Today I have made my first 49km long run on training session, by slow 5:55/km and it was really easy for me :) I had to end only becouse my watch had low battery level.... For shure, I am training running by 9 years now, but I was preparring myself to 3/5/10k races. And in times of preparing for these races I can't run more than 30k becouse of I was not allowed to do such a long races. Now I am running only for fun and it was quite interesting :) By all these years I was thinking, that running ultra is ultra hard, by this day i can see it also can be really easy and funny.

After the end of lockdown in my country I ran 105 km, mostly on my own. Well, "ran", I actually walked for a lot of it as the total elevation gain was around 4200 meters. I was... not in as good a shape as those guys by the end. My left anterior tibial tendon started to hurt after some 40k, and the pain became worse as kilometers went by, especially on downhills. During the last 15k I had to walk backwards on those downhills, so that the pain would remain bearable. So yeah, running 100 km, pretty damn hard.

@@borisoglebskaia Yeah it was for a virtual event. Not a very big one, but for a good cause (organized by a charity that helps handicapped people). The "endurance" categories were longest distance, highest elevation gain and highest combination of the two (distance + vert*10) over 24h. I won two of them (someone else did a 5000m vert trail run). Two things I want to add : 1) I was fairly sure that the injury was specific to this effort and would not last. That's exactly what happened, my tendon looked pretty terrible at the end (all red and swollen), but it recovered quickly, in like a week. 2) I became a much better ultra runner after I acquired a mindset of just not giving up as long as I'm physically able to keep going. Sure it may not sound super healthy sometimes, but it also allows me to achieve things that I'll remember for the rest of my life.

9:02 That is actually a great answer. I know someone who used to be a great dad, husband and athlete, but after he got into a biking accident he can't really move anything but his head anymore. I had never run a half marathon or marathon in my life and decided to enter a 72k ultra marathon as a 103kg rower with tree trunk legs and no running training. After 35k I had a stress fracture in my foot. Everything was in pain, hip, feet, knees even forearms 😂 Ultimately finished but was the most miserable thing I've ever done. Great job, to be honest, most ultras are in mountains, and require a lot of stepping over rocks, roots , and running on loose rocks , this adds another level of fatigue that average hard surface runner is not used too and the mental fatigue of always looking down to avoid those obstacles. Still impressive non the least. Great job.

Mark, seeing as you are now an ultra runner, would you be interested in training for The Spartathlon in a few years? This is a 250KM run which follows the route that Pheidippides took from Athens to Sparta after the Persian army arrived at the town of Marathon a long long time ago (I don't recall the date from memory - perhaps someone can advise because i cant be bothered checking) and needs to be completed in under 36 hours (with various cut off times along the route. I've personally had this as a dream run since 2017 and was hoping to apply before I am 50, so 4 years to go. Im just slowly building a base as I have only ran for 3 years and a bit.

5am and that bright out? Crazy! I always get shocked by how long the day is at northern latitudes being a person that lives in Hawaii

Zero complaints, just a recommendation that you relate your dialog a little more to us mere mortals who can't just go do a 100k on a whim but have to train for months just to make a cut off time and barely finish.

This is a nice short film about a pro and ex-pro athlete running 100km. I don't really feel like it gave me that much appreciation for how hard it was for them to run 100km. They took 3 weeks to "prepare" which I'm assuming was mostly logistical, since I doubt they were able to prepare much physically in that time. Maybe it gives me some idea that I can probably do more than I think, but really I dunno. Did anyone watch this, and then try to run 100km? How did that go?

Really good film. The only 100k I finished was on a highschool track.

That sounds brutal..200+ laps?! Whoa. Guess I can’t say much though, tomorrow I’m doing a 100k on a treadmill, well most of it. 15 on the beach and the rest on the treadmill.

Having run a few ultra trail races up to 184km i have to say this: It is difficult and you hurt a lot if you are not well prepared. If you are well prepared it is much easier and pleasant and you don't hurt that much.
