A lot of the time we can find ourselves on this hamster wheel of trying to optimise every waking hour of our days, hyper-focused on time and paranoid about how the decisions we make today will influence our future selves. But ultimately the hamster wheel just keeps on spinning when we don’t take a moment to slow down, reflect and enjoy the moment.
Nasir Kharma is a medical student King’s College London, best known for his KZbin Channel, Kharma Medic, where he talks about studying, productivity and what it’s like being a med student. In the conversation we chat about how he started his channel and began to play the KZbin game, how his time in therapy has shifted his thinking around time management and how we’ve been thinking about what it means to live a meaningful life recently.

Guys this was an awesome conversation. As someone trying to build a KZbin channel too (though of a very different sort) and a full-time student (Physics) there was so many points here that resonated with me. Everything from how not to take the fun out of the KZbin thing, to not obsessing over to-do lists when you feel you’re juggling so many things; it’s so cool to hear my own thoughts echoed by similar people (makes me think I’m doing the right thing) and also to get so many new ideas! The therapy thing in particular! Thank you both 🙏🏼

I love this Nasim Kharma doing his KZbin for helping others to get into Med School. I was an Algebra-1 teacher in West Los Angeles's S.M. White Middle School. I was an Emergency Math teacher with over 20 college credits(actually 24). No one told me I could Retest any quiz or Unit Test as all CA teachers can do but don't get paid for 6-8 hours after school to re-grade 175 students. My 1st and 2nd semesters were disastrous. My 3rd to 8th semesters children improved every semester. My other 3 Algebra teachers told me no 8th grade child could or would earn an A or B. I proved them wrong. I had 9 kids with As by Christmas. By June I had students with 19 As, 34 Bs, and ONLY 5 Fs. Now I'll teach Algebra-1 online for 420,000 new 8th Graders every year in CA. Many Thanks for discussing your "hobby". ))

Hi! First year med student here. Just wanted to come in and say that the concept of perfectionism really resonates with me. I’m a nontraditional (older and single parent) student. When I got into school, I said the same thing “I want to help others get here too.” As I’ve started creating videos, each one gets a little better, with a little less work as I try to embrace publishing the content over trying to master editing. Medicine is a special place to be. Thank you for sharing with us 🥰

Interesting conversation although I don’t quite follow Ali’s notion about not following the Protestant work ethic and working hard. It’s easy for him to say this now that he has a team of staff working for him and doing everything for him and yes it must be easier to put in less hours. But Ali was only able to have these things because of the number of hours he put in at the start. I remember hearing a vlog with Sheen where she said Ali had been sat at his desk from the morning until 11 pm at night and hadn’t even moved from his desk. I think you ought to be more transparent about this aspect of ‘hard work’ otherwise people will believe that they don’t need to work hard to make it which is not realistic and not the case at all. I think a lot of it has to do with working hard doing the right things.
