Carving hand grips onto my hiking sticks and an easy way to do it without power tools. Just a ordinary day at the Folklore hiking stick Workshop.
Facebook...Folklore hiking and country walking sticks.
Ebay...A small selection of our hiking sticks can be found on this platform.

Nice to watch how others do things and pick up some ideas. I've found file and sandpaper give me the best results so far, it is more work but more controlled and with practice I'm getting quicker. I've also found that when I'm preparing ends to fit ferules and heads that using a 'blocker' of waste wood to guide the file lets me make a nice clean edge. I've finished the dress stick for Dad's 90th and made another two with brass heads. The heads seem to come from India or China and the casting can be dog rough meaning there's a fair but of tidying up to do before they can be fitted. Having to do a lot of lateral thinking to work round things at the moment, your videos are very helpful.

Hi, It's the simple methods that are satisfying to apply. You're doing something I have not done with cast metal and working with those problems . My customer base is hiking orientated so for me it's a pleasure to hear from other crafters and the types of sticks they are working on. Wishing you all the best for your dad's stick. Thanks for watching.

Haven't got any customers as yet. I used to make (and break) working sticks , the walking sticks are a new thing, also started making Hiking sticks and Martial arts Bo, Jo and Hanbo staffs. Love bringing out the wood grain, they arrive looking muted and boring, then the first coat of oil goes on and they show their character. Having a go at doing a spiral twist on an off-cut before doing it for real. I've started keeping odd bits and pieces to practice on. Having to buy in hardwood dowls for now as I have no shanks at the moment so have been scouting out areas to harvest next autumn/winter. Even then it will be a couple of years before I start finishing them.

Ciao! Uguale.

Hi, I have managed with simple tools for a long time but due to carving woodspirits I think a dremel type of tool may save time.I will look into other manufacturers and makes as you have suggested to get the best deal. Hopefully you have better weather than us here in north Cornwall at the minute. Many thanks for watching.Andy.
