing you missed out at the start when talking about Multiplayer. You said CE didn't have Online Multiplayer and that wasn't added till Halo 2. That isn't exactly true. Halo CE's PC port in 2003 had Online Multiplayer. So it wasn't Halo 2 that was the first online Halo game.

What's been made incredibly clear to me playing Halo 1 multiplayer on MCC is that the smaller maps are really not balanced for 4v4 gameplay. Things just get way too cluttered, and you get trapped in those spawn killing loops. They're clearly designed for 4 people playing on the same console, where it doesn't get nearly as chaotic. The larger maps though, that's where the online modes really shine. 8v8 Halo 1 is incredibly fun.

I can't tell you how many hours my friends and I put into CE back in the day. We would sit around and play the campaign over and over again. A lot of the time doing it single player Legendary and just switching off on deaths. When we weren't doing that we were playing multiplayer, when we weren't doing that we were bringing over our Xboxes and doing system link. When cable internet came around CE didn't have Xbox Live capabilities, but we found out about Xbox Connect and would play online that way...even with the worst lag you've ever seen in your life. This game changed FPS and the capabilities of console gaming. It was more than a game, it was this massive sci-fi epic injected with humor and personality. We wanted to just hang around in this world and explore every nook and cranny of it. I still go back and play CE campaign around once a year, and play multiplayer through MCC. The replayability for this game is unlimited....and we got it all again with Halo 2, and Halo 3.

ABOUT THE LAST SCENE OF THE CAMPAIGN When Chief takes off his helmet, the camera goes up and then for, 10-15 seconds, the screen goes black. The face that you see in that moment, its yours, the reflection in the TV or Monitor... The point that i try to make is that probably Bungie intended this. To see that everyone of us was the Chief.
