Living in China as Chinese, I didn't realize how hard it is to live here as a foreigner. I would definitely freak out if I had to try so hard to convey a message but no people would comprehend. You are doing a good job, and I would like to give you a big thumb-up. Hope you will continue loving our country.

Kudos to your efforts, lots of expat in China just didn’t bother to learn and I’m glad to see you ain’t one of them. For a Beijinger living in Texas like me, I’d be seen as nuts if in go and about and didn’t speak English here (not as a tourist), idk why some expats in China think it’s Chinese ppl’s job to understand them not the other way around. Keep up the great work Poppy!

Its part of legacy of white supremacy. There are still expats that live in Asia that never bother to learn Asian languages expecting all native Asians speak English to them. Yeah it is total insulting when I meet an expat in China that been there for years and not speak a lick of Chinese. Also, Chinese people need to stop praise white people that speak bad Chinese. There are many Asians in USA that speak perfect English and no one even blink.

Martin Ma I'll tell you why. I lived in Beijing for four years, both in the expat heavy CBD and in the nongmin west of the city, and Chinese people did not want to help me with my trial & error efforts at learning Mandarin. They were more interested in scamming foreigners. So I said screw it and learned just enough to speak to landlords, bank tellers, and taxi drivers. I went in there with an open mind and left really disappointed at how Beijingers respond to foreigners.

As a Chinese work in Shenzhen, There is a suggesion for you: If you are aim for quickly comminication, using a native dict app will be better, for example, "Youdao Dictionary" App (popular in China, free and valid on Google Play play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youdao.dict&hl=en and the official site is cidian.youdao.com/) , you can enter the complete Engligsh sentence or single word or phrase then translate it to Chinese, the translation result will be more localization and Chinese grammatical so that people can understand it easylier

Hey Poppy! I'm from Beijing and i love your videos. It's so interesting to see things from a foreigner's perspective. I'd just like to share apps that we use on a daily basis: DiDi is for calling taxis; Gaode (高德) is for navigation; 大众点评 (DaZhongDianPing) is equivalent of trip advisor; 百度外卖 (Baidu Waimai) or 饿了么 (eleme) or 美团外卖 (meituan waimai) are all platforms for ordering delivery food; the two major bike sharing services are Ofo and Mobike, I'm not sure if this applies to Shenzhen; and of course, wechat is the most popular social media/messaging app that also acts like a wallet. If there are more that I missed, y'all can add to this!

I love the way you said 'wo shi mei guo ren.' LOL! You better get a native instructor for a few hours to teach you Chinese pronounciation and the tones. Basically it doesn't take much time to learn (unlike say French) and it's vital to be understood. Of course you have a geat talent for languages and imho you are a communicational genius . On the other hand having lots of expat friends and an English speaking lover isn't so helpful for your Chinese.😜😜 Gambatte!

If you have VPN, and you want to buy something from the market, you can use google translate to translate it to Chinese, copy the Chinese word then use google search to find images of that product, and since you searched for the Chinese word the images will be of Chinese products which would be famous brands and the people in the market will be familiar with.

Hi guys thank you so much for all the feedback and suggestions! A lot of you are asking similar questions so I will clarify them here, what I use: 1. Hello Chinese (to learn Chinese) - you can also use Pleco, Memrise, Chinese Skill, and more! 2. Microsoft Translator (phone app) I use everyday for translating menus, ordering food, or any basic conversation with people using 1 or 2 words 3. Haiyu Translator (translator gadget) I just got this so I'm still figuring it out but I'm planning on using it to have more in depth conversations with people because it translates long sentences very well and instantly. I'm also using it to help check my Chinese pronunciation. I can only pin one comment at a time so each day I will pin a new comment to the top to give people more ideas for what to use when communicating! Hope this helps! :) All links are in description!

I always feel weird that foreigners in China think Chinese should speak English or provide English services to them, though most Chinese try to do so. I had seen an India in Beijing mocking the cashier who was trying to provide English service to him. Imagine what if a Chinese who can only speak Chinese asks for services in a bank or a restaurant in NY or LA. That's why in Beijing, my home town, I always refuse to speak English to foreigners, even a word.

As an English speaker, I've tried learning three different languages and failed (I can say my name in french but that's about it). Languages like french and spanish are different from english because of feminine and masculine words, and languages like chinese and arabic are even harder because of the amount of different symbols. All that being said, I still understand not to travel to a foreign country not knowing their language if I'll be communicating with anyone. It's common courtesy and it's crazy to me that people will put themselves in such a situation where they don't understand anything.

Love your story, sometimes if you wanna buy things like whipping cream which is not very common in a grocery store, it will be better if you can just order them online, such as taobao. You can just type whipping cream in English in taobao. Honestly, I know what whipping cream is, but I just don’t know how to say it in Chinese. And it’s impossible for Chinese people to understand that awkward machine translate. Haha

He tried to generalize all expats that living in China into one kind "being excited, happy at the beginning... then roller coasting down to the hell". Lol. I think Winston forgot one critical thing that NOT all expats are full-time, professional negativity seeker. Lol... So, I don't think the roller coasting thing will happen to every expats* . What do you say?

Hi Poppy, love your videos, especially since I also live in Shenzhen. Love see how similar our experiences are😊 I wanted to suggest the supermarket METRO they have almost everything you need for western or chinese cuisine. And at a reasonable price. I - although I don't speak Chinese- can use all the online shops like Taobao, JD, Yhd and there I can find really everything. Even stuff from my favorite German drug store. Keep up the good work 👍🏾

Hello Chinese isn't the good way to learn Chinese literally cuz it speaks just like robot. Chinese don't speak like that in real life. If you truly want to learn the standard Chinese(or Mandarin), I recommend the KZbin channel called 'Yoyo Chinese'( kzbin.info/www/bejne/np3dqGCjmNZ1orc ). BTW, I don't suggestion you to ask everyone on the street in Shenzhen about the pronunciation cuz they come from different places of China with their regional accent. Hope this can help you. Good luck!

2 years ago I was learning Mandarin through that channel + watching some Taiwanese reality shows(cuz some said it was easier to pick up the language than the actual Mandarin accent and tone) and guess what? I'm fluent in Chinese already. Understands 99.9% of Mainland Chinese shows.

American = mei guo ren. Guo sounds like Cho as in Chorus but with a "g" sound. Ren is pronounced as "rern" or maybe "r-urn" with the "r" sound. Any chinese pin yin that ends with "uo" sounds like "cho" as in chorus but with the sound of the first alphabet, eg guo is with g sound, if its "k" then the k sound - kuo is k-cho...sounds like "cho" but with a k sound with ends it with the "o" sound...kind of dragging it a bit to end with the "o" sound....ok i hope u get what i'm trying to say lol....kuo also sounds like kore-o

Spending more time with Chinese friends, less time with your boyfriend, is most effective way. Dumping the old one, and finding a new one (Chinese), is even better.

Hey Poppy, great video and the way you are trying to get around with the language is rally interesting! Why not try to make a friend who is a Chinese but also had lived in US for a while? I guess that would be the best way to understand China and communicate with other people.

Hi Poppy, great effort you’ve done! My suggestion would be make many local Chinese friends, and download WeChat so that you can communicate with the local friends, in case there’s something you don’t understand, you can ask them.

Love to see people travel and have a good time in China, as im NZ born Chinese, I have a perspective of both worlds, seeing others embrace the culture to such a level is amazing. China is great and traveling there with a good friend would be amazing if i had the chance. Its not often you see europeans embrace the cultures like this, would love to meet people like you one day.

You can find bacon in so many stores! Bacon is easy to find in big stores like carrefour and walmart. For half and half , I don't know about that but i do know there are a lot of places where you can buy very nice alfredo, mayonnaise or tamato imported sause for cooking pasta. I think its hard for you to explore everything by yourself). Ask Chinese people and you will get through it much more smoothly. We are willing to help! I am from Shenzhen and now I am studying in US, so if you are wondering about anything I am happy to help.
