@@allthatsokay yeah. Most ppl who are hearing but learn ASL/other sign language for someone they love are like this. Most sign languages emphasize the use of non verbal communication and facial expressions and also when Ellen signs and speaks at the same time she is literally speaking two different languages w different word order and grammar, and unique ways to communicate in each language and doing both is hard unless you are a professional simultaneous interpreter. It's a hard task between any two languages that are very different - e.g Chinese and English, Hungarian and Portuguese or Navajo and French. (these are actual examples of languages spoken by ppl I've seen simultaneously interpret.) there's a reason sign language interpreters in most countries need a formal education. Ellen is amazing!

@@Batya-Grace dancing is one of the oldest forms of communication and getting to know someone. People choose their spouse after a dance. I was trying to explain to people on the internet that they don't know KZbinrs well enough to ask them to speak. If it's a friend or a family member sure. But he isn't your friend or family member he is a person bringing awareness and sharing their life. He shouldn't be bombarded with what I feel are rude comments to speak for our morbid curiosity. @@saywhatsam9655 as a hearing person who uses ASL (not super fluent), it's a natural part of the language. facial expressions and mouth shapes change the meanings of certain signs, and mouthing helps make your meaning more clear. the noise is basically just a byproduct of that. if you sign with deaf people daily, it's more than likely that you'll just start doing it naturally. It doesn't seem forced from my experience with hearing people fluent in ASL

I personally prefer when Ellen voices the conversation. For me, its due to a combination of learning styles that prioritize how I am able to take in information. Text almost always wins my focus, esp when there is no voice, so I never see the signs because I'm drawn to the CC --which does nothing to help me understand asl. When Ellen uses her voice I can connect the words with the signs that I'm seeing because there's something about vocalizing that pulls me out of that "Text will tell me everything I need" sort of mentality and I can actually see them again. Now, this is just me as a hearing person saying what works for me in terms of wanting to learn the language. That does not mean that anyone needs to accomodate my preferances--You guys aren't instructors, you don't need to change for anyone. I'm here to see what you've got, not demand that you give me what I want. Do what works best for you :)

To me, it doesn’t matter whether you talk or not Ellen because I find I read the subtitles either way :) Just, please don’t stop subtitling Java. In fact, I’d love to know more of what she’s thinking 🤔😄 Seriously though, you two (three) are a joy to watch and I’m truly grateful for your videos.

It makes sense to choose to not use her voice... Both of my parents are deaf, and not me. So I know Sign Language and spoken French (I'm from Quebec, Canada). So to completely follow the conversation, it's easier to use the same method of communicating, instead of having to switch what to pay attention for. I really like this experiment! 🤘

I have learned a lot about the deaf community since I have been watching your videos. I now appreciate that probably, voicing words is linked to their sound. I didn't know or appreciate that link before I watched these videos. So much we take for granted in life hey. Its easier to repeat a sound when you can hear it, than make it up from seeing someone's lips say it. Respect Ryan. I appreciate the mental effort it takes you to remember things you watched but never heard. All the best to you. Also, after seeing some of your old videos, I have heard you say a few words here and there like "Nooo" etc.

In reference to “no voice Ellen”…when I watch your videos I tend to try to figure out the signs while she talks. I know very few signs, so it’s kind of like trying to learn without going to class. With this video, I’m focused more on reading the subtitles than looking at the sign language.

I don't usually support "couple's channels," but this is my 2nd vlog of yours and I'm HOOKED 😍 I'm studying ASL for fun (and bc I'm a huge language nerd) so it's really helpful to see people have regular conversations. Signing is SUCH a beautiful language! Also, your content is adorable and informative. As for Ellen vocalizing or not, the percussive sounds her mouth makes will take some getting used to, but I don't mind. Do whatever feels right 🥰

I like when Ellen speaks because I know a little bit of ASL, and I enjoy watching her hands while hearing her voice to confirm I understood the signing. When you use your voice it’s like watching a movie that is spoken in your language. When you only sign but don’t use my language of choice I only read and miss both of your facial expressions. I think it’s about the effort it takes to communicate with each other in their language of choice or need. My blind friends have to turn on their audible reader to hear because they can’t see you signing. I appreciate when you use your voice because I can taken in more of the experience with multiple forms of communication. My friends who are unsighted ask me questions and I have to say I’ll have to go back because I missed it. The gift of communication is that we can reach people in many ways and it bridges our gaps of understanding so we can have our lives enriched by the experience of others lives. Thank you both for sharing your experience in audio / visual, it is wonderful!

No voice Ellen is easier for me to process. I am newly diagnosed with hearing loss, so I do my best to pick up as many signs as I can from the videos. Being a new ASL student, not having to use my failing ears at all to process the information in the videos is so much better. I was able to follow along with the signing and read the closed captions faster and with increased accuracy of matching the sign to the word.

I enjoy when Ellen talks while signs. This is how I learned a lot of new signs. I’m not fluent in sign language so I have to depend on the captions to understand on a video like this. I used to like learning when Ellen signed and talked at the same time and then I would test myself when Ryan would sign because I had to depend on the signs and try to understand. But right now for context, I’m solely depending on captions now. But I love you guys and do what makes you both comfortable!

In terms of learning sign language it is definitely more helpful for Ellen to talk like you said. You can focus on the signs more without having to read the captions. But it's clear how it affects her facial expressions, her signing seems more fluent when she's not focused on talking as well. Either way though their channel is really helping with learning and understanding sign. Hopefully it's helping you as well.
